Synthetic Biology Communities in Practice
UCSF Mission BayApril 6 2011
Tonight
0. Why are we meeting again?
• Who are we?
• What are we already doing?
• What (else) could/should we be doing (better)?
• What are our next steps?
0. Wait, why are we meeting again?
Synthetic Biology Practices (@ SynBERC, beyond)
VISION & GOALS: We are working with all SynBERC researchers and partners to ensure that the practice of synthetic biology benefits all people and the planet. We envision that each member of the community can help to consider and develop leading examples of responsible synthetic biology in practice.
What does a responsible community in practice look like? What do we do?
1. Who are we?
2. What are we already doing?

3.2 Your proposals
3.1.1 Practices Discussion & Working Groups
community groups meeting regularly to discuss & work on topics of interest (‘gaps’)
learn together & invite others
produce concrete deliverables (activities, white/research papers, commentaries)

3.1.1.1 SB Leaders in Practice Working Group @ Stanford
Educating & Engaging in Practice
What do we consider ‘practices basics’, why do we need them and how do we teach them?
What does ‘prudent vigilance’ look like?
How do we lead in practice(s)?
Deliverables: Leaders in Practice Workshop (& Curriculum, Reports)

3.1.2 SB Leaders in Practice Workshop v1
open call to ‘young investigators’ (<PI)describe something limiting the positive advancement of SB and propose a strategy for addressing it
building capacities‘practices basics’ & ‘state of synthetic biology’ (w/ invited guests)
developing strategiesproposal evaluation and revision by peers, guests
rank priorities & identify gapsconstruct innovation roadmap, write white paper / commentary, task participants
format4-5 days in-residencework, play, socialize
location: remote, actual camp idealsize: <25 participants, <10 guests

Synthetic Biology - What could it be? What are we missing? What is holding us back?
Have a big idea? Throw it down at the inaugural Synthetic Biology Slam: a pre-SB5.0 workshop of fast-paced creative talks, plentiful
discussion and real-time building of a roadmap for synthetic biology. Meet other innovative thinkers, get feedback, and find new
ideas and partners for good work that lies ahead.
The SB Slam will be held on the evening of June 14th, right before SB 5.0 kicks off. We will provide beverages and a stage—you will bring your best ideas on what the future holds for Synthetic
Biology! Each person will have 5 minutes to present their vision for how the field should evolve over the next few years. We hope to
assemble everyone's ideas into a co-authored SB 5.0 poster presenting our collective "roadmap" for Synthetic Biology.
3.1.4 Welcome to Synthetic Biology SynBERC Bootcamp
An afternoon workshop (before the fall SynBERC retreat?) to introduce new members to the synthetic
biology community
