STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT:
“Everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:33
When we first hear this statement, it seems that Jesus is making an unrealistic demand upon us. How can we renounce all of our possessions? We need them to live. However, what we must renounce is the belief that they belong to us. Everything that we have belongs to God alone. All of our resources are entrusted to us not only for our own use, but also so that we can help others. Once we renounce the idea that we possess or are entitled to anything, it is much easier to share the many gifts that God has given us. Then we truly are His Disciples.

St. Paul School Students have a focus on the theme of Agriculture this year. We enjoy a hands-on experience of agriculture they attended the Canfield Fair together on Friday, August 30. I felt particularly blessed to share the time with the students, faculty, chaperones and Mr. Pancurak. Everyone had fun. God bless all those who work in the area of agriculture. Our transition to a new Sunday Mass Schedule at the beginning of October might stir up feelings of anxiety, fear, risk and adventure. Nevertheless, we pray that God will help us persevere in our faith here in Columbiana County. The changes we face may very well interfere with our established routines on Sunday mornings. I hope and pray that we will approach the upcoming changes with open hearts and trust in God. I am particularly reminded of Thomas Merton’s prayer, “Thoughts in Solitude,” which is accessible at various websites. It begins, “My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.” It concludes, “…you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.” Our new Sunday Mass Schedule will give us more opportunities for collaboration between Catholics of both Leetonia and Salem. God bless us as we strive to adjust in a changing world.
With love, prayers, and gratitude,
Father Bob Edwards
Father Bob’s Corner .
Dear Friends,
In ev’ry age, O Lord, you have been our refuge. - Psalm 90:1 As we pray using the above verse for our psalm refrain today, we add our voices to all those who have gone before us and have sought the Lord in time of need. God is our refuge. We can assuredly say with the Peter and the Apostles, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of everlasting life.” (John 6:68.) The Lord appreciates our search and ultimate discovery that God is the One our souls truly desire. This coming Saturday (September 14) is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. We might think of finding our refuge in God who, is all powerful and reigns gloriously as Lord of all creation; yet we can also seek our refuge in the Lord who has suffered on the Cross. The Cross, many saints say, is where we can discover many spiritual treasures and deepening of love. Holy God, help us to learn the “science of the Cross.”

“Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.” Our call to discipleship calls for a full self surrender. The reward is always much
greater than the surrender. Are you called to surrender your life as a deacon, in the religious life or as a priest? To help in your discernment call Fr. Christopher Luoni at (330) 744-8451 or by email: cluoni@youngstowndiocese.org.

Wednesday marks the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, that killed 2,977 people in New York, the Pentagon and in a field in rural
Pennsylvania. The attacks and the reaction to them have shaped U.S. policy for more than 15 years, leaving a nation that is far more vigilant and jittery about terrorism. Remembering the fateful events of
September 11, 2001, may we resolve to put aside our differences and join together in the task of continuing to renew our nation and world. Let us pray for God’s light and guidance as we confront such terrible events. Grant comfort & console those whose lives were spared & pray for those who lives were lost.
