In Today’s First Reading, the prophet Ezekiel tells us how he was called by God:
“As the Lord spoke to me, the spirit entered me and set me on my feet, and I heard the one who was speaking to me...” Yes, he heard what God was asking of him. God knew He was not giving Ezekiel an easy task, but that is part of what being called by the Lord sometimes involves.
Being called is something to which we often make reference, as each of us is called in Baptism. God does not forsake us when we are called, just as He did not abandon Ezekiel. He is with us through the Holy Spirit, to strengthen us and assist us. We must allow the Lord to help us. At the same time, we must strive to be disciples of the Lord. We are called to spread the light of the gospel in everything we do.

The OUTREACH MINISTRIES at St. Francis of Assisi serve our greater community with spiritual and physical
comfort. Disciples serving in these ministries truly spread the light of the gospel through their work. Activities range from knitting blankets to preparing care packages to fixing a meal for someone in need. If you can help, please contact the ministry leaders directly. And, monetary contributions are always welcome! Blanket Healing Ministry Knits blankets which are blessed by Father Bill and given to the sick. Human Dignity and Human Decency By Bishop Randolph Calvo
The key words to the pro-life stance of the Catholic Church are sanctity of human life, respect, and human
dignity. They express our belief that every human being is created in the “image and likeness of God” and our
obligation to respect the life and dignity of the human person, from conception to natural death. There are many
ways we respect human life; one that is indispensable is human decency: how we treat one another. “Do unto
others whatever you would have them do to you,” (Mt. 7:12) is the Golden Rule. Decency is more a matter of
fairness than compassion. It is our conduct towards one another in word and deed that refrains from inflicting
unnecessary harm. This is not political correctness but behavior basic to the well-being of society. The lack of human decency degrades human dignity, erodes moral sensibility and tears apart the social fabric.
Events in our nation raise concerns about our standard of decency. The separation of families on our southern
border is one example. This is not about politics; it is about children being taken away from their parents. This is
not simply about law enforcement, for the standard of human decency applies to all who are detained, arrested or
incarcerated. Decency demands assessing whether the trauma inflicted on a child by separation or the resulting
terror in a mother’s heart is commensurate with the transgression or even necessary. Did our government plan
ahead for the eventual reunion of families or, failing to do so, possibly render as orphans hundreds of children? To claim deterrence as the reason for separating children from parents is to use people as a means to an end, an
affront to human dignity. A human being is not a pawn to be manipulated by policy makers. A person cannot be
held hostage for the enforcement of law.
The people crossing our southern border cannot be lumped together as a bunch of drug traffickers, criminals or
undesirables. To do so would neither be fair nor honest. Many have traveled hundreds of miles in search of what
our nation’s founding fathers in the Declaration of Independence asserted as “certain inalienable rights” endowed
to people by their Creator, among which are “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” They seek asylum to keep their children and themselves out of harm’s way. They came because they believed in the United States as a
land that would give them refuge, opportunity to escape poverty, and liberty from the threat of violence. Many of
our forebears came to our country for these same reasons.
We are a fractured nation and our immigration policy is broken. Speech that disregards the standards of human
decency only deepens the divide and paralyzes our ability to fix things. We need civil discourse that allows for
disagreements; speech that respects the person holding opposing views. Only by according one another the
dignity each person deserves, can we work together to solve the problems facing our society. For the sake of our
nation, let us choose life, by respecting the God-given dignity of each person and treating one another with decency.

Notice of 2nd Collection for July 7-8, 2018 (THIS weekend)
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Our dioceses takes the Peter’s Pence Collection to support the Holy Father as he reaches out in mercy and
charity to people who are suffering. Your generosity will help Pope Francis ease the suffering of some of the most
marginalized throughout the world and show them the tender love of God.
Pope Francis challenges us to look at those around us with the eyes of mercy. He says, “We encounter so many
weary and oppressed people today...And how is our heart? Is it merciful? And our way of thinking and acting, is it
inclusive?” (Jubilee Audience, Nov. 12, 2016). I invite you to reflect on how you feel moved to answer the call to
mercy.
Please prayerfully consider supporting this collection as an act of mercy and charity. Join with our brothers and
sisters in faith from around the globe to help Pope Francis reach the most marginalized in our world. For more
information about the collection, please visit www.uscccb.org/peters-pence.
Thank you, and may God bless you abundantly.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo, Bishop of Reno

Toiletries Ministry
We received word from Matthew Vaughan of Catholic Charities of Northern
Nevada that they are in desperate need of items they distribute on a daily
basis. They are asking for our assistance in providing deodorant, shampoo, bar soap, toothpaste and brushes, adult wipes and baby wipes and size 4 diapers, and any other toiletries such as shaving items and feminine hygiene products. They are currently OUT of these toiletries!
If you can help with this ministry, please bring the items to the Gathering Area in the front entry of the church and place them in the basket provided. As you travel this
summer, remember to gather the unused amenities left in your hotel rooms and bring them to the church for the homeless and less fortunate in Northern Nevada. We take these items for granted in our daily personal hygiene but to many, they are a much needed but unavailable necessity.
God bless you for your continued support of this ministry. Denise Azzara

Synopsis: PAUL, APOSTLE OF CHRIST is the story of two men. Luke, as a friend
and physician, risks his life when he ventures into the city of Rome to visit Paul, who
is held captive in Nero’s darkest, bleakest prison cell. But Nero is determined to rid
Rome of Christians, and does not flinch from executing them in the grisliest ways
possible. Before Paul’s death sentence can be enacted, Luke resolves to write another
book, one that details the beginnings of “The Way” and the birth of what will come
to be known as the Church.
50th Anniversary of the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae To Love Is toWill the Good of Others (Humanae vitae no. 9)
“Married love is above all fully human, a compound of sense and spirit. It is not, then, merely a question of natural instinct or emotional drive. It is also, and above all, an act of the free will, whose trust is such that it is meant not only to survive the joys and sorrows of daily life, but also to grow, so that husband and wife become in a way one heart and one soul, and together attain their human fulfillment.”
