D. Short term/mid-term R&D priorities to better serve marine operation applications
E. Suggestions for possible User Uptake activities
What are the new user requirements for marine operation applications (Europe, international)
● A new user: routing global, waves, currents, extend to winds. Use total current profile 0-16 m. Need tides. They are not looking for the best data, but the variability and confidence level are needed. Example: straits on transport routes.
● GLOBCURRENT: identified need for current profile in upper layer. Need to better define the currents in CMEMS MFC data.
● NetCDF convention: CMEMS could take a leading role in extending the CF convention. Ocean vocabulary conventions could be a tool to communicate with users.
● GODAE & JCOMM guidelines for validation metrics and vocabularies should be taken into account.
What are the new user requirements for marine operation applications (Europe, international)
● GLOBCURRENT has a user-study of requirements for surface current that can be used by CMEMS.
● Need for use cases and working service examples to demonstrate “how-to” to users.
● It is necessary to retain the present non-tidal current datasets (e..g. for downscaling).
● There is a need for more targeted sea ice information for the offshore industry and for defence.
What are the user requirements in particular for the wave products?
● Advantage of CMEMS waves is the coupling of waves and currents, and the consistency with the ocean model grid.
● There is a difference between internal user requirements and external user requirements (fitness-for-purpose). CMEMS needs to develop a strategy to discriminate between these requirements.
● Important to educate users that wave effects will be included implicitly in the surface currents. Important to retain the existing non-coupled currents (e.g. for downscaling).
● Need to maintain existing products and add new coupled products – let users decide how to use the new ones – if at all
● Need to provide uncertainties in the waves and new coupled datasets. The uncertainties need to be understandable and useful to users.
CMES offer: strengths and weaknesses
● No one volunteered to state problems with the CMEMS products.
● CMEMS offers both observations and model analyses/forecasts for users to intercompare.
● Uncertainty information is weak.
Short term/mid-term R&D priorities to better serve marine operation applications
● Tides are required and are planned.
● Uncertainty estimates are required for currents (total and non-tidal) and wave variables.
● Ocean optics is currently only an observed variable – could be a new MFC variable – needs to be validated.
● Coupling of waves and currents is important.
● GODAE OceanView Task Teams are a good international platform to identify R&D priorities. CMEMS should be well-represented.
Suggestions for possible User Uptake activities
● Consider the oil industry for training session. Ice in the Arctic is an issue.
● Emergency services (oil, SAR) global demos.
● Promote IMO and IHO standard data specifications to consider CMEMS products.
