Introduction
The Advanced Process Manager(APM) is Honeywell’s most popularand well established TDC 3000data acquisition and control devicefor industrial process applications.
Like the Process Manager™ (PM),its predecessor, and the High-Performance Process Manager(HPM), its successor, the APMoffers a range of capabilities thatmeets today’s and tomorrow’sprocess requirements. The APMoffers highly flexible I/O functionsfor both data monitoring andcontrol. Powerful control functions, including regulatory, logic, andsequencing control are providedfor continuous, batch, or hybridapplications.
An optimal toolbox of functions thatcan be configured andprogrammed meets the needs ofdata acquisition and advancedcontrol requirements in a highlysecure and performance-intensivemanner. Of course, APM’scapabilities include peer-to-peercommunications and compatibility
with industry-standardcommunications protocols.
As shown in Figure 2, the APM is afully integrated member of the TDC3000X family. Accordingly, it iscapable of:
• Performing data acquisition andcontrol functions, includingregulatory, logic, and sequentialcontrol functions, as well aspeer-to-peer communicationswith other Universal ControlNetwork-resident devices.
• Providing bi-directionalcommunications to Modbus™and Allen-Bradley compatiblesubsystems through a serialinterface.
• Fully communicating withoperators and engineers atUniversal Stations, UXSs, andUniversal Work Stations.Procedures and displays areidentical or similar to those usedwith other TDC 3000Xcontrollers, as well as to HPMand PM point displays.
• Supporting higher level controlstrategies available on the LocalControl Network through theApplication Module and hostcomputers.
• Using the same I/O and wiringas the PM and HPM, thusproviding cost-effective upwardmigration from existing PMs aswell as the capability to migrateto HPMs in the future.
Universal Control Network
The communications channel forthe Advanced Process Manager isa local area network called theUniversal Control Network (UCN).Introduced to TDC 3000X users in1988, the UCN is the secure pathfor process I/O connections to theTDC 3000X.
The UCN features a 5 megabit persecond, carrier band communica-tion system with a token busnetwork. It is designed to becompatible with IEEE* and ISO**standards.
* Institute of Electrical and ElectronicsEngineers
** International Standards Organization
AP03-500Page 4
UCN communications areconsistent with the growth anddirection of evolving internationalstandards, with appropriateHoneywell extensions for secureprocess control applications.
The UCN uses redundant coaxialcables and can support up to 32redundant devices. The UCNsupports peer-to-peercommunication between deviceson this network. This featureenables sharing information amongHPMs, APMs, PMs, SafetyManagers, and Logic Managers onthe network, thus offeringtremendous power and flexibility inimplementing advanced, coordinated control strategies.
Network Interface Module
The Network Interface Module(NIM) provides the link betweenthe Local Control Network and theUniversal Control Network.Accordingly, it makes the transitionfrom the transmission techniqueand protocol of the Local ControlNetwork to the transmissiontechnique and protocol of theUniversal Control Network. TheNIM provides LCN module accessto data from UCN-resident devices. It supports program and databaseloads to the Advanced ProcessManager and forwards alarms andmessages from the networkdevices to the LCN. The NIM isalso available in a redundantconfiguration to provide automatic, continued operation in the event ofa primary failure.
LCN time and UCN time aresynchronized by the NIM. TheNIM broadcasts LCN time over theUCN. The APM (as well as theHPM) uses it for a number of time-driven functions, such as sequenceof events reporting.
Functional Description
Functional Overview
Note: This Specification andTechnical Data sheet covers theAdvanced Process Manager only.
For information about APMInput/Output Processors, whichare common to thePM/APM/HPM controller family, please refer to IO03-500,Process Manager I/OSpecification and TechnicalData.
The Advanced Process Manager isdesigned to provide flexible andpowerful process scanning andcontrol capabilities. To do this, ituses advanced multi-processorarchitecture with separatemicroprocessors dedicated toperform specific tasks. Asdepicted in Figure 3, the APMconsists of the Advanced ProcessManager Module (APMM) and theI/O Subsystem.
The Advanced Process ManagerModule consists of an AdvancedCommunication Processor andmodem, Advanced I/O LinkInterface Processor, and AdvancedControl Processor. A redundantAPMM can be optionally provided.
