Business CommunityCelebrate ExcellenceIt was an evening filled with glamour, excitement and magical moments.
The 17th annual Abbotsford Business Excellence Awards took place on Nov. 21 at Tradex, as the city’s outstanding business leaders gathered to honour their own.
The awards night was hosted by the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce and media partner The Abbotsford News.
A crowd of more than 550 came out to witness 90 worthy nominees vie for 11 awards, but the evening was more than a celebration of excellence. The event has become a business tradition and an opportunity to network while enjoying a gala atmosphere.
Guests were treated to live music, appetizers and a gourmet buffet dinner, as well as some impressive dance moves. Once again Business In Black – a troupe made up of local business leaders – entertained the crowd with its unique stylings. The group of well-known business people entertained the audience with a routine that spanned the music of the past few decades.
After the dancing, it was time to present the awards.
Rick Rake served as master of ceremonies,
and Chamber president Patrick Giesbrecht and Abbotsford News publisher Andrew Franklin provided emcee support for the awards segment of the evening.
After eight worthy businesses had been recognized, it was time for a break and an opportunity for the crowd to enjoy two-time world champion magician Shawn Farquhar.
Farquhar’s show was a mix of comedy and magic, featuring some impressive illusions. Choosing members of the audience to assist him, Farquhar dazzled the crowd performing feats of mind-reading, levitation and even escapism.
One of the highlights of the evening came when Farquhar invited Mayor Bruce Banman and Coun. Les Barkman on stage to help him tie up his assistant for an escape artist illusion.
Farquhar ended his show with a brilliant display of “close up magic.” Using a deck of cards, and performing to Sting’s song Shape of My Heart, he made cards appear and disappear at will.
After his performance, the final three awards of the night were handed out and the crowd was encouraged to start nominating more worthy businesses for next year’s celebration.

Strung Out On Beads was opened in Historic Downtown Abbotsford on May 5, 1994 by Marilyn Paller and Lisa Paller. Marilyn was an R.N. and worked in the Operating Room at M.S.A. Hospital for 30 years. Marilyn has been on committees promoting the revitalization of our downtown since the 1980s --- long before even thinking of starting a business. Eventually it became a dream to own a business with Lisa, although they had no idea what that business might be.
As a relaxing hobby Marilyn was making handmade lampshades, some with beaded fringes and some completely beaded. Lisa was painting and creating pottery and then also started making beaded lampshades. An obsession was slowly taking over.
When the idea of a beadstore ‘struck’ it was only three weeks from the time we found a small store to rent on Montrose until opening day.
Vitalus Nutrition Inc. is proud to be the only milk processing plant in Canada and one of 6 plants globally. They export their products around the world – Egypt, France, China and Japan to name a few.
Prized for its high quality, Vitalus products are making a name for Canadian milk on the global market.
Vitalus is dedicated to the continuous improvement of their
facilities and their product. Yearly quality objectives initiated by their strategic planning team ensure that they are constantly aiming for better performance.
Their vision for the future is to be the leading niche manufacturer of highly specialized Dairy Ingredients in Canada. They are collaborating with their valued customers to develop new and innovative products specific to their needs.

At Lepp Farm Market, they are known for their excellent selection of high-quality meats. They oversee the entire process – from hand selection and raising the animals, to preparing each cut of meat at the market by their talented butchers. Local and Lepp-raised, their animals are fed all-vegetarian diets and raised without the use of added growth hormones or antibiotics. As a family-run, year-round farm market, they feature their premium Black Angus beef, raised
on a vast ranch in Cache Creek and their pork and poultry are raised on Lepp Farms in Abbotsford.
They carefully select the best gourmet foods from around BC, and feature farm-fresh vegetables and fruits from their Okanagan orchard. They also support a number of Fraser Valley farmers in their community, which means that when in season, their produce is sourced locally, so it’s extra-fresh and delicious.

At Hana Sushi, they have a large customer base who frequent the restaurant. Many customers have made it a weekly outing to ensure they get the quality sushi and service they have come to expect. They keep their goals for serving customers simple: quick service with a smile, quality ingredients and care for every dish they create.
Using these ideals, Hana Sushi has been allowed to have a very loyal customer base which continues to grow. They are now planning to
expand the size of their restaurant so they can more comfortably serve the same great food in a friendly new environment.
The one person responsible for the success at Hana Sushi is Hester Lee. She is the hands-on owner that always serves customers with a smile and treats everyone like they are at home. Without her great care in demanding that quality comes before quantity, Hana Sushi would not be what it is today.
