Purpose

• The2017NELSSummitwillbuilduponprioritiesestablishedinpreviousyears,suchassupportingtheHealthServicesExecutive(HSE)initiativefromNAB,improvingthepublicperceptionoftheNHAprofession,reducingbarriersforentryandincreasingretentionofexcellentadministratorsinthelong-termcareandhealthservicesfield,andensuringcontinuedparticipationbyNELSmembersinworkdonebytheprofessionalandtradeorganizationpartners.

• Thecentralthemeforthe2017NELSSummitis“EnhancingandExpandingHealthServicesandSeniorLivingExecutiveLeadershipProgramsatUniversitiesAcrosstheCountry.”

Focus for 2017 NELS Summit

Methods• Twenty-threeNELSparticipantswerechosenthroughanapplication

processandweretheninvitedtoattendathree-daysummitheldatTheGeorgeWashingtonUniversityandtheUnitedStatesSenate.

• ParticipantsgainedanunderstandingofpastNELSworkandidentifiedcurrenttopicsthatimpacttheNHAprofession.Participantscollaboratedtosetgoals,createactionplans,anddeveloptimelinestoimplementtheinitiativesagreeduponduringtheSummit.

• Strategize:NELSparticipantscollaboratewithotheremergingleadersinthepost-acuteandlong-termcareandservicesfieldtodevelopstrategiesonhowtoincrease,improve,andsupportthevalueoftheprofessionwhileassistinghealthcareexecutivesinattractingandretainingtalentedleaders.

• Advocate:AttendeeslearnaboutregulatoryandlegislativeissuesfacingtheNHAprofessionandcraftideasattheSummittosupportinnovativechange.Thetheme“AdvancingOurProfession,EnhancingLives”emergedin2016asawaytosupportandengageemergingleaderstostrategize,advocate,connect,andinnovatethefutureofthehealthcareandagingservicesadministrationprofession.

• Connect:ParticipantsunitewithfellowGenerationXandYleadersandnetworkwiththekeyleadersofNAB,ACHCA,AHCA,LeadingAge,andtheU.S.SenateSpecialCommitteeonAging.

• Innovate:Attendeesgainknowledgeonhowtoeffectivelyleadanorganizationandbeleadersinthisprofessionthroughsharedlearningexperiencesandcurrentbestpractices.

• By2050,thenumberofAmericansaged65andolderisprojectedtonearlydoubleto83.7million. 1 About40%ofnursinghomeadministrators(NHA)are55andolder,and32%ofNHAsareexpectedtoretireinthenext10years. 2 ThepastyearsoftheNationalEmergingLeadershipSummit(NELS)forHealthcareAdministratorsinHealthandAgingServicesparticipantshavedefinedchallengesforthisprofession,includingrecruitmentandperceptionissues,duetolowpayandnegativepublicperceptions.

• NELSisanannualgatheringofemergingleadersinthefieldofhealthandagingservicesadministrationtoengageindiscussionsofcurrentbestpractices,meetwithrepresentativesofkeyprofessionalorganizations,gainaninsideperspectiveonthelegislativeprocess,andexploresolutionsforattractingandretainingnewandevolvingleaders.

• ThefirstNELScohortin2010builtthefoundationforallfutureNELSparticipantsbyidentifyingfourthematicareaswhichhaveevolvedthroughouttheseven-yearlifeofNELS.
