The Starry Night Gala will be an evening of twinkling stars and expressions of gratitude to Glen and Sherri Heller and the law offices of Drake Loeb PLLC, for their years of support and dedication to Hospice.
Glen Heller first became associated with Hospice as our attorney in 1988 when the organization became incorporated and soon after became a member of the Board of Directors. From 1997-1999 Glen served as Chairman of the Board and in recent years has held the position as Treasurer. Glen’s love for golf is evident, as he has faithfully chaired the Golf Committee for our annual Golf Classic since its inception many years ago. Sherri has been supportive of her husband’s commitment to the organization and she herself has served on past Hospice Gala Committees and the Auxiliary. Glen and Sherri have personally supported Hospice through their personal commitment to the building
of the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence and through the Circle of Life.
Drake Loeb PLLC’s history with Hospice includes Mrs. Margaret Drake and Mrs. Ann Loeb serving as Board Members from the early years. The patronage of the firm continued with support of our organization through events, fundraisers and the building of the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence. To this day, Drake Loeb, PLLC continues steadfast support through the Circle of Life.

He completed 5 years of clinical pastoral education while interning at major New York Hospitals including New York Presbyterian and Beth Israel. He did his graduate studies in Pastoral Care and Counseling at the New York Theological Seminary.
Gary eventually became a part time chaplain for Hospice leading to his current position as Director of Spiritual Care and Volunteer Services. He continues to work in New York City with S A G E (Senior Advocacy for Gay Elders) where he teaches meditation, leads bereavement groups and provides counseling to the community. Gary lives in Mountainville, NY with his daughter Jordan and partner Sabine.

“I have found that even under the most difficult conditions- or the most joyous - there is always the possibility for loving action. Ultimately, this is what heals our patients, their families and ourselves.”

During this time of dramatic change in health care there is much to report to you regarding the state of Hospice. We continue to increase services to those in need of end of life care and after care to their loved ones across Orange and Sullivan Counties.
In 2014, Hospice staff and volunteers provided care and support to more than 1,153 patients and their families and registered 45,882 days of care to patients in homes, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence. Going into the 2015, we have 140 staff members and 150 volunteers who assist this organization on a daily basis to help ensure care, comfort and compassion to those going through the most difficult time in life.
In this day and age of government cutbacks and corporate downsizing, non-profit healthcare entities are expected to provide high quality programs that are proven to be cost saving for Medicare and other providers of health care coverage, Hospice being at the forefront of these cost savings.
We are grateful for the support and generosity of the community that enables us to meet the challenge to keep our mission of providing care for our terminally ill patients in the best possible setting and the bereavement support for both adults and children. We could never accomplish this without it.
As we begin a new year, we ask that you tell others, either friends or loved ones of our special care and services and or consider a donation. No matter the size of your gift, you can help us to serve the families and patients who need us today and in years to come.
Thank you.

“Thank you for making it possible for the captain of our family to be with his loved ones during the hardest months of his life.”
On behalf of my family, I would like to thank Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties for making it possible for the captain of our family to be with his loved ones during the hardest months of his life.
Pop and his bride chose together how to deal with the crappy diagnosis of colon cancer in May of 2014. Our family loved Pop, and honored his choice. Pop had the love of his bride, and his amazing children/spouses, his 9 proud grandchildren, his brother in law and his brother by his side for the summer of 2014. We continued to laugh, watch the history channel, drink coffee and drink warm beer with Pop until his last day. He even hit his lotto numbers three times in one week this summer! He was able to wish his grandson Joey, and his fiancé Tori well wishes for their wedding day, and was able to watch the ceremony via video.
We always updated Gram and Pop on family events, but this summer Pop got daily visits from his family and loved hearing what the kids were all up too. He heard how well Nick and Jules were doing in sports, how Jacob’s driving skills were coming along, what concerts Michelle and Scott were going to, how Victoria and Joey arrived home safe from their honeymoon, what picture Carlina was drawing that day, and how much Claire was enjoying Spain. He even got visits from his grandchildren’s dogs! He spent his days with his kids and their spouses making new memories, being silly and having funon the back porch and enjoyed time spent with his
brother-in-law Andrew, and his brother Mario. He still got to have his morning coffee with his bride, and if you knew Pop he never went anywhere without his bride!
His nurse advised the family to prepare for his final day. He held on for the love his family this past summer. He spent many priceless memories with visitors and loved when everyone was together.
Without the support of Pop’s team from Hospice of Orange and Sullivan, none of this would have been made possible. Pop really loved his team of staff members that aided him and loved each day he spent with his family.
Hospice wouldn’t be made possible without donations. The Family of Michael Carbone would love to give back and thank Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc. for the love and support given to Pop and his family. Please support this cause, and wish granddaughter Michelle Becker luck in running her third half marathon to date, but the first for Celebration of Life, this time for the love of her Pop, and the amount of love he has given his entire family!
Michael Carbone and his loving family.
FOCUS on a Hospice Family…

