The First and Most Famous Suburban Developments were built by Bill Levitt

He named his planned communities Levittown

Segregation

• The act or practice of separating or isolating

De Jure Segregation

• The practice of segregation that has the force of law

• Many businesses in the South were segregated legally, that is, blacks were not legally allowed in some establishments

• Remember it like this “jure” sounds like jury, which meets in a courtroom where attorney practice law

De Facto Segregation

• The practice of segregation that is not mandated by law, but happens in reality

• Remember it like this: “facto” sounds like fact…this type of segregation doesn’t happen because of the law but it is still a fact

Redlining

• The practice of refusing to lend to people that lived in certain areas

• Usually this meant predominantly minority neighborhoods

Red Scare

HUAC

• House Un-American Activities Committee• Millions of Americans were forced to testify

before the HUAC to answer for their political beliefs

• Hollywood actors and writers, athletes, scientists, teachers, and union workers were among the many who were forced to testify

• Often appearances compelled by little more than rumors

Joseph McCarthy• Fervently anti-communist Republican Senator from Wisconsin

• Became famous by claiming to have a list of “members of the Communist party and other communist sympathizers” who were working in the highest levels of the American government

• His willingness to compel people to testify with only the thinnest of evidence became known as “McCarthyism”