The Advanced CommunicationProcessor is optimized to providehigh-performance networkcommunications, handling suchfunctions as network data accessand peer-to-peer communications. It also supports high-accuracy timestamps.
The Advanced Control Processoris the APM resource dedicated toexecuting regulatory, logic, andsequence functions, including anexcellent user programmingfacility. Because communicationand I/O processing are performedby separate dedicated hardware, the full power of the AdvancedControl Processor can be appliedto control strategy implementation.
The Advanced I/O Link InterfaceProcessor is the APMM interfaceto its I/O subsystem.
The I/O Subsystem consists of theredundant I/O Link and up to 40redundant I/O Processors. TheseI/O Processors handle all field I/Ofor both data acquisition andcontrol functions. For example, theI/O Processors provide suchfunctions as engineering unitconversion and alarm limitchecking independent of theAdvanced Process ManagerModule.
One IOP which illustrates theadvanced capabilities of the APMI/O is the Smart TransmitterInterface. The Smart TransmitterInterface processor provides full bi-directional communication toHoneywell smart transmitters, supporting transmitterconfiguration and improved dataaccuracy. This includes therecently introduced Multivariabletransmitter capability.
All control operations areperformed within the AdvancedProcess Manager Module(optionally redundant), with all dataacquisition and signal conditioningbeing performed in I/O Processors. For added control security, redundancy is available for severalanalog and digital I/O processingdevices.
The remote I/O option allows I/OProcessors to be remote-mountedup to 8 kilometers from the APMfile. This option uses redundantfiber optic I/O Link extenders.
The process engineer hascomplete flexibility of choice in theassignment of point types andcontrol strategies, within themaximum APMM design limits. These selections are implementedusing the interactive tools providedby both the TDC 3000X UniversalStation and Universal WorkStation.

Control Functions
The Advanced Process ManagerModule (APMM) provides a varietyof control tools that can becustomized to address a widerange of process automationneeds.
Functions, from I/O scanningthrough regulatory and logiccontrol to more advanced control,
can be easily implemented throughthe APM. Included are asophisticated regulatory controlpackage, fully integrated interlocklogic functions, and an advancedprocess engineer-oriented ControlLanguage (CL/APM).
CL/APM is an enhanced version ofthe Control Language implementedby Honeywell in the ProcessManager. This language facility
includes the sequence structuresneeded to handle batch or hybridapplications as well as thecomputational capability neededfor some continuous control tasks.Key to the power of this controlcapability is the sharing of the datawithin the APM, and sharing ofdata from other devices on theUniversal Control Network.

All I/O values are converted toengineering units by the I/OProcessors and are madeavailable for both communicationsand further control processing bythe Advanced Process ManagerModule (see Figure 4).
Conceptually, the APMM can bethought of as partitioned into “slots”of various types. These slotsprovide an allocated resource ofprocessing power and memory thatcan be user-configured, includingassignment of a tag name.
A tagged slot is referred to as adata point in a TDC 3000 System. This data point structure issupported by predefined group anddetail displays as well as bycustom graphics.
Any of the following types of datapoints can be configured intoAPMM slots:
• Regulatory PV• Regulatory Control• Digital Composite• Logic• Device Control• Process Module• Array• Flag• Numeric• Timer• String• Time
Each of these data point types isdiscussed in the text that follows.
Regulatory PV Point
While standard I/O functions, suchas engineering unit conversion andalarming, are handled directly bythe I/O Processors, Regulatory PVpoints provide an easy-to-useconfigurable approach forimplementing Process Variable(PV) calculation and compensationfunctions. PV processing providesa menu of selectable algorithmssuch as mass flow, totalization,
and variable dead-timecompensation. In addition, a fullarray of selectable functions, including extensive alarm checkingand alarm suppression options, signal filtering, and algorithmequation options are provided.Available algorithms and othersupported functions are listed inTable 1.
Regulatory Control Point
Configurable regulatory (or analog)control functions are performedusing Regulatory Control points.Regulatory Control points areconfigured to execute one of thecontrol algorithms listed in Table 2.

