PRINCIPAL’S NEWS - Kirsty Squire Well, just when you thought that the P&C’s Splash-a-thon couldn’t get any better, it
did! What a fantastic time we all had on Friday. A huge thanks goes to the following
for their hard work in organising such a great day:
Leanne and Steve Jones for organising the day
Jodi Taylor and her band of helpers for organising and running the BBQ
The Somersby Fire Brigade and their many volunteers who gave up their time to
help run activities, teach our students about fire safety and give everyone a
show bag of goodies
The Hunter family for the fantastic water slide and all who helped to set it up and
pack it away (a huge job)
To the many parents and grandparents who came along on the day to help and
support the school
Donation cards can be returned to school with all students going into a draw for a
prize. The student from each year who has raised the most money will also receive a
gift so make sure the donations keep coming in.
We can’t wait for next year’s Splash-a-thon!
Chickens
We have six new members of the Somersby school community – six lovely chickens! A
big thank you to Mr Ward who built our brand new chicken coop out of recycled
materials, it looks fantastic. Classes will have turns in looking after the chickens and
we look forward to watching them grow.
Thank You
On Friday afternoon Lisa Wriley and the Kariong Eco Garden donated four banana
trees to the school which have been planted near the garden. We would like to thank
Lisa and the Eco garden for their generous donation.

A reminder to Year 6 parents that there will be a meeting held after school on
Thursday to discuss fundraising and end of year plans. We hope to see you there. If

Year 5/6 Kariong Mountains High School Meeting
Unfortunately Mrs Vine, the principal of Kariong Mountains High School, was unable
to attend last week’s meeting for a short time, therefore she has scheduled another
meeting for next Tuesday, 25th March at 2:15pm in the library. This is a chance for
students and their parents to meet Mrs Vine and find out about the high school.
Painting
The painting of the girls, boys and staff toilets is now complete and they are looking
nice and bright!
Stage 3 Excursion
Those wishing to attend the Stage 3 excursion to Canberra will need to pay a $50
deposit to guarantee a place. Please ensure deposits are paid ASAP.
Stage 2 Excursion
The Stage 2 excursion this year will be an overnight stay at Taronga Zoo. We will be
travelling with Peats Ridge, Central Mangrove and Spencer Schools leaving on
Thursday, 5th June and returning the following day. An itinerary and deposit note
have been sent home today.
Busways Safety Talk
This Friday Busways are coming to school to talk to the students about safe bus
travel. It serves as a timely reminder to all students that their behaviour on the bus
is important.
ICAS Tests
A note was sent home a while ago regarding the ICAS tests. If you would like your
child to sit these exams please fill in the note and return to school as soon as
possible.
ENVIRONMENT GROUP
2014 has been off to an excellent start with our enthusiastic group of environmental
leaders and assistants. We have lots of great ideas and plans for this year. One plan
we have is to upgrade the can recycling and crushing area. If anyone has any
unwanted bricks or pavers they'd like to get rid of, we are in search for some to
create a solid base for the cans to be crushed on. Please contact Mrs Cranstone if
you can help.
We would also like to welcome the 6 new members of our school. We have some
very cute chickens taking residence in our new chicken coop in the environment
area. We'd like to send a
HUGE thank you to
Mr Ward for working his
magic and making the
chickens’ new home very
comfortable. We look
forward to watching the
chickens grow and change
and collecting their eggs
when they are older. Come for a visit when you get a chance!

P&C News
Splash-a-thon
What a great afternoon we had on Friday! We would like to thank everyone who came along
and supported the kids. Also many thanks to all the parent helpers. Whether you helped
with events, lent buckets and hoses, helped with the BBQ, set up or packed up, your
contribution was greatly appreciated. Without you, we couldn’t have run this fundraising
event.
There are a number of individuals and organisations we would also like to recognise and
thank:
Somersby Rural Fire Service: Rob Willcox and Peter Oliver volunteered their time to
teach the children about fire safety. The children especially liked the fire
extinguisher display!
Gosford Rural Fire Service headquarters: Frank Overton provided the fire extinguishers
for our use, while Roy Owens provided fire safety awareness information and
giveaways.
Good Guys Tuggerah: Jed Rumbel and Graeme Doust donated prizes.
Active Sandblasting: Glenn Hunter provided the slide and helped set it up and pack it
away.
Jodie Taylor and Dani Scarr coordinated the BBQ.
New banner and shelter
We would like to thank Craig Squires for facilitating the donation of a new sun
shelter and banner to the school. As the benefactor prefers to do community good
anonymously, we can’t name them. But we are very grateful for their support.
Next meeting—Wednesday, 2 April
The P&C will meet at 7pm in the school library on Wednesday, April 2.
World’s Greatest Shave—Friday ,4 April Somersby School is once again registered for the World’s Greatest Shave. This year a very brave Shane Britten (father of Tallen) will be sacrificing his locks for this wonderful cause. Free Cyber Safety
Information Session In our ever more digitally connected world the use of
smartphones, iPads and apps has transformed the way
that we connect and communicate. It can feel like the
technology and culture is evolving so fast that it is hard
to keep up and understand the things that you, or your
children or grandchildren might be accessing or exposed
to online.
If you would like to educate yourself further regarding
cyber safety and keeping yourself and your family safe
and secure in a digital world we invite you to attend the
free Cyber Safety Information Session being hosted by
The Salvation Army and The Mingara Club on the 2nd of
April at 6:30pm.
The session will be presented by James Cameron, Team
Leader for The Salvation Army Oasis Youth Centre in
Newcastle, a Cyber communication specialist and
Chairman for Cyber Speak Australia.
Please confirm your attendance at this event by calling
the Welcome Desk at Mingara on 02 4349 7765.
