Be!open!to!change:!Our!approach!is!not!the!only!one,!just!the!one!that!has!worked!best!for!us.!We!are! not! trying! to! change! the! way! you! may! play! in! your! band,! percussion! ensemble,! etc.! The!technique! is! something!each!player! in! the!ensemble!will!have! to!adapt! to.! If!you!work!with!us! to!figure!out! and!achieve! the! technique,! you!will! learn!how!you! can!use! the! technique! in! your!own!approach!to!your!band,!solos,!percussion!ensemble,!etc.!
Uniformity:!DCI!is!an!activity!that!is!based!in!uniformity!of!approach.!Different!from!a!Symphonic!setting,!we!routinely!ask!several!people!to!perform!unison!or!similar!parts.!Through!uniformity!we!convey! a! sense! of! professionalism! and! confidence! to! the! audience.! Posture,! facial! expressions,!moving!from!instrument!to!instrument,!mallet!changes,!and!pulling!instruments!on!and!off!the!field!are! all! taken! into! account! and! timed.! Uniformity! is! essential! in! producing! balanced! sounds! from!player!to!player,!as!well!as!a!unified!interpretation!of!the!music!we!are!performing.!
Practice!is!mandatory!and!to!be!done!on!your!own!time!so!that!you!are!prepared!for!all!rehearsals.!There! is! a! difference! between!practice! and! rehearsing.! Practicing! is!what! you! do! to! get! ready! to!rehearse.! Rehearsing! is! combining! everyone’s! individual! efforts! to! make! the! group! better! as! a!whole!in!preparation!for!a!performance.!

Battery
Being!a!member!of!the!battery!(or!Drum!Line)!is!a!challenging!task.!!It!requires!individuals!to!be!in!peak!mental!and!physical!shape.!Physical!shape!and!mental!focus!will!play!a!large!role!during!the!evaluation!process!of!the!auditions.!!Applicants!need!to!be!able!to!withstand!being!outside!in!hot!or!cold!environments!and!demonstrate!extended!physical!activity.!
Focus:!It! is! important!that!members!stay!fully!engaged!and!focused!during!rehearsal.! !Also,!make!sure!to!use!your!breaks!wisely.! ! It’s!ok!to! let!your!mind!and!body!relax!during!break!time!(That’s!what!they!are!for),!yet!members!need!to!be!able!to!“turn!it!on”!for!an!extended!period!of!time!when!the!breaks!are!over.!!
Standby:! ! Standby!will! always! occur! during! any! ensemble! situation.! ! The! hand!will! remain! in! a!relaxed!position!(this!will!be!defined!when!the!line!is!set)!while!your!mind!is!focused!on!what!the!staff!has!to!say.!!!
Set!Position:!This!is!a!fully!engaged!position.! !Your!body!will!be!in!a!position!that! is!required!for!the!performance!of!the!piece!that!is!about!to!be!rehearsed.!
All! Battery! Members! should! know! all! 26! traditional! Percussive! Arts! Society! Rudiments.! ! Cast!members!should!also!be!able!to!sightWread!music.!!Reading!music!is!essential.!
Feet!Position,!Mark!Time!and!Sticks!Out!
1. Feet!at!the!45W!Our!default!set!position!for!the!feet!will!be!at!a!45Wdegree!angle.!!With!the!heels!almost!touching,!leave!the!feet!at!45Wdegree!angle!from!each!other.!!!
2. Mark!TimeW!slightly!pick!the!entire!foot!of!the!ground.!!Feet!should!remain!at!the!45.!!Make!sure!your!FEEL!THE!PULSE!IN!YOUR!FEET!!!Make!sure!you!can!Mark!Time!to!all!exercises!at!multiple!tempos.!
3. Sticks!will!almost!always!come!out!on!count!three!before!the!attack!of!the!exercise.!!Sticks!will!always!come!in!on!the!count!after!the!release.!
4. ALWAYS!keep!your!shoulders!and!arms!relaxed!as!possible.!5. Act!as!if!someone!is!always!watching!you.!
Accents!and!Taps!
Accents:!are!notes!with!a!dynamic!greater!than!mf!(6’’).!!Accents!will!always!require!a!large!amount!of!velocity.! !Velocity!can!be!defined!as!the!force!and!speed!of!the!down!stroke.! !Remember!to!not!squeeze! the! stick! after! an! accented! note! strikes! the! drum.! Always,! use! the!momentum! from! the!down!stroke!(aka!Rebound)!to!carry!the!stick!to!its!next!dynamic!position.!!It!is!important!to!NOT!CHOKE!OFF!THE!SOUND!OF!THE!STICK!after!accented!notes.!
Taps:!Taps!are!typically!defines!as!strokes!less!than!a!mf#(6’’).!!Make!sure!to!rebound!the!stick!even!at!these!levels.!!This!is!typically!the!hardest!part!of!marching!percussion!to!master.!!“Everyone!can!play!loud!and!high”.!!!Spend!lots!of!time!playing!and!practicing!your!taps.!!Once!again,!make!sure!to!not!choke!off!the!stick.!

Practicing!
It! is! important! to! practice! a! considerable! amount,! however! practicing! poorly! makes! for! inWefficient!practice.!!You!can!spend!hundreds!or!thousands!of!hours!practicing!and!it!not!make!the!difference!in!your!playing!because!the!time!used!for!practicing!was!conducted!poorly.!!!
Rules!for!practice:!
1. Always!use!a!metronome!when!learning.!!!They!are!fairly!affordable!and!also!free!on!the!internet.!
2. Learn!the!basics!first!!!You!will!find!that!there!are!some!difficult!exercises!in!our!packet.!!You!must!make!sure!to!learn!to!play!the!easier!exercises!before!attempting!to!play!the!more!difficult!material.!
3. When!learning!difficult!material,!SLOW!IT!DOWN!!!!This!it!typically!done!between!tempos!at!50W80bpm.!!If!you!notice!that!you!keep!making!the!same!mistake!in!a!passage,!slow!it!down!4W5!clicks!until!you!can!play!it!3!times!correctly!without!error.!
4. Please!do!your!best!to!memorize!repertoire!that!is!given!to!you.!5. Have!the!music!organized!in!a!folder!!6. Bass!drums!need!to!always!highlight!their!music!once!they!have!been!designated!to!a!
specific!part/drum.!
Instruments!
Coastal!Surge!will!provide!you!with!instruments!during!the!competitive!season.!!However,!you!will!need!to!bring!at!least!one!of!the!instruments!you!are!trying!out!on!to!the!first!camp.! !It! is!difficult! for!us! to!provide!enough! instruments!with! so!many!people! trying!our!at!once.! !Once!you! have! been! given! a! contract! we! will! inform! you! of! when! you! can! stop! brining! your!instruments.!

1. Right!Hand!Grip:!o Wrap!all!fingers!comfortably!around!the!stick.!!Do!not!over!squeeze!!!o Keep!the!thumb!opposite!of!the!index!finger.!!Make!a!T!using!the!index!finger!as!the!
top!of!the!T!and!the!thumb!being!the!vertical!part!of!the!T.!(Fig.#A#Next#page)!o Notice!that!there!are!three!fleshly!parts!to!your!index!finger,!the!middle!section!will!
make!the!top!horizontal!part!of!the!T.!o The!palm!will!have!a!slight!degree!up!from!being!flat.!!Not!German!grip!and!not!