Each algorithm includes a widerange of configurable options toallow implementation of complexcontrol strategies by a simplemenu-selection process. Inaddition, some functions, such asinitialization and windup protection, are inherently provided. Also, thecapability to ramp setpoint (byoperator entry of a target value andramp time) is configurable.Standard and custom graphicdisplays are available to supportthese control strategies.
These built-in support functions(see Table 2) significantly simplifythe implementation and use ofsophisticated multiloop controlstrategies. This ease of APMconfiguration and operation allowsimplementation of advancedcontrol strategies at the process-connected level.
At the same time, the slot structurefor processing and memoryresources is designed to ensurethat proper control security is builtinto advanced control strategies. This means that high reliability andintegrity are maintained over theentire range of control.
Digital Composite Point
Digital Composite points are multi-input/multi-output points thatprovide an interface to discretedevices, such as motors, pumps, and solenoid valves. (see Figure 5)
This point provides built-instructures for handling interlocks. Itsupports operator displays ofinterlock conditions in group, detail, and graphic displays.
Displays also contain information
needed to trace interlock cause. Inaddition, provision is made foroperation of hand/off/auto switchescommonly used for local operationof motorized devices.
The major parameters associatedwith the Digital Composite pointare represented pictorially inFigure 5. Runtime maintenancestatistics for the Digital Compositepoint device are also supported.
Logic Point
A Logic point provides aconfigurable mix of logic capability.Together with a digital compositepoint, it provides the basis forintegrated interlock logic functions.Conceptually, a Logic point can bethought of as the logic processingequivalent to one to two pages ofrelay ladder logic. A Logic pointconsists of logic blocks, flags, numerics, input connections, andoutput connections. Differentmixes of inputs, outputs, and logicblocks can be selected.Maximums for each type areshown in Table 3.
In addition to the logic blockfunctions listed in Table 4, theLogic point provides a general-purpose data transfer capabilitythat can be used to read data frominput connections and store thisdata to other database parametersdefined by the output connections.

Device Control Point
The Device Control point providesmaximum flexibility for controllingdiscrete devices. It combines thedigital composite display and logiccontrol function under a single tagname (see Table 5 and Figure 6).This provides an enhancedinterface for pumps, motors, andmotor-operated valves.
The Device Control point’s singletag name enhances the operatorinterface for motor control points.
Operations are improved becausethe operator can see the cause ofthe interlock. Also, an analogfeedback signal, such as motorcontrol current, is displayed.Implementation effort is alsoreduced through the use of asimple configuration and standardgraphics for troubleshooting.
User Programs Process Module Point
Today’s control strategiesfrequently need the flexibility ofuser programs that can be utilizedfor continuous, batch, or hybridapplications. A Process Modulepoint is a resource for theexecution of user-createdprograms written in Honeywell’sControl Language (CL/APM).
The CL language provides anoutstanding sequential control andcomputational tool. CL programsare self-documenting—animportant feature when futuremodification of control strategies isanticipated.
The total statement capacitydepends on configuration.Typically 10,000 to 20,000CL/APM statements can behandled by a single APM.

Using the Universal Station orUniversal Work Station, individualprograms can be easily modifiedand reloaded without affectingexecution of regulatory control, logic blocks, and other userprograms.
All process module programs canaccess the Advanced ProcessManager database, therebyaccessing analog inputs andoutputs, digital inputs and outputs, array points, logic block states, alarm states, and failure states, numeric variables, and flags.
CL/APM programs can alsomanipulate ASCII values as well astime data. In addition, eachprocess module program supportscommunication with the operatorand can send or receive data fromother controllers on the UCN.
Process module points provide aPhase/Step/Statement structurethat is well suited for implementingbatch process control functions. Inaddition, a multilevel abnormal
handling capability allows user-specified conditions toautomatically trigger pre-definedHold, Shutdown, or EmergencyShutdown sequences.
Array Point
The Array point provides a moreflexible, easy to access pointstructure for user-defined data. Itis especially useful for advancedcontrol or batch sequenceprograms. For example, an Arraypoint can be used to storecalculation variables or batchrecipe data. This Array point datais available to the system for localdata acquisition and controlstrategies as well as historization.
