Q. What is your address?
A. 230 Westwood Drive, Mankato, Minnesota, 56001.
Q. What is your phone number?

TIMOTHY McGOWAN - EXAMINATION BY MR. QUESTIONER 5
A. I can never remember. Just call the previous
number, and if I don't answer, press zero to get me
on my cell phone.
You didn't ask, but I have a toll-free
number and a fax as well.
Q. What is your fax number?
A. 507-344-2126. And the toll-free number is
866-452-7002. If I don’t answer that, zero gets my
cell from there too.
Q. Did you graduate from high school?
A. Yes; I went to Loyola High School in Mankato and
graduated in the early '80s.
Q. Any college?
A. Three years. I went to St. Mary's College in
Winona, Minnesota, right after high school. I
needed about a half a year's credits to graduate,
but I left when I couldn't afford school anymore.
Q. Okay. Any other education?
A. After a few years, I went to what was then known as
Rasmussen Business College in Minnetonka,
Minnesota -- or it might have had a Plymouth
address. It was across Highway 12 from Ridgedale.
Q. Did you graduate?
A. Yes, with an associate in applied science degree in
court reporting. I graduated in the early '90s.

TIMOTHY McGOWAN - EXAMINATION BY MR. QUESTIONER 6
Apart from years of self-guided studies
in grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, and
usage, that's all my education. Well, and I've
learned a lot about personal computers since
getting out of school too. Friends call me Tim's
Tech Support --
MR. SHIELD: I think you've answered him.
BY MR. QUESTIONER:
Q. Well, now, you're a court reporter, aren't you?
A. Yeah, since 1993. I organized as McGowan
Reporting, LLC, in 2003.
Q. Where have you practiced?
A. Minnesota, mostly in the Twin Cities and, of
course, now in Mankato since the fall of 2006.
Q. What services do you offer?
A. I report depositions, arbitrations, and statements
under oath -- you know, the usual.
I offer a few unique services. I scan
any exhibits and put them in a PDF file with the
transcript. The PDF file includes bookmarks, also
known as outlines. These are links which appear in
a pane on the left side of the document, and they
take the reader to the index, examination,
exhibits, and other important sections of the
transcript. It's handy, I think, having the index

always available.
Because scans of exhibits are pictures,
really, and not searchable text, I use OCR software
to lay an invisible layer of the text over the
scanned exhibit. When you search for something in
the PDF file, you'll look through both the
transcript and the exhibits. Of course, a
bad-looking exhibit can yield poor OCR results: A
fax of a fax of a fax usually spells
disappointment.
Oh, and I also offer transcripts in
native Word and WordPerfect format, not the clunky
conversions from ASCII that I've seen elsewhere.
Adobe Acrobat 8 introduced the concept of
portfolios, and I make use of the feature. All of
the foregoing files get placed into a portfolio, so
you only need download a single file to obtain all
of the files.
A final feature I offer: encryption. My
laptop hard drive is encrypted in its entirety.
The thumb drives I use for backup are encrypted.
All backups I make are encrypted. If your client's
confidential data is found anywhere it doesn't
belong, it didn't come from me.
MR. QUESTIONER: I'm going to ask the

BY MR. QUESTIONER:
Q. What is this?
A. It's a calendar for 2011.
Q. And on the back you have calendars for 2008, 2009,
2010, and 2012?
A. Yes.
Q. And is this a document you've created?
A. Yeah, it is. It's just a WordPerfect table, you
know. Well, five tables, if you want to get
technical.
Q. And your logo is a shamrock, I see. How very Irish
of you.
MR. SHIELD: Objection --
THE WITNESS: Sorry; no. It's a clover.
The graphic file I adapted called it a shamrock,
but it's really a four-leaf clover.
MR. QUESTIONER: Oh. Learned something.
THE WITNESS: My dad taught me that one.
MR. QUESTIONER: Well, I guess that's all
I had to ask about that, then.

A. It's the St. Patrick's Day card I send out.
Q. Is this another document you've created?
A. Yep. In WordPerfect.
I'm hoping to come up with some new text
this year, but the well's run dry for the moment.
Q. What's the deal with the leprechaun?
A. Besides what's in the fine print on the back?
Q. Oh. (Reviewing document.) Guess that answers that
question, in a really indirect way.
A. There's a more prosaic version of that on my Web
site.
Q. Got it. What I still don't have, though, is a copy
of your resume.
A. I left it at home, right by the door, where I'd be
sure not to miss it on my way here. Obviously,
that's not working out for me too well.
Q. Can you get a copy of that to your attorney so he
can send it to me?
A. Absolutely.
(Document request.)
MR. QUESTIONER: I guess that's really
all I needed to get on the record. Just try to get
that to me sometime next week, if you can.
MR. SHIELD: One point of clarification,
I think, is in order.

BY MR. SHIELD:
Q. You mentioned you have a Web site.
What's the address?
A. McGowanReporting.com.
Q. Do you have an e-mail address?
A. Yeah; it's Admin@McGowanReporting.com.
(Exhibit 3 marked.)
BY MR. SHIELD:
Q. Is this a printout of your Web site's home page?
A. That's right. As it existed on that date.
Q. I've used that link on your Web site to send e-mail
to you, and it points to a different address.
A. Yes, and that one works just fine too. I was
trying to keep the address from being harvested by
spam bots, but I think that cat's long since out of
the bag.
Q. Oh, I see.
MR. SHIELD: That's all I have.
MR. QUESTIONER: I'm good.
MR. SHIELD: This was short, but I always
advise reading and signing, so that's what we'll
do.

A brief bio of our cover model:
Seamus. the McGowan family leprechaun. was first glimpsed dancing a jig in a dove!" patch on a small farm in southem Minnesota. Bridget. the oldest girl in the family. drew an expert likeness of him, and he's been frequently seen there eve.- since.
Uke many of the Irish, his age is tough to determine. We do know that Seamus adopted the McGowans in the mid '70s. becoming more visible by turns. Speculatioo abounds regarding his shenanigans ere his discovery 00 these shores.
Seamus took up residence 00 the bam. soon assuming the day job of directing traffic to the family raspbeny patdl. 00 weekends he would often be found hawking sweet clover honey. Realizing Seamus was overwori<ed, his best mate .,sisted on accOlTlpaflying him 00 the home-brew promotion tour. Nowadays. if you watch closely, you might catdl sight of him kicking up his heels at revelries around Mankato, Minnesota.
Seamus has imprinted so deeply upon the family that most of the boys raised under his charms now beM his likeness as an artificial birthmark.. His favorite colors are honey gold and raspberry red -- but he'n not say nay to a black-and-tan!
A wee point of protocol: Please refer to Seamus and his kind as leprechauns or wee folk: call him a midget and you might get a shillelagh upside the - well upside the Ialee, I guess.
Seamus still keeps his pot of gold well hidden, but he's very generous with a laugh and a helping hand. If you meet him. be sure to say hi. and bear in mind that his name is pronounced shay.muss. not see-muss.
