invitesyoutocomeandliveamongus,intheplacewhereMaugholdfirstsoughttopreachtheGospelover1400yearsago.AplaceravagedbytheVikings,boughtandsoldbythewealthythroughouthistory;alandnowfiercelyindependentandfree.

3UntilthereformationtheDiocesewaspartoftheNorwegianchurch,adetailleftoverfromourancientheritage.OurCelticheritageisshapedbyPatrick,German(andotherobscureCelticsaintslikeMaughold,CairbreandSanctain),creatingastrongfeelingofbeingaChurchofEnglandDiocesethatisnotpartofthe‘Englishestablishedchurch’.TheCathedralChurchofStGerman(knownasCatheralIsleofMan)istheCathedralchurchoftheDioceseof
SodorandMan(adiocesethattodayonlyincludestheIsleofMan,butoriginallyincludedthe'Sudrys'orSouthernIslesoftheArchdioceseofNidarosandTrondheimandincorporatedthewesternIslesofScotlandandpartoftheScottishCoast).
TheDioceseisthesmallestintheChurchofEnglandandservesapopulationofunder85,000people.
TheIslandisaselfgoverningCrownDependency–governedbyTynwaldnotWestminster.
Tynwaldistheworldsoldestcontinuallysittingdemocraticallyelectedparliamentbeginningin979AD.TheIslandisnotpartoftheEuropeanUnion,andevenprintsitsowncurrency.FamousforTTraces,catswithnotails,allthings‘threelegged’andsummerholidays.You’lldiscoverthatUKmobilephones‘roam’here,wehaveourownpostalservice,healthserviceandevenourownlanguage,ManxGaelic-andwe’relessthananhourfromLondon!
ThesenseofcommunityisstillverystrongontheIsland–fromthelocalsociallevelrightthroughtotheisland'sthrivingfarmingandfishingindustry.

needstobepreachedafreshforanewgeneration.

YouryearwillbebasedwithineithertheWestern,SouthernorEasternMissionPartnership.OurMissionPartnershipsaremadeupofanumberofparishes,eachwithit’sowncouncilandeachwithit’sowncharacterandemphasisonmissionandministry.
TheWesternMissionPartnershipismadeupof8churchesgroupedintotwoParishes.TheseincludetheIsland’sCathedralinPeel,andtheGovernmentChapel(knownlocallyas‘TheRoyalChapel).TheSouthernMissionPartnershipcomprisesthreeParisheswith10churchesbetweenthem.Thisgroupishometosomeofoursmallestandmostancientbuildings;somewithphysicalfoundationsgoingbackover1500yearsalongsideagroupofpeopletodaywhowouldliketheChristiancommunitytostillbehereinanother1500years.
TheEasternMissionPartnershipincludesDouglasandishometooverhalfoftheIsland’spopulation.WithamixofchurchtraditionsandsocialcontextsrangingfromthefinancialheartlandoftheIsleofMantolargesocialhousingschemes,theeasternpartnershipoffersanopportunitytoengageinarealmixedeconomyofchurch.

PeelisthemaintownontheWestCoastoftheIslandandisquicklybecominga'commutertown'forDouglas(thecapital)intheEast.CastletownisthemaincenterinthesouthandishometotheIsland’sinternationalairport,Ronaldsway.
Ourcurrentbishopisworkingveryhardtoensurethedioceseremainsagood,faithfulandsecureservantoftheIslandcommunity–butthisiswiththerecognitionthatthingscannotstayastheyare.InthecomingyearstheDiocesewillcertainlyseechurchclosures(intotalwehave44Anglicanchapelsandchurches)asweconcentrateonlivingouttheMissioDei.Alongsidethisweareonlyjustbeginningtodevelopandexperimentwith‘freshexpressions’andalternativeworship.
September2016willseethearrivalofourfourthcohortofinterns;youryearontheIsleofManwillseegiveyoutimeandspacetoexplorealongsideroomtoexperimentanddiscern.
Thisisadiversecommunitywithgrowingecumenicalpartnerships,deepruralvillagesandurbantowns.TheIsleofManisplacewhereyoucancreateandshapeyourownministryasyouconsiderGod’scall.

