CCOOPPYYRRIIGGHHTTSS && LLIICCEENNCCEE SSMMFF PPRROO The SMF PRO extension for ArcGIS and its components are protected by the law on intellectual
property and the current laws on IT development. The use or distribution of this product or its
derivatives to third parties not having the license extension constitutes an illegal act of piracy and
fraud. Use of this product in activities of plagiarism of its functions is also considered as an illegal
activity. Anyone subjected to such acts is liable to prosecution.
The acquisition of a product license gives the purchaser a license of use and includes one year of
maintenance starting from the date of purchase. During the validity period of maintenance, this
service allows the user to receive product updates, support on the product and free product
activation on a single computer.
Rights to the source code and intellectual property of the product remain to Groupe Système Forêt
and are excluded from the order. This clause applies to the current version and all of those that
will be issued in the future.
Buying a product license allows installation on a single computer or server, depending on license
ordered. To move a license from one computer to another, the user must have a valid license for
the active maintenance and must uninstall the license from the former position. The user must then
uninstall the license from the old computer as only one installation is possible at the time. If the
user does not have a valid maintenance of the product and wants to reinstall it without reactivating
the maintenance, administration fees will apply.
Updates of the product are emailed to the user designated in the order. It is the responsibility of the
company or organization that controls the license to inform Groupe Système Forêt of the user’s
change so that it receives the new versions. The support will only be made on the most recent
version of the product and for the user identified in the license. The support on functions or
products other than those included in the extension is subject to consultation fees, even if there is
an active maintenance. Fixing product bugs will be made within a reasonable time, depending on
the capabilities of available technologies. Groupe Système Forêt undertakes no obligation for the
correction after the expiry of the validity of the maintenance.
The use of this license and its functions cannot hold Groupe Système Forêt responsible for the
breakage or loss of any digital equipment or data. The use of this product does not replace the
responsibility of the user to verify the results compliance. Groupe Système Forêt cannot be held
responsible for the invalidity of the results obtained by the product.
The product will be supported on the version of the platform it was released with. The support will
be included in the two previous versions of the most recent.

SMF Pro for ArcGIS is an extension allowing the import and the processing of files from GPS points
representing the movement of a vehicle.
The GPS in machinery must be programmed to take a geographical position at an interval of fixed and
predetermined time. These points can be taken with a Garmin GPS unit (marine series or GPX format)
or Truckbase (SLV format) or other to capture track. SMF Pro imports these files into a point layer in
Shapefile format.
The points are used to trace the paths (lines) of the machinery and to produce the treated areas
(polygons). Analysis functions (breaks, trails and productivity) produce quick and concrete results to
quickly understand the effectiveness of the forest machines. The main result allows the calculation of
the area useful for the billing of work performed; several tools show the results dynamically to
understand performance.
The evolution of the extension is always active and future releases will always contain new features
and improvements. These will be available via an active annual maintenance.
The SMF Pro extension is used with ArcGIS 9.3 or higher. The extension consists of a toolbar adding
in the graphic ArcGIS interface.

It is possible to evaluate the extension for a period of 14 days. In evaluation mode you will be able to
use personal data in order to evaluate the extensions. It is not possible to produce commercial results
with the trial version.
In evaluation mode, a license manager window appears
when using a function.
To evaluate the function, click on the "Evaluation"
button. This window will appear every time you reopen
the extension until 14 days end.

The SMF Pro extension is protected by a virtual key. Following the installation of the extension’s
components, it is necessary to register the extension by contacting Groupe Système Forêt (GSF) by
email (info@gsf.ca) or by phone (418) 903-5488.
A Unique Product Number of 12 digits will be generated
and is specific to the used computer and the hardware
components. It is necessary to provide the product number
that generates the GSF license number which also consists
of 12 digits.
This number must be entered in the window "About SMF-
Pro" from the "SMF Pro" menu.

