SpaceVisualizationLabAssistantVolunteerTheAdlerPlanetariumhasauniquevolunteeropportunityavailabletowelcomeandintroducevisitorstotheSpaceVisualizationLaboratory(SVL)whenopentothepublic.SVLassistantshelpmakeexcitingresearchandAdlerprojectsaccessibleandensureahigh-qualityexperienceforourvisitors.SVLpresentstheuniqueexperienceofaworkingvisualizationlaboratorytomuseumvisitors.Variousprojectsarebeingdevelopedallthetime,andnewdevicesarebeingtested.VisitorscaninteractwiththematSVL,andmeetAdlerexpertsinanexcitingandengagingenvironmentwhilecontributingtheirfeedback.Inturn,theseinteractionshelpinthecreationofnewexperiences.Inthisworkinglaboratory,scientists,technicians,artists,andeducatorsworktogethertocreatenewwaysforpeopletoexploretheuniverse.AtSVLpeoplecanexperiencetheprototypesofnewinteractivevisualizationsthatwilleventuallymovetootherareasofthemuseum,andattendpresentationsbyastronomersandrelatedresearchersthattakeadvantageofthevisualizations.Modernastronomicalinstrumentsproducesuchmassiveamountsofdatathatastronomersnowrelyonadiversearrayoftoolstoproperlydisplayandanalyzethisinformation.Developingvisualizationsfurtherenablesscientistsandthepublictoexploreandinteractwiththeselargedatasetsinspecializedways.WelooktoSVLAssistantVolunteersto:

• Welcomevisitorsandinformthemabouttheexpertiseofthepresenter.• InformvisitorsthatintheSVLthereshouldbenomorethanfivechildrenper

adultin,supervisedbythatadultatalltimes.• Serveasroommonitor:makesurethatvisitornumbersaretrackedandthat

3Dglassesarecleanedanddistributed.• Attendtovisitoractivitytoassurevisitorsareusingthelaboratoryequipment

withinspecificguidelines.• Answerquestionsandexplainhowtouseinteractivevisualizations.• Monitorthatallequipmentisoperatingproperlyandrequestassistancewhen

necessary.• Makesuretheroomisleftinorderlyconditionwhenopenhoursarefinished. • Makesuretheroomdoorsaresecurelyclosedandlockedwhenopenhours

arefinished.

• AssistSVLstaffinmoviedatabasemaintenance,andotherbehind-the-scenestasksasrequested.

• Mustbe18orolder.• Abilitytoandinterestinworkingwiththepublic.• Someknowledgeofcomputersandtechnologypreferred.• Experienceinpublicspeakingoreducatingchildrenpreferred.

Trainingwillconsistof:

• AttendageneralVolunteerProgramorientation.• Additionaltrainingisprovidedonanindividualbasis.Newvolunteerswork

withstaffmemberstobecomefamiliarwithSpaceVisualizationLaboratorypoliciesandproceduresaswellastherestofthemuseum.

• Aone-dayshadowingofanexperiencedvolunteerisalsorequired.TrainingopportunitieswillbescheduledthroughtheVolunteerProgramManageruponacceptanceofposition.

Weaskvolunteersinthispositionto:

• Makeaminimumcommitmentof1year.• CurrentlyrecruitingforWeekdayshifts(11:45am-3:15pm)withaweekly

commitment,oralternatingSaturdayshifts(12:45pm-3:15pm)oralternatingSundayshifts(12:45pm-3:15pm).
