Strengths Continental Philosophy. History of Philosophy.
Other Info The Department of Philosophy at Duquesne University was one of the first graduate programs in the United States to specialize in phenomenology and, more broadly, nineteenth and twentieth century continental philosophy. Our program remains committed to this tradition and focuses on post-Kantian European philosophy. We also integrate a broader emphasis on research in the history of philosophy, both as the necessary background for work in later continental thought and as a program focus in its own right. Please note that our terminal-MA program operates in tandem with our PhD program. While fellowship or grant stipends are not available to our MA students, we do provide partial tuition remission (usually ranging from one-third to half the cost of tuition). Also, we offer a wide range of support for language study: all ancient Greek, Latin, French, and German courses at the University are tuition-free for all philosophy graduate students, and we provide summer grants for our MA students to pursue in-country intensive language study abroad between their first and second years in the program. By fall 2014 we should have 14 tenured or tenure track faculty in the department (we are now hiring for fall 2013 and are likely to add an additional line the following year). Finally, please see our program website for additional information regarding our successful record placing our MA students with funded positions in PhD programs.

Strengths The "focus" of San Jose State's Department of Philosophy is on diversity. Thus, traditional areas of philosophy are well covered, along with many other areas. The latter include: Feminist Philosophy; African and African-American Philosophy; Buddhist Philosophy; Japanese Philosophy; Chinese Philosophy; Latin American Philosophy; Indian Philosophy; Gender Studies; and (in keeping with out setting in Silicon Valley), various perspectives on science and technology. Both traditional and other areas are reflected in the department curriculum and in faculty areas of interest (www.sjsu.edu/philosophy/contact/). In terms of professional activity (research, publication, consulting, etc.), outside reviewers have found the department to be notable nationally, to be among the top within the campuses of the California State University system, and to compare favorably with public and private PhD granting universities in the region.
Other Info The department includes a Center for Comparative Philosophy (www.sjsu.edu/centercomphil/). In terms of professional activity (research, publication, consulting, etc.), outside reviewers have found the department to be notable nationally, to be among the top within the campuses of the California State University system, and to compare favorably with public and private PhD granting universities in the region. MA recipients do well in moving on to Ph.D. programs, finding positions at community colleges, or pursuing other graduate education

Other Info The MA program is intended for students who would like to do more work in philosophy before enrolling in a PhD program or before going on to a career in some other field. Students whose goal is to complete a PhD in philosophy at Davis should apply directly to the PhD program. The Department offers a supportive and intellectually lively environment for students. There is a weekly workshop for graduate students. Students and faculty working in philosophy of biology meet in a weekly "lab." There is also a discussion group called "DaGERS" for students and faculty working in moral philosophy. In addition, given the college town atmosphere, there are many opportunities for informal interaction between students and faculty.

Other Info We offer a terminal MA for students who wish to improve their competitiveness for PhD programs, or to pursue graduate studies for personal interest. MA students take courses alongside PhD students and benefit from an atmosphere that is both intellectually rigorous and personally supportive. The course requirements for the MA are flexible, and students can choose either to take a qualifying exam or to write a master’s thesis. It is possible to complete the program part-time and to begin studies during the spring semester. Our department is ranked by the Philosophical Gourmet Report in the philosophy of religion (top 16), Chinese philosophy (top 9) and philosophy of art (top 28). This year, we are hiring two new tenure-track faculty members who specialize in metaphysics and in modern philosophy. Please see our web site for information about our lecture series, conferences, workshops and reading groups. Norman, OK, has great quality of life and is the second least expensive city in the US according to the Cost of Living Index published by the Council for Community and Economic Research in November, 2012. We especially welcome applications from women, members of racial and ethnic minorities, and members of other groups historically underrepresented in philosophy.