SMF Pro includes three main functions (Import GPS file, Progress Report, Create Geometry from
Points) for processing GPS points from a Garmin Truckbase or other devices.
It also contains functions to analyze the productivity and the trails occupation as well as other features
to make specific treatment data and for configure the application.
The Import GPS Giles menu allows importing
GPS waypoints from a Garmin GPS system,
Truckbase, and others in a Shapefile format. It
is the first step to execute.
The Progess Report menu uses the raw data that have been imported by the Import GPS Files
function and contains parameters to calculate pause time, traction time and downtime. This
informations are assigned to each point. An activity report can be generated and it is possible to apply
a unique legend value to the point layer to identify issues considered Production, Traction, breaks
(Pause) and off.
The Create Geometry From Points menu requires the Activity Report to be run first. It constitutes
the third step to be done. It creates a layer of lines and polygons representing respectively the trails and
areas treated from points of one or more sets of measurements from different machines. This function
can create polygons manually (polygon by polygon).or automatically.
The Treatments update menu adds in the attributes of a polygon layer, the field corresponding to the
type of treatment from another polygon layer.
The Productivity Analysis generate a summary or detailed report for calculate the productivity of an
operator or a machine. It requires that the functions Progress Report and Create geometry from
points are carried out previously.

The Trails Occupation Analysis function
calculates the percentage of trails area created by
the machinery.
The Remove Overlap Points function group
several files from one machine in a single file.
The overlapping points with the same
geographical position are deleted.
La fonction « Reclassement de points selon une
fréquence d’enregistrement » menu (Point
Reclassification using recording frequency) must
be used when more than one machinery is found
in a block. It recreates the chronological order of
a machinery trace. It is based on GPS capture
time (12 or 150 seconds). This function prevents
going back and forth between both machinery
during the trail occupation analysis.
The Automated Processing function executes and processes the GPS points automatically. It includes
Import files, Activity Report, Create geometry from points and Productivity analysis functions. It
requires a defined structure of the nomenclature ADM files names.
The Area, Perimeter and Length Update function calculates the area, perimeter and length of the
layers by adding information in the attribute table.
The Preparing Data Card allows the user to prepare the fils that will be used for data capture in
Garmin 400, 500 and 700 marine GPS series. File names will have a define structure and it will be
possible to export them on the SD card.
The Operation Machine Management function identifies the specific characteristics of each machine
based on contractor. Management is necessary when Automated Processing function is used.
The Configuration function configures the field names for different layers generated by SMF Pro and
identifies a name or code for operators and machines.

The processing of the GPS points can be done in two ways either automatically or by performing each
step individually. The automatic method requires using a specific structure for the names of files and is
available only for a license server.
Stepwise method requires performing functions in a specific order while the automatic method will
perform these functions sequentially.
Import GPS files
Delete overlapping points (Only when layers of
GPS points were grouped and contain overlaps
points)
Progress Report (to calculate pause, stop and
pull)
Creating geometry from points (will create the
polygon layer and trails)
Subsequently, when these steps are performed, it is possible to generate reports for productivity
analysis and Trails occupation.

layer (treated area) and line (Path) from ADM files from Garmin marine 400, 500 and 700 series
models. It performs all of the same processing sequences by the step by step method.
However, its implementation requires a specific
structure for the ADM files names. It is
advisable to use the Preparing Data Card for
Garmin GPS function to daily or weekly
generate files for these device types.
Analysis of productivity and occupancy trails
calculation reports may be subsequently
generated.
The explanation of this feature is detailed in
Section 16 on page 87.

Automated Processing function requires a specific structure for the names of GPS files.
File names must be identified in the Contractor_Machine_IdentGPS form. The GPS identifier is
presented as a character as one of the following letters A, T, C, D corresponding respectively to Feller
bunchers, Carrier, Combos and Skidder.
It is recommended to use the "Preparing Data Card for Garmin GPS" function to structure data
collection for Garmin 400, 500 and 700 devices series. These devices store data in an ADM file
format. This function is detailed in Section 5 on page 21.

Some GPS devices such as Garmin 400 series models, while 500 and 700 require structuring and
preparation of daily files to simplify the management of data collection in the field. When saving a
layout, the selection of these files allow an approach that is more structured and rapid for the operator.
For these types of devices, the first step is to
prepare the daily files (ADM format) and transfer
them to the SD card from the Preparing Data
Card for Garmin GPS function.
It is possible to create multiple files by specifying
the structure and a GPS identifier as different
operators.
This procedure is not mandatory, but improves the
data processing and the obtaining of more detailed
analyzes of production.

