HEALTH CAREERS PROGRAM Health Career Academy Program
On Thursday 13th June, students from Years 9-12 who have an interest in pursuing a health related
career, were extremely fortunate to be involved in the first Health Career Academy Program for
Orange. The University of Sydney, School of Rural Health, which has a campus at Bloomfield and
in Dubbo, hosted the event which gave students an insight into the varied health careers and
the numerous options within the health sector.
The day started at Dudley Private Hospital where students were treated to a behind the scenes
tour of the hospital and presentations from the CEO, a Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist
and nursing staff. There was ample opportunity to ask many questions about each of the roles,
their interrelationship and the health system in general.
The next stop was Orange Aboriginal Medical Service where students were offered a full access
tour of the facilities and discussed associated job opportunities with dental staff .
Moving to the School of Rural Health Bloomfield Campus for lunch and the afternoon, students
mixed with university students and staff, working through four practical workshops. They had the
opportunity to practice CPR with a mechanical dummy which indicated their chance of saving
the life of their casualty based on their technique including their compression placement, depth
and speed. Testing each other’s blood glucose levels and blood pressure was a highlight with
one of the most disturbing and eye opening sessions of the day being the handwashing
workshop where we realised just how hard it is to clean your hands properly and how easily
germs are spread.
Some students finished the day with reassurance of the importance of their chosen health
pursuits and others were inspired to consider careers that were not even on the radar prior to this
experience.
An enormous thank you to Kathryn Naden from School of Rural Health for coordinating the
academy, and to the health professionals for their the generosity and professionalism, sharing
their experiences and facilities with our students.
Miss Morrissey and Miss Penberthy were extremely impressed with the enthusiasm and conduct
of all students on the day. All were wonderful advocates for our school who we would be
privileged to see in the future in allied health services.

EDUCATION PERFECT
Fantastic effort Felicity!
Congratulations to Year 11 Big Picture student, Felicity Van Doorn who received first place in the
Waste 2 Art Community Functional category for her loom knitted, baling twine, pink scarf. All
term Felicity has been leaving the Big Picture advisory every Wednesday to go out and work with
the kind, caring and clever women of the Orange Women’s Shed. Such an opportunity has
helped Felicity work on her service learning as well as increase her communication skills and self
confidence. Together with the women, Felicity helped revamp a coffee table and three chairs
with colourful baling twine as well as creating her funky pink scarf for “Mah – tool – dah” to wear
as she stands guard and watches over the vegie patch and welcomes the women to the shed
every week.
NEWS FROM BIG PICTURE
Earlier this year, a total of 24 students auditioned for the combined dance
ensemble and Aboriginal dance ensemble as part of the 2019 Schools
Spectacular. They were filmed with 12 students in each group and the
videos were sent off at the end of Term 1.
Miss Lee is very excited to announce that
both groups were successful with 12
students in the combined dance being
accepted and 8 from the Aboriginal
ensemble!
Both groups will be travelling down to
Sydney for a week in November. They will
be rehearsing with students from across
the state and perform three shows at
Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney Olympic
Park.
A massive congratulations to all of
the students who auditioned. We
will now be fundraising and
eventually begin learning some of
the choreography as part of the
show!

The NSW Premier's Sporting Challenge is a 10 week physical activity challenge for students
and staff. NSW Public Schools are invited to participate in a 10 week physical activity
challenge period which aims to have more students, more active, more often. This term,
students will participate in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge. The 10 week challenge requires
students to participate in and record their physical activity for each day. Physical activity isn't
just about being fit, it's about building resilience, improving concentration, and
supporting overall health and wellbeing. During this time students will be encouraged to
support each other to complete fitness events which will help to build a sense of unity and
community.
As part of the challenge, the PDHPE Faculty will be running the Premier’s Sporting
Challenge Years 7-10 GET ACTIVE DAY here at Canobolas on Friday 28th June.
All students in Years 7-10 will be involved. Year 12 students will be excluded due to HSC Trial
Examinations and Year 11 students will also be excluded due to the Life Ready Coursework.
Thirty students who have been actively part of our Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) Sport
Leadership Program will be running the activities throughout the day alongside PDHPE staff. The
GET ACTIVE DAY will primarily be focused on safe, fun and positive participation in physical
activity as well as a boost in school spirit and both staff and student morale.
Students will be encouraged to wear their house colours and staff to wear active attire on the
day. Students will participate in modified activities involving cricket, softball, hockey, touch
football, hockey, netball and basketball.
Looking forward to a great day!

GIRLS ACADEMY NEWS
IGA Homeless Lunch
On Tuesday 18 June Girls Academy students Bindi
Hines, Karlee Bell, Kira-Lea Welsh and Lateisha
Williams assisted once again with preparing and
serving hot and cold drinks for IGA’s weekly lunch
feeding the less fortunate, held in the Country
Women’s Association building.
Beef stroganoff served on a bed of rice warmed
the souls. While the usual tea, coffee and hot
chocolates were on the menu, milkshakes were
surprisingly the treat of the day for most clients
even on a chilly 9o C day.
The student’s presence was obviously missed
since their first visit back in Week 4 of this term
with many asking when the girls would be back. One gentlemen brought along his own keep
cup to head home with a piping hot Cappuccino.
Asking the girls what they enjoyed about the day one student stated “I liked today because we
got to interact with different people and we also got to try new things and help make
milkshakes”.
Always a pleasure to get involved with community events and to see such big smiles from both
our students and patrons. We look forward to next term with three more visits planned.
Painting with Hayden
This week saw the girls progress to working on a draft painting on MDF with the assistance of
Hayden. Shayna Ramage and Chey O’Neill put to practice what they have learnt so far this
term.
This session was great practice for the girls to utilize the techniques for handling the paint brushes
and the pressure needed for fading paint colors into one another.
Next lesson will see the girls starting on their own masterpieces.

Last week six Canobolas students, were involved in a Chess tutoring afternoon with Orange East
Primary School. The afternoon was organised between the two schools to help prepare the
primary school students for the upcoming primary interschool championship, a competition
Orange East has won the intermediate section of in the past.
The current intermediate team, as well as some of the up and coming junior team members
really enjoyed the afternoon of higher level chess, with local chess instructor Mr Joe Cummins
believing the level of chess played by the students was enhanced by games against the more
experienced players.
The Canobolas chess players wish the Orange East teams the best of luck as they compete
against teams from other primary schools in the area next term, and we look forward to a
possible rematch in the future.

NEW BOOKS IN THE STEM CENTRE
The Tattooist of Auschwitz is based on the
personal recollections and experiences of
Lale Sokolov. Lale told his story to the
book’s author over the course of three
years. He became the “tattooist” of
Auschwitz and Birkenau, which gave him
freedom of movement, more rations and
better conditions. He was able to barter
possessions of those who died in the gas
chambers for food and medicine. Lale was a
generous man and was able to provide for
many. This story is a moving testament to
the power of resilience and, most of all, to
the power of love.