TREE OF LIFEYOU DID IT and Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties is proud to tell you that we ended the year with a better than ever Tree of Life Event! With an Event Sponsor, Location and Tree Sponsors in Orange and Sullivan Counties,
and very generous donors, $48,000 was netted from the event to benefit Hospice and its programs. Of course, none of this is possible without the wonderful group of Hospice volunteers who man the tables countless hours at Adams Fairacre Farms and at the Galleria at Crystal Run. We are grateful to all.
Musical selections were provided at the tree lighting ceremony at Galleria Crystal Run by the SUNY Orange Choir and The Madrigal Singers, directed by Ron DeFesi. After Hours Quartet delighted all with their selections at the tree lighting at Adams Fairacre Farms.

Thank you hospice volunteer Maureen Giegel for combining your love for all things
“witches” and coming up with a great themed fundraiser for hospice. On October
24, 2014, a Witch Hat Party was held at the lovely Palaia Vineyard Winery and the
guests really showed off their creative side with the most interesting themed hats.
From birds, to feathers, leaves to lights and a few cobwebs and skulls, the hats
were interesting to say the least. Maureen did a great job with reaching out
to local businesses that donated gift cards and items to be raffled off as part
of gift baskets and she also had entertainment during the evening including a
belly dancer, tarot card reader and medium Armand Egidi for those interested
knowing the future. The event was successful in raising $2,000 for hospice.
With a little help from our friends…..
America’s hospice professionals are on a mission to learn how to serve Veterans through the challenges they may be facing from illness, isolation or traumatic life experience. The first step to providing quality end of life care to our nation’s Veterans is to learn more about their unique needs by becoming familiar with military culture. We here at Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties are proud to be a member of the We Honor Veterans program and of our staff who believe in the mission of caring and serving our veterans.
Hospice staff members attended the annual Hospice Veteran Partnership meeting on November 4, 2014 at the Castle Point VA, where they presented a case study to the Best Practices portion of the conference. Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc. is currently at a Level II in the program and seeking the next level.

On January 10, 2015, Lauren and Joshua decided to have a small wedding ceremony at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence with close family and friends. It was such a beautiful ceremony and a meaningful day that was able to be shared with her mom Suzanne, family, and friends.
On November 18, 2014, Suzanne was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, which had metastasized to her brain. A pillar of her community, Suzanne worked at Leptondale Elementary School as an office clerk and in the Wallkill Central School District for 22 years at various schools where she is loved, admired, and respected. “After finding out about my mother’s diagnosis, my family and I were shocked and heart broken, my mom is only 60 years old.”
During the next few weeks, her mom underwent 10 brain and 15 lung radiation treatments. During that time, friends and family took her to treatments and she was able to stay at home due to the support of family and friends. She lost her hair but got through the challenge with scarves and hats.
My sister, my brothers, and I had to face the difficult decision whether to proceed with chemotherapy or not. At the time, mom was not well mentally or physically, and my sister, brothers, and I contemplated for days on this decision and prayed for guidance. We talked to my uncles and aunts and other family members to make the best decision as my mom was struggling to become stable in her mental state. At the time, she was staying at St. Francis Hospital due to complications from the medicines. With research, consultations with doctors, discussion within the family and a lot of prayer, we decided that the quality of her life was much more valuable to her and us, and so we decided on hospice care. Suzanne moved to
the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence on December 23. 2014.
“The ceremony was held in the meditation room that had the beauty of the sun spilling in as my now husband and I exchanged our vows with my mom, his mom and dad, and close family and friends witnessing”, said Lauren. “If it had not been for the amazing staff at Kaplan, we would not have been able to give my mother, and all of us, the experience and memories that we will have forever”.
