Steps to the Scientific Method

Scientific Method Steps:At the conclusion of our time together, you should be able to:

1. List the 6 steps of the scientific method2. Define each of these steps

Define the Problem

Must know exactly what the problem is you are trying to solve

For Example:How do I get down???

Collect Background Information

What do I know? What do I need to know?

Formulate A Hypothesis

A possible solution to the problem Simple is usually better Can be a guess

Confucius Says:

There are two excellent theories for arguing with women.

Neither one works!!

Test the Hypothesis

Perform an experiment Compare outcome with hypothesis

Make and Record Observations

Collect data Take notes Record in an orderly fashion

Draw Conclusions

Evaluate what was found If it worked – GREAT If it didn’t – Start Over

Scientific Method Steps:Let’s see if you can:

1. List the 6 steps of the scientific method2. Define each of these steps

How do I get out of here???

Scientific Method Terms

Things you need to know

Scientific Method Terms:At the conclusion of our time together, you should be able to:

1. List the 5 terms of the scientific method and define each term.

2. Give an example of each term.

Observation

Statement of fact Obtained by using one of the 5 senses Qualitative / Quantitative

Typically not a Number /

Typically a Number

Inference

Attempts to make one think In the form of a question

Examples of Inferences

The Scientific Methodbegins with

Questions about the World Around You.

Ever Wonder Why?...

there are interstate highways in Hawaii?

The Scientific Methodbegins with

Questions about the World Around You.

Ever Wonder Why?...

a shipment is transported by car and cargo is transported by ship?

Hypothesis

An explanation that can be tested A prediction based on observation Can be an initial educated guess

Design a Hypothesis

Design a Hypothesis

Theory

Explanation of related observations Verified by multiple researchers Proven within reasonable doubt over a period of

time Typically answers the question: Why? And can

be fairly complex.

Dark Sucker Theory

Dark Sucker Theory

Law

Based on hypothesis that can be tested Proven to be true repeatedly over a period of time Can normally be explained in a mathematical

formula Typically answers the question: How? And is

usually not very complex.

Theory vs. Law

Proving that ivory soap floats Proving a person is guilty of murder

Scientific Method Terms:Let’s see if you :

1. List the 5 terms of the scientific method and define each term.

2. Give an example of each term.