The Type of analysis section contains the two Harvest and Site Preparation options. These options
are directly related to different parameters to calculate the time of break, traction and stop. The result is
stored in the attribute table layers.
The parameters specified in either of the options will be retained in memory.
Calculating time of break option must contain the number of minutes that the minimum of time of the
machine will be considered in break. Tolerance 10% eliminates short sequences of points that does
not meet the criterion of speed of the break and cannot be used for travel or production.

Calculate time of traction option allows you to specify the minimum speed at which the equipment
will not be considered in production but in traction. Tolerance 10% eliminates short sequences of
points not meeting the criterion of speed traction but cannot be used for a break or production. In the
case of site preparation activities, it is suggested to use a value of 5.0 km / hour. Using a lower value
will cause a lot of points in production that will be incorrect and classified as traction.
Change break to stop if a break has a duration of more option categorizes in the Break category
beyond this period.
The Consider unusual two consecutive points separated by more option detects cuts of the GPS
signal and alerts the user for a possible breach at the receiving antenna, the GPS sensor or device
power.

The Apply legend the layer point option displays the symbology of the layer depending on the status
and is calculated to determine if the values in the settings must be changed.
The legend distinguishes the points defined as Production, Traction and Pause. When machinery is
slow, it may be necessary to change the values of break parameters and Traction speed.
The example below the image in the center shows than the speed traction is not sufficient because no
point has the symbol "Production" compared to the right image where the speed was increased.

The procedure to change a status is to perform the steps listed below in the order specified.
The Report section lists the layers of points checked upon activation of the Process Report function.
The choice of a layer will display the results in the window depending on the selected day.
The Day section allows you to select the day to be displayed in this window. By default, this setting is
enabled under the All mode.
Selection allows a selection of features based on Pause, Production, Traction or full day attributes
depending on the day indicated in the Day section. The change of status will be based on this selection.
The Change the status of the selection section allows you to change the status of selected features by
choosing from the drop down new status and clicking on the button to save the menu changes. This
adds the identifier of the new status in the "PRESET" field specifying the letters P (Pause) T
(Traction), D (Production) or X (User). When the status is changed to the user, the user can manually
make the changes in the table.
The change of status can refine the report. Attributes will be preserved during the next scan by
checking the "Use the predetermined status" option of the Process Report window.

will be used to create lines and polygons. Several layers can be used for the creation of polygon and
even from different operators.
The type section identifies if the points contained in the layer are from a Harvester (A), a carrier (T) or
Combos (C). This parameter is determined before opening the Design geometry from the points
window. It may come from the name of the layer if it ends with "_A", "_T" or "_C" or by the frequency

The Type of analysis section allows you to specify the type of operation to achieve depending if the
desired profile is harvesting or Site preparation.
The Segment if the distance between two points is greater than option cannot connect two points if
they are separated by a great distance from the realistic movement of the machine. This phenomenon
happens when the GPS is closed or the machine moves from one sector to another on a transportation
vehicle.
The Vehicle width section is very important because the specified value can distort the real
calculations if it does not really represent the real width. The amplification of the width can
significantly change the area of results.
The value varies depending on the type of machinery and operation. Site preparation is usually between
4 and 5 meters (distance observed between the two grooves of a TTS or other) and a feller width will
be more around 14-20 meters (2 times longer extension possible to the felling head with the center of
the machine). Value is determined for all files and can combine several types of machines with
different widths. To preserve various width, machines have to be process separately.

The Trails occupation analysis function applies mainly to harvesting activities but it can also
sometimes be necessary to have an estimate of the percentage of a sector that has been scarified.
Calculating the percentage occupied by trails can be
useful to adjust how to operate the harvesters.
Indeed, if at the time of the cutting the percentage
occupied by the trail is already close to the limit, it is
likely that due to logging and timber transport, the
limit is exceeded.
Some layers must be used to calculate the occupancy
percentage trails like the polygons layer of sector, the

This option avoids the combination between two frames.
The Reorder points of harvesters at the frequency option must be activated when there is more than one
machine in the same block. This option will restore the chronological order of a machine layout based
on the time to capture GPS points (12, 60 or 150 seconds). This function avoids the zigzags caused by
two machines at the trail occupancy calculation. The Reclassement de points selon une fréquence
d’enregistrement (Reoder point of the frequency) function performs the same processing.

