know my costs and sadly it took me 25 years to learn I wasn’t making money! We are artists but we work for a living.

It took me 2 weeks to figure out my spreadsheet - to know what money I was making on every single service - it was a big eye opener!

It’s not just about being a good cutter, colourist, or a nice person… you also have to be good at business! I worked really hard for peanuts! Now, if my client is unhappy with my prices they can go elsewhere (to another salon who doesn't know they’re not making money) because I don’t want to work for nothing anymore.

From my spreadsheet I made many small changes. I was too generous in the commission I was paying, so I reduced it, but the team didn't lose because the prices were now correct - I made my services profitable and refined everything, so my team still earned the same (even though the percentage went down a bit).

I can now tell you that I am spending about 20k less on products but have made an extra 30K in income just this year. All because of spending 2 weeks on a spreadsheet!

What do you love about hairdressing?I am super grateful (to be a hairdresser) and I love my work everyday of my life.I love the people and I believe you need to have good energy between yourself and your client to get the best result.

How did you grow your career?I learned the most standing backstage. For three years I worked backstage helping with prep. This made me curious to learn more. I opened my first salon in Quebec, Canada, at the age of 22 and built it from scratch. I did the same in Maine, USA, 6 years ago and I now run a much better business.

What advice do you have for stylists starting out?You will succeed with a dedication to learn! Pass over your fear. Open all the doors and go further. Some people have a lot of talent but never use it - others just work really hard and become very successful.

You will hit a wall of fear. Recently, I heard Benni Tognini from Australia speak and he said, “It’s normal to be scared. It’s normal to feel uncomfortable.” When he said that, I realised that ‘I’m not alone. It’s just normal.’

Your best advice to salon owners?The best advice I could give to salon owners is, ‘Do a spreadsheet!’ I now