Up to 256 Array points can beconfigured per APM.
Each array point is a logicalgrouping of internal APM boxglobal variables up to:
• 1023 Flags (boolean)• 240 Numeric• 240 Strings• 240 Times
A subset of Array points can beused for Serial Interface (SI)communications. Up to 80 SerialInput Array points can be accessedat a 1 second rate per APM, 40 ata 1/2 second rate, or 20 at a 1/4second rate.
A single Serial Interface Arraypoint can handle:
• 512 Flags (Boolean) or• 16 Numerics (Reals) or• 32 Numerics (Integers) or• 64 Characters of String Data.
Communication to any SerialInterface Array point is fullybidirectional (read and write). Datafrom any Serial Interface Arraypoint can be accessed by otherAPM control and CL functions suchas Device Control points. Thisallows subsystem data to be usedfor APM data acquisition andcontrol strategies, as well asdisplayed at the Universal Station,UXS and UWS.
Flag Point
A Flag point is a two-state (On/Off)point that is used for storing aBoolean value. Flag points are notscheduled and are not processed.Their state is changed fromanother function, such as byoperator input or a user-writtenprogram.
Provision is made for up to 16,384Box Flag points, the first 128 ofwhich can be configured for off-normal alarming.
Numeric Point
Numeric points are used forstorage of real numbers.

They are used for batch/recipeoperations, or as a scratch pad tostore the intermediate results ofcalculations.Like Flag points, they are notscheduled or processed, but arechanged as the result of othersystem activity. There can be upto 16,384 Numeric points.
Timer Point
The Timer point allows for timing ofprocess events by the operator orsequence program. After beingstarted, it provides an indicationwhen the elapsed time hasreached a predefined limit. Thereare 64 timer slots—each isprocessed once per second.
String
The String variable adds increasedflexibility to both continuous andbatch oriented CL controlprograms. String variables of 8,16, 32, or 64 characters can becompared and modified by theAPM Control Language (CL).Using CL, you can manipulate andstore unique messages that pertainto your process. Also, with this Serial Interface,ASCII data from a subsystem canbe imported and used as Stringvariables, as well as written backto the subsystem.Up to 16,384 eight characterstrings are supported.
Time
The Time variables allow CLprograms access to both time anddate information. CL programscan use elapsed or actual wall-clock time. Time-dates can beadded or subtracted as needed.
Time allows you to schedule CLprograms by time of day. You canalso construct control schemes byallowing a logic slot access to timeof day information. Up to 4,096times are supported.
Control Implementation
A simple control loop can beimplemented in an AdvancedProcess Manager, using an analoginput point, a regulatory controlpoint, and an analog output pointas illustrated in Figure 7.
Although three data points areused, the primary operatorinterface is a single tag (FC101) forviewing, alarming, andmanipulation in the customarymanner through a Group, Detail, orCustom Graphic display.
Control Performance
The Advanced Process Manager isa high-performance device capableof an assured rate of 160regulatory or discrete control loopsper second. Users can customizetheir control configuration to meetthe application requirements.
The parallel processingarchitecture of the AdvancedProcess Manager allows thecontrol processing capability of theAPM to be totally independent ofother APM functions such as thenumber of I/O points built, datarequests for APM data from theNetwork Interface Module andother UCN devices, and alarmingfunctions. Only two factors mustbe considered when configuringthe control processing—the type ofcontrol points (slots) desired andtheir frequency of execution, orscheduling interval. Theprocessing power of the AdvancedControl Processor is measured interms of “Processing Units (PUs).”Each Advanced Control Processorhas an assured rate of 160 PUsper second. Regulatory, logic, digital composite, and devicecontrol points can be configured atdifferent execution frequencies(1/4, 1/2, or 1 second).
A subset of these points can beoptionally configured for a 1/4-second rate, with the remainder ata slower rate. Since points usemore processing power at fasterfrequencies, this feature allows theuser to implement the greatestpossible number of control loopswhile still assuring high-speedprocessing where required.

