SVdP News From“RuleoftheSocietyofSt.VincentdePaul”1.5“Vincentiansstrivetoseekoutand indthoseinneedandtheforgotten,thevictimsofexclusionoradversity.”Thankstotechnologythoseinneed induswithaphonecall.425-355-3504isavolunteermannedcallcenterthatisthe irststeptoindinghelp.ThoseinneedmayalreadyknowofthehelpSVdPprovides,ortheymayhavegottenthenumberbydialing211,orfromanotheragencythatprovideshelp.Thecallcentervolunteerssendthedetailstotheappropriateparish'sSVdPmembersbasedonparishboundaries.HereatSt.MaryoftheValleywehelppeopleinneedinMonroe,partsofSnohomish,Sultan,GoldBar,Index,Skykomish,andBaring.Thispastweekwehadrequestsforassistancefrom14people.Wehave4teamsoftwopeopleeach.Eachteamisresponsibleforaspeci icarea.ThreewomenI'vehelpedrecentlystandoutbecauseofthedifferencesintheirsituation.Onewasamotherwithsixchildren,livinginamotorhomeattheEvergreenFairgrounds.Shewasaskingforpropaneandclothesforherchildren.ThedayIvisitedthemwasthelasttheyhadattheFairgroundsandwereplanningon indingaplacetheycouldparkforfreeatalake.ShehasahousingvoucherfromtheState,buthasn'tfoundaplace,availablethatwouldacceptit.AnotherwomanIhelpedwascompletelyhomeless(notent,nocar,nocouchsur ing)andcarryingallherstuffinabackpack.Shewascon identthathercurrentsituationwastemporaryandwasaskingforhelptopayherstorageunitthathadfamilymemorabiliaandsentimentalstuff.Thethirdwomanwasusetoasixdigitincome,butwasun-employedandherbene itshadrunout.Shehadajoblinedupthatwouldsooncoverherusualexpenses.Shewasaskingforhelpwithherwaterbill.Povertyisnotsimple.Thereismorethanonepatternofpoverty.Thosewholivewithlesshavedevelopedskillsandexpectationsthathelpthemcope,butalsomakeithardertochangetheirsituations.Frommyexperience,thepeopleinneedwhoaresuddenlyinneedduetoillnessorlossofjobstrugglethemostwiththechangestheyface,butalsohaveagreaterchanceofchangingtheirsituation.Rule1.10Promotionofself-suf iciency:Vincentiansendeavortohelpthepoortohelpthemselveswheneverpossible,andtobeawarethattheycanforgeandchangetheirowndestinies...╀ September 28, St Vincent de Paul meeting at 7:00pm at the
