Fr. Gerard
Dear parishioners, visitors, guests and benefactors— This weekend begins a new liturgical year and a new liturgi-cal season. We now begin the season of Advent. Advent is the four weeks of preparation time for Christmas. There will be some notable changes; using the color purple, no Gloria and some different songs played at Mass. Let us make the most out of the four weeks of Advent. This week St. Joseph Parish hosts the blood drive. Many people from St. Joseph Parish welcome many non-Catholics to our parish facility. Your example of hospitality is greatly appre-ciated. The support for the blood drive in any way is greatly appreciated. This coming Saturday, December 8, is the Feast of the Im-maculate Conception. It is a Holy Day of Obligation for Catho-lics. Please consult the bulletin for the extra masses offered for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The Feast states that the Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin. Mary continues to be our spiritual intercessor. The women’s retreat is also held on Saturday, December 8. It is wonderful to take a few hours off of our busy and routine lives to discover more deeply how God is speaking to our hearts. I encourage as many women as possible to attend the retreat. I also pray for its success and the power of the Holy Spirit to touch hearts on the retreat. Also, next weekend after all of the Masses in Hayward, one can be installed in the scapular. The scapular is a sacramen-tal in the Catholic Church. I consider a sacramental as holy things that point toward God. The scapular was given to St. Simon Stock by the Blessed Mother. The Blessed Mother promises a special protection for those who wear the scapular. It is not magic, but a way of deepening our relationship with Jesus and the Blessed Mother. May God, through the interces-sion of the Blessed Virgin Mary, protect and bless all who will be installed with the scapular. As ever—

EVENTS/HAPPENINGS:
Enrollment in the Brown Scapular – Dec. 8 & 9 APPROVAL FROM THE VATICAN: To be eligible for the Scapular promise, which is a sign of Consecration to Mary and hence to God, it is necessary for the wearer to have observed the virtue of chastity according to their state in life whether married or single, and to have complied with the spirit of inner devotion which the wearer of the Scapular implies. A whole series of popes, including more recent popes, have, by virtue of their unique position of authority, approved the Scapular devotion; and so, it is not something which has lost its power, even if it may have become unfashionable in some circles. Enrollment will be held after all Masses the weekend of Dec. 8 & 9. Sign up by the Parish office.
Elizabeth Ministry Christmas Project Beginning the 1st Sunday of Advent through Epiphany Sunday, January 6. Elizabeth Ministry is asking for donations of new-born size only diapers and baby wipes which will be used in the gift bags for our hospital ministry. There will be two baby bassi-nets set up by the entrances where you will be able to leave your gifts. Thank you as always for your generosity.
Blood Drive St. Joseph Parish will be hosting the American Red Cross Blood Drive on December 6th and 7th. If you would like to volunteer on either day greeting and registering donors, help in the kitchen serving our guests refreshments, or donate cookies, please contact Tena Shamro at 715-634-3132.
Giving Tree The Giving Tree is up in the entrance to the church. Please return your gift unwrapped by Thursday, December 13. If you are unable to shop but would like to give a donation to the giv-ing tree, please drop it off at the parish office. We will also need wrapping paper, large gift bags and large (coat sized) boxes. Thank you for helping those in need!