Still another option available foroptimizing APM configuration is theselection between two programsizes for Process Module points.Users with sequence programsthat process approximately 10statements per second (or fewer)can implement twice as many suchprograms (160 instead of 80). Thisis possible because the smallerprograms require less time to runand, therefore, are assigned onlyhalf as many Processing Units.
Typically, small programs are usedfor modular batch applications andlarge programs for continuousapplications.

Alarm System Functions
APM supports the extensive andflexible alarming capabilities ofTDC 3000X. As process alarmsoccur, they are visuallyannunciated at the UniversalStation through keyboard LEDsand numerous types of displays, such as custom graphic displays, group displays, alarm annunciatordisplays, and alarm summaries. They can also be externallyannounced through customer-supplied devices activated bycontact closures at the UniversalStation. Because alarms can bereported on an area or unit basis, operators receive alarm indicationsthat relate to only their specificassignments.
For APM process variables, thefollowing alarms can beconfigured:
• Hi • Rate of Change Hi
• HiHi • Rage of Change Lo
• Lo • Significant Change
• LoLo • Deviation Hi/Lo
• Bad PV • Advisory Deviation
• Bad Output (RegCtl Point only)
All PV alarms can have aselectable deadband. Alarms canbe assigned to both I/O Processorsand APMM slots. In general, to
provide a single tag for operatorinterface, when an I/O point isused by an APMM slot, the alarmsare configured in the APMM slot.
The following digital alarm typesare available:
• Uncommanded Change-of-State
• Off-normal alarms
• Command disagree alarms
• Logic input, flag, or gate outputalarms
• Alarms forced by CL program
• Command Fail alarms
• User-defined alarms
Off-normal alarms feature aconfigurable time deadband.Command disagree, command fail, and uncommanded change-of-state are types of alarms that applyto digital composite points.
Alarm priority is individuallyconfigured for each alarm typeused on a Advanced ProcessManager point. There are sevenselectable alarm priorities:
• Emergency
• High
• Low
• Journal
AP03-500Page 12
• Journal and Printer
• Printer Only
• No Action
Contact cutout is anotherconfigurable feature provided bythe Advanced Process Manager.Contact cutout is used toautomatically suppress alarmreporting on a point if certainexternal conditions occur.
Security
The APM has a number of securityfeatures to provide maximumprocess availability. A high-reliability fault-tolerant approach toboth circuitry and overall systemarchitecture has been used. CMOStechnology, including highly heat-tolerant components, provides ahigh-density design with highreliability. Parallel power paths areemployed so that control outputscan be maintained, even in thecase of power regulator failure.
Redundancy for communicationsmedia, such as the I/O link and theUCN, is provided as a standardfeature. Optional APMMredundancy is offered to provideone-on-one backup and auto-switchover for the commonelectronics. Optional I/Oredundancy for HLAI, STI, AO, DI,and DO points can provide addedsecurity for critical control loops.
Since redundancy options aredesigned into the product, automatic switchover from primaryto redundant electronics is fullysupported. No special userprogramming is required. Ongoingdiagnostics are provided to assureboth primary and redundantelectronics are functional. Thisone-on-one redundancy approachenhances coverage to maximizeavailability. It also simplifiessystem cabling and configuration.
Optional power redundancy andbattery backup can be provided forassured power availability.
Extensive self-diagnostics areemployed to diagnose APMoperation and identify any failure.Failures are characterized as hardfailure (HF) or soft failure (SF).The APM status is clearly indicatedat the standard status displays atthe Universal Station.
Repairs to the HPM can be madeeasily by replacing boards whilepower is on. Analog and DigitalStandby Manual Units areavailable to maintain processoutputs during board replacementof non-redundant boards. Overall, the APM provides outstandingcontrol capabilities with excellentprocess control availability andsecurity.
Physical Characteristics
The Advanced Process Managerconsists of single or redundantAdvanced Process ManagerModules, I/O Processors, associated card files, FieldTermination Assemblies, and asingle or redundant powerassembly mounted in a cabinet.Either top or bottom field wire entryis available.
Because CMOS technology isused, power requirements andheat dissipation are extremely low.The Advanced Process Manager isalso highly space efficient becauseof flexible I/O architecture, lowpower use, and high-densityterminations.
