Benefits of SD-WAN Solutions/Important Considerations
The Citrix white paper “Finding the Best SD-WAN Product for your Enterprise: Criteria for Evaluation
Software Defined WAN Products.” points out the value of SD-WAN Solutions and important points in
evaluation a SD-WAN solution. It is an excellent resource to use with customers. It does not compare
products but uses features of Citrix SD-WAN solution as examples when describing important features.
Wide Area Networks are critical to enterprise’s computing infrastructure. However, WANs suffer from
many issues including outages, packet loss, and congestion. Applications that require low-latency such
as VoIP calling, video conferencing, video streaming, and virtualized applications and desktops is
especially sensitive to these issues.
Also, WAN’s can be complicated, expensive, and difficult to expand and manage.
SD-WAN products address these problems. Deployed as appliances or virtual appliances placed in
branch offices, data centers or cloud platforms, they provide the following benefits:
2
• Traffic routing on the fastest available paths between any two points
• Better quality of service (QoS) for high-priority applications
• Improved network security
• Simplified administration for remote and branch offices
• Ability to leverage low-cost and flexible Internet and 4G LTE network connections in place of networks multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) links.
• Visibility into WAN paths to help administrators troubleshoot performance issues
Important Factors for Customers Selecting a SD-WAN Solution
When considering a SD-WAN solution, evaluators should consider the following areas:
Resiliency and failover
Failure of a network link, even temporarily, can have a significant impact on an organization’s business.
Important considerations include: Reliable packet delivery, real-time detection of outages, and dynamic
path selection for failover
Prioritization and Quality of Service
Not all applications need the same level of service from the network. Some applications require low-
latency and high performance to deliver an expected user experience. Important considerations
include application prioritization, traffic shaping and bandwidth reservation, packet duplication, and
dynamic point-to-point connections.
Application Optimization
All SD-WAN products provide basic compression and caching. Some SD-WAN solutions provide
advanced techniques such as advanced deduplication, protocol acceleration, ‘application fluency’ and
video delivery optimization.
Security
Most SD-WAN solutions use IP-SEC encryption to protect data in motion. Some include additional such
as rotating keys and splitting designated application traffic across multiple links. A few products can
also inspect SSL/TSL encrypted tunnels.
Deployment Options and Scaling
Most SD-WAN solutions are available as pre-configured appliances. Some vendors offer a choice of
deployment options including appliances, virtual appliances, and virtual appliances on cloud platforms.
Administration and Troubleshooting
Some SD WAN products need more effort to configure and manage. More advanced solutions provide
easy-to-use GUI interfaces and use algorithms to select paths automatically. A few also implement a
real “software-defined networking” approach.
3

Use Cases for NetScaler SD-WAN
Business Continuity and IT Disaster Recovery
Every network is vulnerable to risk ranging from natural disasters to minor disruptions. Remote access
and WAN technologies are essential to ensure server availability and access to business-critical
applications and data to keep the business operational. Availablity includes the user experience, where
users should not be forced to restart, reconnect, or log-in to applications during the failover and
recovery process. A SD-WAN can be a vital part of a comprehensive business continuity and IT
disaster recovery strategy.
• Automatic Transition NetScaler SD-WAN automatically and seamlessly redirects traffic across
any available connection. User’s primary access IP address remains unchanged, allowing users
to access their apps and data using the same methods and devices.
• Secure Access By delivering apps, data, and applications in the same way users are
accustomed, the same inherent security, control, compliance monitoring, and tracking are
maintained even in an ‘interrupted’ situation.
• Sub-Second WAN Failover Every MPLS and broadband connection is continuously monitored
by tagging packets with sequence numbers. Destination appliances can detect path outages
after just two or three missed packets, allowing seamless sub-second failover of traffic to the
next-best WAN path. Appliances detect when connections are restored and seamlessly restore
original connections.
• Competition Competing solutions cannot match this level of failover performance.
• Lower WAN Costs Many organizations WANs are running at capacity. Expanding a networks
MPLS solutions can be expensive. Alternatives such as broadband and other internet
connections are less expensive but might not meet the needs of all applications.
• Expand your WAN bandwidth with a low-cost MLPS alternative A NetScaler-SD WAN
solution can unite disparate networks into a single logical, virtualized WAN and provide a cost
savings of up to 80 percent vs. traditional MPLS expansion.
• Savings with Broadband, without sacrificing MPLS reliability NetScaler SD-WAN allows
leveraging lower-cost broadband and mobile connections to deliver the same reliability as MPLS
– at a lower cost.
• No Wasted Bandwidth NetScaler SD-WAN ensures that all bandwidth is available at all times
through its path unique path bonding and selection while providing seamless failover.
• Simplified Management and Analysis Administrators can configure and manage a NetScaler
SD-WAN solution from a single intuitive management platform – allowing changes to be made
quickly, lowering costs.
5
Improve Application Performance for Mobile, Remote, and Branch Users
Network speed, reliability, and security are crucial as companies rely on applications that tax networks,
such cloud applications, VoIP, and large video files. Application acceleration and WAN optimization
ensure secure, reliable performance for all users.
• Application Delivery Acceleration NetScaler ADC is designed to streamline and optimize the
app experience. It optimizes applications over many types of networks to maximize packet
transmission for accelerated application delivery. NetScaler ADC is also able to provide
connection multiplexing for TCP and SQL connections, along with compression mechanisms
and cache application data packets.
• WAN Bandwidth Optimization NetScaler SD-WAN also optimizes WAN bandwidth to improve
app performance for branch or mobile uses by allowing organizations to software-define their
WAN - driving up the overall WAN utilization. Optimization is accomplished through WAN
virtualization, application acceleration, video optimization, branch service delivery, and visibility
and insight into WAN and application performance.
Improve VoIP for Business Performance and Quality
Voice over IP (VoIP) applications are vital to an organizations unified communications platform, which
combine voice, email, fax and video with internal IT systems and applications. These applications need
optimized performance and bandwidth to provide the QoS required to function efficiently.
• Reliability NetScaler SD-WAN binds multiple MPLS, mobile, and broadband paths into a single
path. Traffic is adjusted on the fly to route real-time applications, such as VoIP, to the lowest-
latency, least congested path.
• WAN Bandwidth Optimization NetScaler SD-WAN optimizes WAN bandwidth to improve app
performance for branch or mobile uses by allowing organizations to software-defined their WAN
- driving up the overall WAN utilization.
• Savings with Broadband, without sacrificing MPLS reliability NetScaler SD-WAN allows
leveraging lower-cost broadband and mobile connections to deliver the same reliability as MPLS
– at a lower cost.
• Automatic Transition NetScaler SD-WAN automatically and seamlessly redirects traffic across
any available connection. User’s primary access IP address remains unchanged, allowing users
to access their apps and data using the same methods and devices.
• High QoS Granular Setting Control NetScaler SD-WAN provides granular controls allowing
categories or individual applications (like Skype for Business and other VoIP applications) to
receive the highest real-time QoS settings. If a particular path assigned to VoIP slows or is
interrupted, it is dynamically rerouted within milliseconds to the best one available. Also,
NetScaler SD-WAN’s ability to duplicate packets ensures voice quality.
6
