field.Itisarobust,evidenceandcompetencybasedprogramthathelps

prepareandequiphumanitariansforthefieldandensuretheydeliver

high quality aid in a safe and secure manner. This performance

measured program is designed forall humanitarian professionals;

including logisticians, project managers, security personnel, human

rightslawyers,andhealthcareprofessionals.

WhatWeOfferUThe Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response SimulationTraining Program is an educational program that proposes a novel,field based, 4-day disaster simulation exercise in British Colombia,Canada. Using content that has been developed by humanitarianprofessionals and academia over the last 15 years, this simulationexercise uses competency based pedagogical methods to providelearnerswitharewardingandimpactfullearningexperience.

The4-daytrainingprogramincludes:

§ Awelcomewine&cheesecocktailwiththeopportunitytonetworkwithotherparticipantsandhumanitarianworkersfromacrosstheglobe

§ A1-dayin-classpre-simulationpreparationtraining

§ A3-daysimulationexerciseinthefield

§ 32 hour online humanitarian certificate program

Participantsapplytheirskillsinareasspecifictohumanitarianresponseincluding:• Health• Water&Sanitation• Food• Shelter• Security&Protection

They also use core humanitarian principles to coordinate the emergencyresponse; this includes running meetings and applying global standards for allareasofhumanitarianresponse.

Theyalsoengagein:• Enumerationofpopulations;• Calculationofimportanthealthindicators;• Translation of qualitative data into numbers needed for treatment and

financing.

The SimEx is designed to simulate acomplex humanitarian emergency thatrequires a comprehensive understandingof war, natural disasters and forceddisplacement, and the impact of culturalcontexts on the affected populations.Participants are immersed in thesimulation for the whole weekend,working in multidisciplinary, NGO-basedteams, each tasked with a series ofactivitiesservingthefictionalpopulations.Teams must find dynamic solutions tocomplicated problems including securityincidents, mass displacement, childsoldiers, environmental shocks, limitedresources,supplyissues,assessmentsanddonorrelations.

Competency-basedEvaluation

Simulationexercisesareacrucialadditiontoclassroomandonlinetrainingsforindividualsandteamspriortoworkinginthefield.Humanitarianworkersfacemanysituationsthatdemandpriorexposureandrealistictraining;SimExaddressesthisneed.

Simulation-basedtrainingtechniques,tools,andstrategiescanbeintegratedintostructuredlearningexperiences,andcanbeusedasameasurementtoolfortargetedcompetenciesandlearningobjectives.

Competency-basedevaluationinasimulatedsettingallowsparticipantstobenchmarktheirperformance,identifyareasforimprovementandhasthepotentialtodeterminereadinessforthefield.OurcompetencyframeworkisinformedbytheStartNetwork’sHumanitarianCompetencyFramework2011,previouslytheConsortiumofBritishHumanitarianAgencies(CBHA).TheFrameworkincludessixmajordomainswithseveralsub-categoriesineach.

Ourcomprehensivecompetency-basedassessmentapproachprovidesahighlyobjectivemeasurementofcompetencyandcanbenchmarkstudentperformancebothindividuallyandcomparedtotheirpeers.Italsoprovidesanindicationofsuitabilityfordeploymentinahumanitariansetting.