The APM has been approved byFactory Mutual for mounting in, orinterfacing to, devices in a Class 1,Division 2 area for the followingsignal types:
• Low Level Analog Input• High Level Analog Input• STI• Analog Output• Pulse Input• 24 Vdc Digital Input
Power Systems
The Advanced Process Managerhas significantly lower powerrequirements than traditionaldesigns because it uses low-powerCMOS technology. Two powersystems are available to meetdifferent system requirements.
The standard APM power systemprovides an integrated systembattery backup option. The powersystem can also be easilyupgraded to redundancy in thefield.
The AC-only power system isintended for use with UPS systemsand does not have provision forsystem battery backup. It canprovide more cost effective powerfor a small, remote I/O installationwhere a UPS is available.
Both power systems provide24 Vdc power to the AdvancedProcess Manager Module and I/OSubsystem, and 24 Vdc transmitterpower is provided throughstandard FTA connections. Bothpower systems support single orredundant power supplies in ahighly compact space.
Both power systems provide 50-hour memory backup; the standardsystem includes rechargeablebatteries with a charger, while theAC-Only power system usesalkaline batteries.
Each power supply on bothsystems provide a relay with aForm-A contact output that de-energizes (contact opens) in theevent of power loss.
A single LED on each powermodule of the AC-Only systemannunciates power loss, while thestandard system has separate LEDindicators for:
• Loss of ac power• Loss of dc power• Improper charging of backup

Whenoptions such as I/O redundancyand/or remote I/O are used, configurations with up to 8 cardfiles can be provided. One or twocard files contain the AdvancedProcess Manager Module(s). Allremaining card file slots can befilled with any combination of I/O
Processors. A single cabinet holdsup to 35 I/O Processors along withredundant Advanced ProcessManager Modules. Alternatively, itholds up to 40 I/O Processors witha single Advanced ProcessManager Module. Figure 8 showsthe cabinet layout with redundantAPMMs.
Input/Output Functions
Please refer to IO03-500,Process Manager I/OSpecification and Technical Datafor more details, modelnumbers, and specifications.
The following is an overview ofHPM I/O functions and capabilities.
Input/Output Processors
Input/Output Processors (IOPs),along with Field TerminationAssemblies (FTAs), perform inputand output scanning andprocessing on all field I/O. Aredundant I/O Link is standard foradded security. Most IOPs areavailable in a redundantconfiguration. I/O processing isperformed separately from controlprocessing functions, so that I/Oscan rates are completelyindependent of I/O quantity, controller loading, processing, andalarming. This partitioning offunctions allows more efficient useof advanced control processorcapabilities and provides for futureI/O expansion.
A variety of I/O processors areavailable for the APM:
• Analog Input—High Level(16 points)
• Analog Input—Low Level(8 points)
• Analog Input—Low LevelMultiplexer (32 points)
• Smart Transmitter MultivariableInterface (16 points total)
• Analog Output (8 points)
• Analog Output (16 points)
• Serial Device Interface(16 points—2 ports)
• Serial Interface(32 arrays, 2 ports)
• Pulse Input (8 points)
• Digital Input (32 points)
• Digital Input 24 Vdc (32 points)
• Digital Input SOE (32 points)
• Digital Output (16 points)
• Digital Output (32 points)
Any mix of the above I/Oprocessors can be selected for anAPM. This can be anycombination of single and/orredundant (HLAI, STI, AO, DI,DISOE, and DO) pairs, up to atotal of 40. Even with themaximum complement of 80
AP03-500Page 14
physical IOPs, there is no impacton control or communicationperformance. In a redundantconfiguration, I/O processingautomatically transfers to thebackup I/O processor when aboard failure occurs.
Field Termination Assemblies
All connections to and from theprocess are made to FieldTermination Assemblies (FTAs).Compression-type terminationblocks (that can accept wire sizesas large as 14 AWG or 1.6 mm)are available for all FTAs. Screw-type terminations can also beprovided for most FTAs. The FTAsare connected to the I/Oprocessors by cables that can beup to 50 meters in length.
