ADVERB Adverbs are words that describe verbs. They answer the questions how, when, why or

to what extent.

Examples of adverbs are:

John runs quickly.

“Quickly” describes how he runs.

He quietly whispers to his partner.

“Quietly” describes how he whispers.

PLURAL Meaning more than one. Usually ends in “s” or “es”.Example:

Sally has two dogs. The word two show’s that the

sentence is plural.

INTERROGATIVE Is a sentence that forms a question. It is punctutated with a question mark. Example:

Did you get a new cell phone?

DECLARATIVE• A sentence that makes a statement or

declaration and ends with a period.

Example: I would like a slice of pie.

ATLAS

An atlas is a book full of maps of roads and boundaries.

ENCYCLOPEDIA

An encyclopedia is a collection of books that tell facts in alphabetical order.

The use of certain marks to clarify meaning of written material by grouping words into sentences, clauses and phrases.

A book of antonyms and synonyms. The boy searched through the

thesaurus looking for a variety of words to use in his story.

or sequence; one after another. I made the cake by following the

directions given in sequential order.

First, add egg, oil, and water to the flour.Next, mix ingredients for two minutes.Finally, pour batter into a 9x13 greased pan and bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

INTERNET

A global network connecting millions of computers, making it possible to exchange information.

ORGANIZATION Putting things in an order that

makes sense, writing a strong lead and conclusion, and connecting ideas with transitions.

SUPPORTING DETAILS Details that give you more

information about the main idea. The main idea is the bridge and

the supporting details are the pillars.

SUMMARIZE To describe the main idea and important

details of a passage using your own words.

The teacher asked me to summarize the paragraph.

I read all of the information and used my brain like a funnel to sift out only the important information. I included the main idea and supporting details stated in my own words.
