A Museum of Science Traveling Program
Speed, Velocity & Acceleration
Description
Speed, Velocity &
Acceleration is a 60-
minute presentation about
motion, Newtonian
dynamics, potential
energy and kinetic energy.
Needs
We bring all materials
and equipment, including
a camera, video
projector, and screen.
Access to 110-volt
electricity is required.
Space Requirements
The program can be presented in assembly-
suitable spaces like gyms, multipurpose rooms,
cafeterias, and auditoriums.
Goals: Newton’s Laws
Newton’s Laws of Motion
are illustrated using a cart
that sails across stage and
a pencil-firing cannon.
Goals: Speed & Velocity
These different concepts
are contrasted using timed
sequences of lights and
student volunteers.
Goals: Acceleration
The concept of
acceleration as the rate
of change of velocity is
shown with the crack of
a bullwhip.
Goals: Momentum
The importance of mass is
shown as the angular
momentum of a spinning
wheel is dramatically
increased—by adding a
second wheel.
Additional Content
In addition to these core
goals, other concepts are
taught with a variety of
additional demonstrations.
Finale
All the programs’ concepts
are summarized with a
mechanical Trebuchet.
The students’ ideas help
optimize the device’s
range…
Finale
…to smash a target!
