All you need is a college email address to join!
An online site/directory/community/network
Can be used as a verb – adding someone to your list of “friends,” looking someone up is called “Facebook-ing”
A great way to meet and keep in touch with people!
Making Friends
Joining Groups
Advertising Events
Public and Private Messaging (Wall vs. Message)
“Poking”
Sharing pictures
Mainly, allowing people to get to know you
Everything you post is immediately viewable by 17000 people… before you count DC faculty and staff
Identity Theft
It can be used as evidence for Judicial Hearings
Employers might see it
It might misrepresent you or worse…
YOUR PARENTS
MIGHT SEE IT!!!

If a complaint is brought to our attention by a member of the Diversity College (DC) community, the college reserves the right to hold a hearing utilizing evidence found on Facebook.com and/or any other online community to which DC’s constituents have access.
Harassment inappropriate/unwelcome messages of sexual and/or threatening nature
Evidence of vandalism of university property (pictures)
Evidence of underage consumption
Confessions of academic dishonesty
Any other violation of the Student Code of Conduct
Links to other sites (MySpace, Livejournal, etc) providing any of the above
It can be addicting
Impersonal compared to face-to-face interaction
Leads to “stalking”
Blurs reality – are you really the person you present online?
Limit the amount of time you spend on Facebook
Don’t put anything out there you don’t want used against you
Be aware of the “mission” of the groups you join
Only poke/friend/“wall” people you already know
Be selective about your Facebook picture
Facebook chain mail is more annoying than email chain mail.
Remember to take the Online Community Tutorial. It will be the first page when you attempt to access your Diversity-Net account. Completion with a score of 80% or higher required to complete Diversity-Net registration.
