DEFINITION

Mathematical statistics is using probability theory, algebra and analysis to determine a set of data.

HISTORY The first known use of statistics goes back to

the 5th century BC. A book, written by Al-Kindi shows how to use statistics and analysis to translate scrambled messages.

The first use for mathematical purposes were used for the probability theory laid created by Blaise Pascal and Pierre de Fermat. Probability theory started up from the games of chance and with the creation of computers new methods have been born that are impossible to perform manually.

WHY STATS ARE IMPORTANT

I think its important because it's a way of getting the best options based on using results. For example diet product A, would result in side effects with 10% of the people using it. Diet product B, used to solve the same problem, would only have people suffering from side effects in 2% of the cases. Which one would you like to use if you were a patient for a diet product?

The dietician should know which one's safest and he'll need stats of data to know which one is safest for his patients.

WHY I LIKE STATISTICS I'm big into many sports, golf, hockey,

powerlifting and sledding e.t.c. Almost every type of sport uses numbers and data to determine stats to make predictions and show skill from a mathematical perspective.

For hockey, there is many stats including plus/minus, goals against, goals for, e.t.c. Plus/minus is measured by what kinds of goals you are on for, when your team scores, you get a positive point (1), if you are on the ice when your team is scored against, you obtain a negative point (-1). Sports analysis keep track of these stats and can determine if this player is good, bad, and the chances of that team scoring when that player is on the ice.