The Remove Overlap Points function allows to group together several files from one machine in a
single file and remove overlap points that are in the same geographical position.
This is specific to the Garmin GPS that are using
the 'Wrap when full' function, which means that
when the disc has reached its full capacity, it
continues his writing by restarting at the
beginning of the disc and overwriting the data
that is present. This phenomenon causes an
overlap and more than one point can be found in
the same geographical position.
It is possible to choose the field that contains the
date and time, to select an operator as well as a
particular type machine. The Layer of result of
the treatment has the same name as the original
file with the suffix "_tri. '"

The Automated processing function is only available for a server license. It can
generate a point layer, a layer of polygons (area treated) and a layer line (Path)
from ADM files from Garmin marine of 400, 500 and 700 series models. It
performs all of the same processing sequences by the method step.
Its implementation has a specific structure for the names of ADM files. It is
advisable to use the Preparing Data Card for Garmin
GPS function to generate daily or weekly files for these
types of devices.
The productivity analysis and trails occupation analysis
calculation reports may be subsequently generated.
This feature requires you to specify the GPS files folder.
The Create geometry option allows the process by
creating a layer of polygons and lines. When the option
is disabled, the treatment performed only imports GPS
points.

The Répertoire des fichiers GPS (directory GPS files) should contain the path where ADM files are
located.
The option Vérifier la correspondance entre le fichier ADM et la couche de données (Check the
correspondence between ADM file and the data layer) requires that the GPS data is contained in a
Feature Dataset of a file geodatabase. This option only performs a check unless the Importer
seulement les nouvelles données GPS (Import only new GPS data) option is enable.
The Créer le rapport d’activité (Create activity report) is disabled by default. This option generates
the same result obtained by the “Activity Report”.
The Créer les géométries (Create geometries) option creates a line and polygon layers. When this
option is disabled, the treatment performs only an importation of GPS Point.
The Découper les contraintes (Erase constraints) eliminates the intersecting areas of the constraints on
the polygons of polygon generating layer during processing.
The Mettre à jour la couche de suivi de coupe (Update cutting tracking layer) option is useful when
the areas are not harvested in the same week. This option combines two layers and merge adjacent
polygons.

The Configuration menu contains parameters for specify the speed, pause and stop time to use when
creating layers. These settings are applied by type of machinery.
The Largeur du traitement (Vehicle width) is the buffer zone to apply to the points.
The Segment if the distance between two points is greater than option cannot connect two points if
they are separated by a great distance from the realistic movement of the machine. This phenomenon
happens when the GPS is closed or the machine moves from one sector to another on a transportation
vehicle.
Calculating time of break option must contain the number of minutes that the minimum of time of the
machine will be considered in break.
The Speed option allows to specify the minimum speed at which the machinery will not be considered
in production, but in tension (Move). In the case of site preparation activities, it is suggested to use a
value of 5.0 km / hour. Employing a lower value will cause a lot of production points will be erroneous
and qualified in tension points.

The Durée de temps pour considérer comme un arrêt (duration of time to consider a stop) can
classify in the stop category the immobilization machinery beyond this period.
The Tolerance RATF option sets the tolerated distance between two vertices according to RATF
standard.
The Eliminate exclusions having an area equal to or less options allows to plug the holes among the
polygons created if the area of exclusion is less than or equal to the specified value.
The option Remove isolated polygons under option eliminates small polygons that are created from
very few points and remote enough not to merge with other polygons.
The Season start section is to specify the starting date of the season of process. This information is
usually taken from the file name.
The Number of days for the audit of frequencies ensures that the files used for automated
processing are corresponding to the same frequency.

The Area, Perimeters and Length Update function updates the database according to the geometry of
the layers of lines or polygons. The field names used are those defined in the configuration. Fields of
area and perimeter will be updated for polygon layers while the length field is updated to the layers of
lines.
The area can be calculated in hectares or square meters while the perimeters and lengths are in meters.
The Configuration interface allows
you to specify the field names.
The automatic operations of SMF

The Operation Machine Management function contains
features to configure the names of machines and contractors
specifying identifiers for a contractor code (3 characters), a
code for the machines (3 characters) and type of machines
(scrolling menu: A, T, C, D Abbateuse, Carrier Combos,
skidder).
These three criteria are important because the file’s name
used in the Preparing Data Card for Garmin GPS
function will include these three codes in the same order.
