St. Mary’s Parish Mission Statement:
We are a Catholic community of believers, rich in tradition and growing in diversity. We provide a barrier free environment in which parishioners of all ages and cultures share the same faith, theology, sacramental and liturgical celebrations, instruction and other social and spiritual events. 2020 ST. STEPHEN PARISH MISSION
JESSE ROMERO
Jesse is a bilingual Catholic Lay Evangelist, who is nationally ac-claimed for his dynamic, upbeat Christ centered preaching. His
preaching apostolate is "On Fire Evangeliza-tion." During his years as a Deputy Sheriff in Los Angles, CA, Jesse experienced the dark side of society, which he explains in his new book: “The Devil in the City of Angels: My Encounters with the Diabolical.” He is a husband, father and grandfather. He was a three time World Police boxing champion and a two time U.S.A. Kickbox-ing champion. He has degrees in Theology from Mount St Mary’s University in L.A. and Franciscan Uni-versity in Steubenville, Ohio. Jesse has been on Catholic radio for over 15 years now. Currently on virginmostpowerfulradio.org hosting “The Terry and Jesse Show,” & “Jesus 911.” Jesse is also a host on a Spanish network show Enfamilia Radio” in Phoenix, Arizona. He has preached in well over 1,000 Catho-lic Churches in the last couple of year with en-ergy and conviction. He says: “I am a straight shooter; I shoot straight for the heart. I have conviction, passion and I give straight talk, no-nonsense, no-spin, bluecollar, bible-centered, Holy Spirit fire brand Catholicism.” He will con-duct a Parish Mission at St. Stephen Church, 1300 NE J Street, in Bentonville, AR on Monday, Feb. 17, 2020, in English at 7:00 pm and on Tues-day, Feb 18, 2020 at 7:00 pm in Spanish.

II Sunday in the Ordinary Time On the cusp of fame, power, or influence, would you turn it down? Today’s Gospel again features John the Baptist. Contro-versial but popular, John has gathered quite a group of followers. He has disci-ples. People come from near and far to be baptized by him. Pharisees and gov-ernment leaders are drawn to his preach-ing. If John was another man, a lesser man, he would have claimed his own greatness. Instead, John the Baptist is a witness to humility. “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Behold the Lamb of God … he is the one of whom I said, “A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me.”… the reason why I came baptiz-ing with water was that he might be made known.’” Rather than point to himself, John points to Christ. John could have grasped at what he had accumulated. He could have seen Jesus as a Messianic competitor. Instead, John knows who he is. He knows his place as forerunner. Be-cause John knows who Jesus is. “I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.” A life of humility, a life for others, can be challenging to live. So much of our culture is built around achievement and individualism. We can justify it, too, in pur-suit of “greater goods” and higher ideals. In the process, however, we might miss our own participation in the kingdom of God. John, for all of his humility, was not an af-terthought. In another Gospel passage, Jesus calls him “the greatest prophet,” even the greatest of men. Why? Because he fulfills the mission given to him by God: to announce the coming of the Messiah. We too are prophets and forerunners. Our witness to the Gospel is meant to point people to Jesus. Consider your own mis-sion this week. To whom are you called to announce the good news of the Son of God?
