THE “new” Great MoscowCircus will delight Dur-banites on Friday, 24 March,at SunCoast Casino.

The two-hour spectacle willfeature 75 entertainers, andwill be in South Africa for 20weeks.

According to producerMichael Edgley, the show is“bigger and better”.

“Forget everything you haveever heard about the circusand prepare yourselves for anunbelievable new experience.“Nothing is repeated, every-thing’s new,” said Edgley.

He added that the GreatMoscow Circus Big Top hadbeen updated with new air-conditioning and over R3-million in new lights and asound system.

BILLED as the African ArtCentre’s “most significantand popular exhibition of theyear”, Amagugu VII –Treasures runs at the OldStation Building untilSaturday, 25 March.

The exhibition features acollection of special pieces ofbeadwork.

According to exhibitiondirector Anthea Martin, about1 000 pieces will beshowcased.

“We have wooden spoons,milk pails, headrests,imbenge and ceramics,” saidMartin.

“The beadwork has been

collected from a variety ofsources.

“These include theNgxamanga, Fengu, Pedi,Xhosa and Pondo groups inthe Eastern Cape, as well asthe Xhesimbe, Swayimaniand many other groups inKwaZulu-Natal.

“Items of special interestthis year are entire outfits forboth men and women fromMsinga, Greytown,Maphumulo, The Valley of1000 Hills and Umkomaas.

“These will be sold ascomplete outfits.”

An accompanyingcatalogue will be available,with photographs compiledby Martin.

DESIGNERS and chefs willshow off their creative flair atthe Decorex KwaZulu-Natallifestyle event at theInternational ConventionCentre (ICC) from tomorrowuntil Tuesday, 21 March.

The lavish event, themed“Delicious By Design” and inaid of Save the ChildrenKwaZulu-Natal, will feature astellar cast of local designersfrom a range of creativefields: from décor, fashionand food to flowers anddinnerware.

Designer tables will be theshowpieces, displaying thelatest fabrics, flatware,fragrant centrepieces,gourmet food, designeraccessories and quirkydecorative detail like crystal,candles, silver, silks andserviettes.

According to director of

Decorex SA, MelanieRobinson, the aim of theevent is for local designers tomake a meaningfulcontribution to better thelives of children in need.

“Feast your eyes on theart of the table, then putin your bid to take thissplendour home. Thefabulous table creationsand designer accessories

will be auctioned to raisefunds for the under-privileged children who aresupported by Save theChildren KZN,” saidRobinson.

Renowned abstract artistTay Dall’s donation of apainting entitled In theMoment, valued at R19 000,will be auctioned.

WINNING at the Toronto andEdinburgh film festivals lastyear, and recently taking anOscar at the AcademyAwards, Tsotsi (Thug) hasbeen the subject of muchcritical acclaim – andrightfully so.

The movie is set in a Johan-nesburg township and tellsthe story of a young man,hardened by his childhood,who eventually learns themeaning of love and respect.

Tsotsi, played by PresleyChweneyagae, heads a groupof criminals. After a scufflewith one of his gangmembers, Tsotsi is forced toconfront a past he has tried tokeep buried. In a fit of anger,he hijacks the car of a womanin a posh suburb.

He later discovers her babyin the backseat and panics,crashing the vehicle. His firstresponse is to run away, buthis conscience is stirred andhe takes the baby home withhim. Through caring for the

infant, Tsotsi learns that hisactions have repercussionsand he finds out what it feelslike to care for someone.Tsotsi is a drama but islittered with specks ofhumour and follows theclassic “bad guy turns good”,“love overpowers all” story-line – minus the happyending. This and superbacting makes it a great movie.

Tsotsi is a proudly SouthAfrican must-see!
