DAY 1-Phonics Skills
Content Objective:SWBAT understand words with r- controlled vowels
Materials: spelling word list
Procedure: SW review high frequency words from the word wall.
SW practice spelling patterns by using explicit phonics to sound out words.

Content Objective:SWBAT read and understand text features
Materials:
Vocabulary words Reading A to Z story: The Force of Water
Procedure:
Introduction: SW practice the vocabulary words by reading small passages using the words and by acting them out.
TW build background knowledge by asking the students what they already know about water. Ask if
they have ever heard of the term water cycle.
TW create a KWL chart on the board and give students a KWL chart. They will work together to fill in
the first column (k) with things that they know about water. After that is complete have the students write
in what they would like to learn about the water cycle.
TW give students a copy of the book and have them preview the front, back covers and read the title.
Also have students look at the table of contents and subtitles.
TW introduce the term (text features) and explain what it means and how the students will use their bookto learn this skill.
Guided:
SW follow the teachers directions to find out information about text features.
TW read the story while students whisper read along with the teacher
Independent: SW fill in the last column of their KWL chart with what they have learned.
