7.3 Give two Best Practices of the institution.
1. Competitive Examinations Centre 2. Short Term Courses
Best Practice 1
1. Title of the Practice: Competitive Examinations guidance Centre.
2. Objectives of the Practice:
1) Create awareness and eagerness about competitive examinations among students
particularly those from the deprived section.
2) Provide quality coaching and study material and make them determined to face their cut-
throat competition.
3) Iinvolve them into government functions by arranging guest lecturers of officers, civil
servants, social workers and bankers, etc.
4) Transform students into an honorable and conscious citizens of the country by arranging
various workshops, social programmes and career counseling lectures, etc.
5) Provide them quality material in the form of books, magazines, newspapers and computers
with internet, etc.
6) Provide them peaceful environment to study in air-conditioned place with a total capacity
of 600 seats.
7) Introduce them to various fields of government and private jobs recruited through
competitive examinations such as MPSC, UPSC, STI, PSI, ASST, SSC,PSUS, Banking,
Railways and Charted Accountant, etc.
8) Plan and conduct coaching and training programmes to contest competitive examinations.
3. The Context:
The competitive examination is different from other regular examinations in its
approach and understanding. As the name implies, the cut-throat competition is the
distinctive characteristic of it. This examination requires a thorough knowledge of all fields,
60 S.M.Joshi College Hadapsar Pune (MS) AQAR-2016-2017
from arts to science and from quantitative skills to language proficiency. It requires aspirant
to be ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’. The educational background of an aspirant is not \of
much importance. Competitive examinations bring students of all backgrounds on the same
platform. We took benefit of this aspect of our students as our college has students of four
streams that is science, commerce, arts and computer science.
Being on the outskirts of the Pune city, the college has feeding from lower-middle-
class and rural area where students do not otherwise have access to such guidance programme
regarding the competitive examinations. The Competitive Examinations Centre was
established for coaching these students to compete for different examinations conducted by
Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) and Banking examinations conducted by
Institution of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS).
4. The Practice
The centre provides class room teaching by experts in the respective domains. The students
are provided with books, AC study room, LCD Projector, free internet, mock tests and mock
interviews to sharpen their competitive skills. There is a separate AC study room for girls.
The centre also provides opportunity for students to interact with previous successful
candidates. The students are also benefited by live lectures broadcast arranged by the Rayat
Shikshan Sanstha through video conferencing.
Activities organized during 2016-17
A) Residential one month summer camp for girls
One-month residential summer camp for girls from different colleges of Rayat
Shikshan Sanstha was organized during 4-28 May 2016. All the expenses of the camp were
borne by Rayat Shikshan Sanstha and S.M. Joshi College. 72 girls participated in the camp.
In order to motivate the students, guidance by successful officers who have risen from lower
or lower-middle-class was given along with subject experts. To create awareness about
physical and mental fitness, everyday schedule used to commence with ground
activity/yoga/judo-karate and prayer. In the evening program, the students were also
motivated by motivational video clips, films and documentaries. Following it, the lectures on
61 S.M.Joshi College Hadapsar Pune (MS) AQAR-2016-2017
various subjects were arranged on the camp. Three weekly tests were conducted and first
three numbers were felicitated in the valedictory function.