Theyearrunsfor11monthsfromSeptemberthroughtoJuly.FollowinganinductionprograminSeptember,you’llspendtheremainingpartoftheyearengagingwithreallifeonourIsland.
Theinduction,runwiththehelpofourpartners,willgiveyouawelcometoIslandlife,practicalskillsandresourcestogetyoustartedrightawayandachancetomakenewfriendsfromdayone.ThiswillincludeaninductiontotheDiocese,theMissionpartnerships,theParishandallthingsAnglicanaswellanintroductiontoourecumenicalpartners.
Yourtimemightbefocusedonaspecificarea,ormightsimplybemoregeneralasyougetaninsightintotheworkingofParishlifeasapotentialordainedministerintheChurchofEngland.Your‘placements’willbesharedequallybetweenworkwiththeCathedralTeamanda‘parish’.Thiswillgiveyoutheopportunitytobepartofalargeteam,whilstfindingoutwhatitisreallylikeforthemanyparochialclergywhoministeraloneaspriestandpioneer.
Youryearwillusethe9‘criteriaforselection’asafoundation.Whilstwerecognizethatnotallinternswillgoontobeordained,thesecriteriaprovideabasisonwhichtoconsidercarefullyGod’svisionandpurposeforyourlifeahead.
Throughouttheyearyou’llbeguidedbyasupervisorwhowillworkwithyouinaprocessoftheologicalreflectiononyourpractice.
AlongsidelifeintheParish,youareinvitedtoenrollasastudentoncoursescurrentlyrunbyAllSaints,ortheDiocesanCertificateinChristianStudies.Wehopethesewillprovideabasisforfurtheracademicdevelopmentalongsideyourpracticeandexperience.

ScriptureUnionMinistriesTrust(SUMT)SUMTwasestablishedover20yearsagoontheIsleofManandispartoftheScriptureUnionAssociatesScheme.AregisteredManxcharitywithastrongleadershipteamofTrustees,anexecutivebody,paidstaff,andaraftoffantasticvolunteers-fulltimeandparttime.SUMTconnectsinwithlocalchurches,primaryandsecondaryeducation,andhasestablishedagapyearprogrammeforemergingleadersofferingtrainingopportunitiesforyoungpeoplefocusingonyouthworkandChristianleadershipfromintroductorylevelthroughtodegreelevel.SUMTwillpartnertodelivertheinductionprogramme–includingfirstaid,COSHH,Safeguarding,teamskills,schoolswork,personaldevelopment,leadershiptraining.SUMTarebasedina‘communityhouse’–Mallmore–ontheSouthCoastoftheislandandwillofferawelcomeretreat,asourceofgreatpastoralcare(andcoffee)andacollectionofotheryoungpeopleallexploringChristianMinistryfrommanydifferentdenominations.FindoutmoreaboutSUMTatwww.sumt.im

DuringyourtimeonIslandyouwillbeliving‘incommunity’inasharedhouseinPeel.AStudybedroomwillbeprovidedforeach‘intern’withinafivebedroom,threebathroomhouse.SituatedinthecenterofPeel,thetraditionalthreestoreyterracealsohastworeceptionroomsandKitchendiner/breakfast-room.Thehouseislessthanfiftyyardsfrom
theDeanery,CathedralandOffice.Utilitybills,rates,wi-fiarepaidbytheDiocese.‘Pool’carsareavailabletohelpwithtravelaroundtheisland. Living‘in-community’offersachancetofurtherdevelopbasiclifeskills,togrownewandhopefullylifelongfriendshipsinacontextofformationanddiscipleship.
Weestimatethatyouwillneedaround£65perweekforyourown‘pocketmoney’tocoverthingslikeclothing,contributiontowardseveningmeals,yourownmobilephonebills,toiletries,traveland‘timeout’andpersonaltravel.Wecansendyouacopyofasuggestedbudget–justask!
Werecognizethatgivingayearofyourlifeispriceless,sowhereverpossiblewewillseektohelpyouwiththesecosts.
