IntroductionProduct requirements document aims to explain functions and specifications of our product.
Before we worked on this documentation, we had made a market survey about similar products
and systems which will be used in our project. First of all, we determined functions of productand expectations of customer. After defining functions, we began to work on design of
MacQuick which is also mentioned as “Macaroni Vending Machine” in our previous reports.
Design specifications are written under both “interface of the product” and “technical
specifications” parts. Interface of product mainly includes buttons, display, paying system and
external view. On the other hand, technical specifications of vending machine consist of
electrical and physical properties of product, such as height and weight of system. We try to
make a prediction for cost of our vending machine and explain standards of product. Finally, we
mentioned about the quality function deployment to integrate user demands into quality design
process in order to obtain customer focused products.
Functions of the ProductOur product, MacQuick, basically is an auto-mat which offers a bowl of cold-served macaroni
with personally chosen ingredients in it. Since it is planned to achieve to deliver the food within
20 seconds, it is a quick way to have your breakfast, lunch or even dinner. Since MacQuick will
serve in various places to every people, it has to be easy-to-use and it cannot create a disturbance
to environment as smell or noise. It is also significant that our vending machine works for 24
hours without any intervention. To achieve these purposes, the solutions and precautions that the
engineers of the company proposed are listed as follows.
Serving Capacity
MacQuick will have a capacity to serve up to 80 bowls of macaroni which is the number
calculated as the maximum cooked macaroni we can store in MacQuick. It is also considered that
how many macaroni may MacQuick may sell in a day and determined the sizes of our product
accordingly which are given under “Technical Specifications” topic.

Prevention Disturbance to Environment
MacQuick may cause some disturbances to environment such as noise, smell and visual
discomfort if the necessary precautions are not taken.
MacQuick has a refrigeration system to keep the ingredients under a specific temperature for
prevention of rotten food. The refrigeration system contains a small motor which may cause an
irritant noise. We plan to reduce this noise to a very low level to prevent this type of disturbance.
Since we are storing and vending different kinds of food and since foods go bad after some time
it may cause bad smell which is an undesired situation. To prevent foods in the MacQuick to go
bad, the temperature will be kept around 15 degree Celsius with our refrigeration system. And
since the stored ingredients in MacQuick will be replaced daily, any bad smell of rotten food willbe prevented completely.
What about visual disturbance? The user is expected to take a plastic bowl and place it in the
output slot and the macaroni will be dropped into it. However, if the user does not place the bowl
into the output slot, the macaroni may fall on the floor which is definitely a cause of visual
discomfort. We plan to design a precautions system that does not allow to drop any macaroni
unless the sensors do not see the empty bowl in the output slot.
Simple Working Principle and Durability
MacQuick has a quite simple working principle. Placing the ingredients into slots and plugging
the machine in, is enough to make MacQuick fully functional and ready to serve. So it does not
require any knowledge, skills or extra effort to prepare MacQuick for a day to serve.
Sometimes there may be power cuts and this may cause malfunction of vending machines if it is
in process of vending. However, necessary precautions are taken this can be prevented.
MacQuick avoids any malfunction caused by power cuts with the help of “Uninterpretable
Power Supply ” (UPS). UPSs supply power to the MacQuick when the power is cut and keeps it
functioning.

Practical Use
Since MacQuick is a vending machine and will serve to any people, it is essential to make the
use of MacQuick as practical and simple as possible. In the process of vending, the customer will
use the bill validator and keypad. And all the process will be displayed in the LCD. The details
of these components are given under “Interfaces of the Product” topic. The whole interface is
designed to be simple and easy to use as stated under that topic.
Security
Since an interruption to the internal structure of MacQuick is an undesired situation; there will be
a padlock to prevent this situation. MacQuick will have a steel case which is also makes breaking
in even harder. There is also another security system of the bill validating system to keep the
paid money safe.
Interfaces of the ProductUser interface of the product basically consist of three parts: Payment system, LCD screen, 4x3
keypad a power supply
Payment System
In payment system of MacQuick, bill validator reads money and sends the amount of money as
information to microprocessor. Paying system will detect dollar ($). There will not be payment
back to user.
LCD Screen
Total credit of the customer, problem messages, informing messages such as the the message
shown when the macaroni is ready, are shown through LCD screen.

Keypad for Ingredient Selection
There exists a keypad like the one given in figure 2 in order to enable the customer choose the
ingredients that they will be added into their macaroni. If an ingredient button pressed
inadvertently by a customer, this can be easily compensated by pressing the “Clear” button. After
the ingredients are chosen, the customer presses the “Give me my Macaroni” button and the
process of preparing the macaroni starts.

Power Supply
This product will work with 220V AC 50Hz in normal conditions. In power cut situation, UPS
will step in system and MacQuick will continue to work properly.

Table 2: Physical Specifications of the Product
Height: 1800 mm
Width: 800 mm
Depth: 800 mm
Weight: 250 Kg
In addition to specifications mentioned above, MacQuick has some other properties. MacQuick
is approximately 250 Kg so that it is hard to carry. Hence, product is designed with four wheels.
Corners will be circular shaped to avoid possible accidents. Outside of product will covered by
an opaque material (steel is thought) and the inside of system will not be seen by costumers.Front door will help to full ingredients and there will be lock system. Height, width, depth and
weight values are calculated after these extra specifications.

Since our differentiation point is to provide healthier food to our customers compared to our
competitors, we aim to fulfill the necessities of Food Safety System Certification 22000.
FSSC22000 takes “Food Safety” as a global concern and tries to encourage the associations to
have more effective and harmonized food safety systems. Food Safety System Certification
22000 will increase the transparency from consumers’ perspective. We also want to have an
accreditation with ISO9001:2008 standard in the near future in order to increase quality
understanding within the company. By doing so, we will be able to increase profitability, market
share, employees’ satisfaction and customers’ satisfaction.
Quality Function DeploymentAs it is already emphasized in the definition, the main aim of the quality function deployment is
to integrate user demands into quality design process in order to obtain customer focused
products. Our aim is to shape related chats about technical and general product characteristics
according to the customer expectations.
Data Gathering
To find the right expectations of customers, we have created a sample that has similar
characteristics with our target group. This sample involves 50 students from 5 universities
including Bilkent, Boğaziçi METU, Ankara and Koc University; and 50 university stuff fromthese universities. We mainly aim to have a young population with different incomes and
characteristics. The survey is made to understand the willingness to use MacQuick from
consumers’ perspective since it does not exist on the market.
Characteristics of participants are shown in the figures:

The results of the matrix:
As a result of the relationship diagram, the most important product specification appears as
“simple working principle and durability”. Since it is the most essential requirement that has a
huge impact on functionality of the product, the result is quite predictable. The second most
important specifications appear to be “prevention disturbance to environment”, being quite
significant for essential customer requirements hygine, healthiness and friendly usage; and
“keypad for ingredient selection”, helping to increase the easiness of usage.

The trend of competitive analysis is shown in the figure:
ConclusionProduct requirements document is written to explain functions of product, interface definitions,
costs, standards, technical and physical specifications. Functions of product mainly points out
customer related details and functions consist of serving capacity, preventing disturbance, simple
working principle, durability, practical use and security. These functions will help users to see
their expectations from product. Payment system, LCD, keypad and power supply are explained
under interfaces of product. Technical specifications are also specified in two parts which are
electrical and physical specifications. Approximate value for the cost of MacQuick is given and
explanation about future planning of standardization of product is stated. Finally, we worked on
quality function deployment by integrating user demands to design and we show them in tables
and graphics.
