Quarter moons are when we can see half of the lighted part of the moon. To us it looks like half of the moon is lit.

Full Moon: The entire lighted side of the moon can be seen

New Moon: Earth can only see the dark side of the moon

1. What affect does the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun have on Earth?

Gravitational Pull: The pull on the earth due to the sun, moon, and earth rotation on its axis which causes tides

2. What causes tides to occur on Earth?

The moon and the sun both have a gravitational pull on the earth, which pulls on the waters of the earth creating tides

3. What is a high tide? Low tide?

High Tide: Where the water levels rises twice a day

Low Tide: Where the water level falls twice a day

Both are caused by the gravitational pull from the moon and earth’s rotation

4. What is a neap tide? Spring tide?

Spring Tide: When the sun and the moon are both in line with the earth, they pull in the same direction, causing the greatest difference between high and low tides.

Neap Tide: When the moon and the sun are at a 90 degree angle, they pull in different directions, causing the least amount of difference in high and low tides
