TCAP COACH LESSON MULTIPLYING FRACTIONS AND MIXED NUMBERS

Lesson 7Pages: 44-47

Getting the Idea

To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators and then the denominators.

To multiply a fraction by a whole number, rename the whole number as an improper fraction with a denominator of 1

Example 1

5x2/3=[ ] Strategy: Convert the whole number to an Improper

Fraction.Step 1: Rename the whole number as an

improper fraction.5= 5/1

Step 2: Multiply the Numerators and multiply the denominators

5/1x2/3 = 5x2/1x3 = 10/3Step 3: Convert the improper fraction to a mixed number in simplest form.

10/3 = 3&1/3 Solution: 5x2/3 = 3 &1/3

Sometimes you can cancel like terms by dividing a numerator and a denominator by the GCF before multiplying. This will help in multiplying easier numbers.

Helpful Hint

Example 2

5/8x2/15 Strategy: Cancel like terms, then multiply.

Step 1: Divide 5 and 15 by the GCF, which is 51/8x2/3

Step 2: Divide 8 and 2 by the GCF, which is 21/4x1/3

Step 3: Multiply1/4x1/3 = 1/12

Solution: 5/8x2/15= 1/12

Helpful Hints

To multiply mixed numbers, rename each mixed number as an improper fraction first. Remember these steps for converting a mixed number to an improper fraction Multiply the whole number part by the denominator

of the fraction part. Add that product to the numerator of the fraction

part. That sum becomes the numerator of the improper

fraction. The denominator of the improper fraction stays the

same.

Example 3

6&5/9x 4&2/3 Strategy: Convert each mixed number to an improper

fraction.Step 1: Convert 6&5/9 to an improper fraction.(6x9)+5=59 6&5/9 59/9Step 2: Convert 4&2/3 to an improper fraction.(4x3)+2=14 4&2/3 14/3Step 3: There are not like terms to cancel so multiply.59/9x14/3 = 826/27Step 4: Convert the improper fraction to a mixed number.826/27= 30R16 30& 16/27

Solution: 6&5/9x 4&2/3= 30&16/27