While a separate FTA of a giventype is required to handle varyingfield wiring signal levels, identicalI/O Processors can generally beused. This I/O approach simplifiessystem hardware selection andminimizes spare partsrequirements. For example, oneDigital Input Processor can handle24 Vdc, 120 Vac, or 240 Vac,depending on the FTA selected.
Galvanically Isolated FTAs
These FTAs are available forconnecting to field devices in NECClass1 Division 1 Hazardous(classified) locations or CenelecZone 0 locations.
Wiring and installation aresimplified because integralgalvanically isolated intrinsic safetyisolator modules are part of theFTA. Please refer to GA03-100,Galvanic Isolation/ IntrinsicSafety Specification andTechnical Data for furtherinformation.
Options
Advanced Process ManagerModule Redundancy
In addition to the UCN, the I/OLink, and dc power cabling, whichare always redundant, the APMMis available with a one-on-oneredundancy option. To minimizethe impact of a single failure, thedatabase and functions within thebackup APMM are kept up-to-datewith the primary. If failure of theprimary is detected by diagnostics, the backup APMM automaticallytakes over from the primary andthe operator is notified by a systemalarm. The primary and secondaryAPMM can be located in separatecard files to maximize controlfunction availability.
Power System Redundancy
Both standard and AC-only powersystems include the option for aredundant 24 Vdc power supply. In both cases, two different acfeeds can be used for the powersystem. With the standard powersystem, the second power supplymay be added at a future date.
I/O Redundancy
A one-on-one I/O redundancyoption is also available for criticalhigh level analog inputs, smarttransmitter interface connections, analog outputs, digital inputs, anddigital outputs. This option offerssignificantly increased availabilityof automatic control by providingcontinuous operation throughfailure and replacement of I/OProcessors, FTA cables, andbackplanes. Up to 40 I/OProcessors can be supported in aredundant or non-redundantAdvanced Process Manager, andthe user can selectively applyredundancy to some or all IOPs,for a maximum of 40 IOP pairs. The one-on-one design approachoffers maximum coverage and fastswitchover times. Integrity of thebackup database and of the
switching functions is providedthrough the extensive diagnosticcoverage made possible by theprocessing capability of the smartI/O Processors.
Standby Manual
The 16-point digital output FTAand both analog output FTAs (8-point and 16-point) supportconnection to a standby manualunit. This option allows outputs tobe maintained during I/OProcessor replacement.
Battery Backup
An option to the standard APMpower system is a backup batterycapable of providing regulated24 Vdc power in the event of theloss of ac input power. The batteryis a compact set of gel cells that ismounted within the cabinet’s powersystem enclosure. A fully chargedbattery provides a minimum of 20minutes of backup for a fullyloaded Advanced ProcessManager.
Diagnostic and alarm capabilitiesinform the operator of the existingstate of readiness of the batteryand charger.
Because backup batteries provideinput to the power supplies ratherthan powering the load directly, voltage regulation is equally asgood when operating from eitherbatteries or line power. If linepower fails, load power is notinterrupted during switchover. For the AC-only power system, linepower backup is typically achievedby connecting a UPS to one of thetwo ac feeds.
I/O Simulation Option
The optional APM I/O Simulatorpackage simulates the functions ofthe APM’s Input/Output Processors(IOPs). It is a low cost, high fidelitytool for database building, controlstrategy checkout, and operatortraining support without the needfor IOPs to be present. A uniquefeature of this optional package is
AP03-500Page 15
complete database transportabilitybetween the Simulation personalityand the APM On-Process (normaloperating) personality. This isespecially useful for configuring thesystem before the physical I/O isavailable or connected. Featuresof the package include:
• 'Bumpless' pause/resumeinterruption/restart
• Physical IOPs, FTAs and fieldwiring not required
• Simulation status indicated andjournaled
• Data base (checkpoint)transportable to target system
• Simulation rerun from saveddata base using PV data
• Full peer-to-peer capability• I/O functions simulated by
Communications processor• Any I/O configuration can be
simulated• Simulation load and status
supported on system network• Fault response testing & I/O
redundancy simulation
The benefits of this packageinclude:
• The ability to perform highfidelity simulation
• Control strategy checkout• Operator training• Project cost savings
Remote I/O
Two Remote I/O options areavailable. Both enable distributionof I/O Processors and FTAs at up tosix remote sites. One optionsupports remote sites up to 1kilometer from the main APM, whilethe second option provides forseparation of up to 8 kilometers.FTAs at the remote locations canbe located an additional 50 metersfrom the I/O processors, and LLAIMUX, Serial Device or SerialInterface FTAs can be placed anadditional 300 meters away.
