S omeone once wrote “Your weight in gold is not very much gold at all. Aren’t you worth more than that?” The question invites varied answers. We look to our life, our possessions, our family,
a pet, our spirituality, or a memory. Bearing in mind that there is no right or wrong answer, we tend to debate with ourselves what holds greater wealth. The material world, or the realm of the immaterial?
For some of us, though, gold still reigns supreme. The world saw a growth in demand for gold for the past year, and as of 2011, half of the world’s new gold consumption went towards jewellery. Not surprisingly, the gilded metal has forever been the most desirable material for coinage and jewellery.
In this, the annual Gold Edition of Solitaire, we address the precious metal in all forms and shapes, and from its most polished white to its most trendy rose colour. From east to west, we explore the adoptive techniques British jewellery crafter Jo Thorne and Chinese designer Fann Zhang experiment with on the malleable metal. Along with them, we explore how Damiani, Chopard, and Van Cleef & Arpels create the diamond-studded finery that graces our pages.
Golden, gilded, aurous, treasure. Pleasing to the eye and rewarding to the touch. Gold deserves nothing less than the most superlative of adjectives. We hope you enjoy what we have curated for you in our latest Solitaire issue.
