President’s Message
Welcome to the 2017 Kenora District Festival of the Arts
All of the pieces are in place for the Festival. The list of talented participants from the city of
Kenora, Dryden, and the surrounding area is very impressive. We should consider ourselves
fortunate that we have such a great wealth of people, of all ages, who are prepared to present
their talents for our enjoyment. The benefits of the Festival are numerous. It gives an
opportunity for the artist to showcase their talent before an appreciative audience. This is a
very important part of the learning process. The performers will now have the opportunity to
hear other musicians, actors, dancers, and see visual artists, all of whom will receive a written
adjudication for their effort. The goal of the Festival is to encourage all of the participants to do
their best, and enjoy the enthusiasm of those around them. It is a known fact that participation
in this type of activity has had very positive effects in the life skills of the individuals.
The Dance class has been a very strong and welcome addition to the Festival. Due to the
dedication and enthusiasm of Erin McCuaig, and her dance school.
The band and instrumental classes flourish. It is great to hear and see this variety of talent
blossom.
The visual art has found it's place in the Festival with outstanding entrees in a large number of
categories, with a broad cross section of ages.
As a community we continue the long term and positive benefits of the Festival. This March
29th Julie Husband a graduate of Beaver Brae High School and a former participant in the
Festival, will perform with the Thunder Bay Symphony here in Kenora. Julie is now a
professional musician performing, teaching and living in Winnipeg.
I feel that it is very important for us as a community to keep this valuable asset alive and well.
The arts play a very important part in the fabric of our community, and deserve the support
and encouragement of all of us.
Thank you to all of the many dedicated volunteers who contribute countless hours of work
and support to the Festival. The Festival committee would like to offer special thanks to our
loyal financial contributors for their continued and valued support.
The Hi-Lites Concert this year is 7:00 pm Saturday, April 29th at Knox United Church.
See you at the Festival,
Len Mark

DANCE ADJUDICATOR: Debra Thiessen
BIOGRAPHY
Ms. Thiessen knew that teaching dance was her calling and a year after finishing high school, she was accepted into the RWB’s Teacher’s Course Program. She graduated after 3 years of training with having completed several exams which included her Associate designation from the Imperial Society of the Teachers of Dance – Cecchetti Branch, as well as passing her jazz exams in the Brian Foley ADAPT Syllabus. She then moved to Indiana to take over the Ballet and Jazz programs as well as teaching Tap and Beginner Tumbling at Newburgh Academy of Dance and Performing Arts School. After 2 years in Indiana, Debra moved back to Winnipeg, and began teaching again for the RWB’s Recreational Program. Her experience in Indiana with choreographing for festivals and competitions helped her to do the same for the Jazz Workshop and Ballet Workshop classes at the RWB. Her dedication showed in her students as they continue to receive passing marks in their Ballet, Jazz, and Tap exams and receiving awards and scholarships at festivals and competitions. But Ms. Thiessen didn’t stop with her students, she also continued her training and was awarded her Licentiate with the Cecchetti Society of Canada in 2003. She is a versatile and accomplished teacher, whose experience in many dance disciplines and levels has enabled her to work in Canada, United States, and England. For the past 3 years, Ms. Debra has been living in England with her family where she spent most of her time travelling throughout Europe, volunteering at her children’s school, and enjoying being a stay-at-home mom. She, however, could not forget her dance roots and worked with the school’s Head Master and teachers and helped implement a “Shake Awake” dance program that stimulates the brain in preparation to learn. She also choreographed for the school’s various plays, fundraisers, and other performing events. Before moving to England, Ms. Thiessen and her family lived in Illinois for 5 years. While there she took a much needed break from working to help her family transition as well as give birth to her second child. She later went to teach full time with the Peoria Ballet where she taught ballet, pointe, jazz, and tap as well as workshop classes in lyrical, modern, and hip hop. Ms. Debra enjoyed working alongside the company’s Artistic Director and School Director in auditions and rehearsals for with their version of The Nutcracker and choreographed for year-end shows. Debra’s contagious energy and enthusiasm is evident as her students continue to learn and strive for more. She only hopes to open the door to a vast world of dance to all those who want to learn.

BAND AND INSTRUMENTAL ADJUDICATOR: Ian Hodges
Biography
Dr. Ian Hodges is one of Canada’s most versatile musicians, performing professionally on classical and jazz guitar and in commercial music settings. Ian holds multiple degrees in guitar performance, including a Doctor of Musical Arts (University of Minnesota), Master's (Florida State University), Bachelor of Music (University of Manitoba), and is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, America's National Honorary Musical Society. Performances as a classical guitar soloist, chamber musician, and guest soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and other top professional ensembles led the Winnipeg Free Press to hail Ian as “Manitoba’s Premiere Classical Guitarist” (November 2001). CBC Radio featured many of his live performances in national broadcasts, and the CD “Canciones” (with soprano Charlene Pauls) received airplay across North America.

Dr. Hodges composes music for the concert stage, film and theatre, including National Film Board documentaries (the Peabody award-winning “Fat Chance” in 1994; “and so to Bed” in 1999), independent films (“Haunts of the Black Masseur - the Swimmer as Hero” in 2004), and shows for Prairie Theatre Exchange (“Butcher” 2015, “The Valley” 2014, “December Man” 2011). A highly successful teacher for over 30 years, Dr. Hodges has taught at the University of Minnesota, the Canadian Mennonite University, the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts, and for the Preparatory Division of the Faculty of Music, University of Manitoba. His students have won a great number of scholarships, medals and trophies in local competitions and exams, and have been accepted at music schools across Canada and the US. Many have gone on to professional careers in music.