Significant reduction of signal wireruns are possible with this option.Redundant fiber optic cablesprovide immunity to groundpotential differences and EMI/RFIinterference. Redundant linkseach require an I/O Link ExtenderPair (IOLE) at both ends. TheRemote I/O (1 km) option supportsup to three remote sites for eachIOLE at the APM end, while theLong Distance I/O (8 km) optionrequires one APM IOLE per site.
Corrosion Protection Option
As electronic boards have becomemore compact, sensitivity tocorrosion has increased. Inaddition, a trend toward locatingI/O closer to the process to saveinstallation costs has generated arequirement for environmentallyhardened products. To provideextra corrosion protection whenAPM equipment cannot be locatedin a mild (G1) environment,conformally-coated boards areavailable. These boards arecompletely covered with a thinplastic film resistant to thecorrosive effects of humidity andcertain gases, and are thussuitable for placement in a harsh(G3) atmosphere. Coating isoptional for most APMcomponents, such as IOPs, FTAs,power supplies, backplanes, andprocessor boards. Somecomponents, however, are coatedas a standard, such as the HLAIIOP, AO IOP, and 16 amp APMpower supply.
All coated products are denoted bya “C” in the second character oftheir model number. Uncoatedboards maintain the standard MU-xxxxxx style numbers. All productsfor which conformal coating isavailable have two model numbers. For example, the uncoated DI IOPmodel number is MU-PDIX02, andthe coated version is MC-PDIX02.In order to easily identify coatedIOPs in the field, they are labeledwith a distinctive symbol located ontheir faceplate (see Figure 9). The“C” surrounded by a solid diamond
(the universal symbol of hardness)represents the protection thisconformal coating process provides.

Note: Boards installed andmaintained in a G1 (mild) controlroom environment (defined by theISA Environmental SeverityClassification) do not need thisadded protection.
European Community (EC)Compliance
The APM is available in compliancewith European Community (EC)directive requirements, denoted bythe “CE mark” (CommunauteEuropeene). This complianceextends to the APMM, cardfiles, power supplies, IOPs and FTAs, aswell as to Rittal cabinets. As ofJanuary 1, 1996, all goods importedinto the European community ormoving between member countriesmust be compliant with the new ECdirectives.
For APM, customers must choosewhether or not CE compliance isneeded. APMMs, IOPs, and powersupplies are only available CE-compliant. For cardfiles and someFTAs, both compliant and non-compliant versions are available.Only Rittal cabinets are CE-compliant. Please refer to IO03-500, Process Manager I/OSpecification and Technical Data, for IOP/FTA details.
AP03-500Page 16
Note that the following are some ofthe conditions required in order forCE compliance to be met:
• All FTAs must be connected toIOPs (no unconnected parts).
• Shielded FTA cables must beused if outside a cabinet.
• The system must be mountedinto a Rittal cabinet perHoneywell specifications.
• All cabinet doors must be fullyclosed.
• Standard Honeywell/Rittalmounting plate and channelsmust be used.
• The system must be installedaccording to the Honeywellinstructions.
• The system must be groundedper Honeywell instructions.
Harsh Environment Option
To help reduce wiring andinstallation costs, as well as freeup valuable control room space, aRemote Hardened I/O (RHIO)NEMA4X sealed cabinet option isavailable for remotely mountingAPM I/O. Backplanes and powersupplies included with RHIO areconformally coated.
When populated with conformallycoated IOPs, FTAs, and FiberOptic Extenders, the RHIO optionprovides a GX ‘Severe’environment product rating againstcorrosion due to humidity andcorrosive gases in remotelocations.
The IOP cabinet accommodates a7-slot file and a redundant 8-amppower supply and is available as astandard product; the FTA cabinetmust be custom ordered due to themany variations of FTA sizes andlayouts.
