THE HISTORY OF OLD MANDEVILLE
If you are going to buy up rugged north shore wilderness bordering Lake Pontchartrain, convert it into a grid of streets and blocks and create lots for sale within those blocks to the highest bidder, why not go ahead and name your creation after yourself? Not a bad idea really. And that is exactly what New Orleans-born Frenchman Bernard Phillipe Xavier de Marigny de Mandeville did when his keen specula-tive entrepreneurial instincts told him that the land he owned would be a perfect place to create a new settlement and it would be called Mandeville. After plotting out the streets and creating the blocks and the lots within the blocks, Bernard Mari-gny -- as he is now most commonly known -- held two public auctions in 1834, selling his new creations to the highest bidders. The reception to his offer was brisk, business was good, and out of that came the creation of the resort-fishing village of Mandeville. In 1840 the bustling settlement was incorporated by the state of Louisiana as the town of Mandeville. It was not long before the landed gentry -- many of them Creoles who had made fortunes in the cotton industry then flourishing at the Cotton Exchange in New Orleans -- discovered Marigny’s creation on the north shore and its alluring open expanses of lakefront.

Soon they came with money and materials and built Victorian era mansions along the lakefront, interspersed with bustling commercial hotels, bars, fishing and docking and bathing piers, restaurants, and by mid 19th Century, Mandeville was a popular resort destination not only for wealthy New Orleanians seeking respite from the city’s summer heat but increasing numbers of northern visitors steaming down to the city and catching the steamboats from the city to Mandeville’s popular docks. Early after the turn of the century those boats brought something else: musicians with names now of legendary status in the development of a brand new kind of music -- traditional or Dixieland or New Orle-ans jazz. Call it what you will but it was a sound never before heard and it has become hallowed as America’s only totally original cultural gift to the world.
It was not long before this music made its way up the Misissippi River, to the west coast and by the late 1930s across the ocean to Europe and eventually around the world. But first many of those pioneer New Orleans musicians made their first forays out of the city to Mandeville to play and perfect their creation at the Dew Drop Social & Benevolent Hall built in 1895 on Lamarque Street three blocks from the lakefront. Young Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory, Bunk Johnson, Buddy Petit, Sam Morgan, the Fritz Bros. and others are among those who rode the boats over and played long weekends at the Dew Drop, still standing, still offering music and now recognized as the world oldest virtually unaltered rural jazz dance hall. The historic heart --now affectionately called Old Mandeville -- still revolves around those original streets, blocks and lots first laid out and sold in 1834 by the city’s founder. And the qui-et, old world charm, historic homes, sheltering live oaks and other ancient trees, that inspiring and soothing exposure to the lakefront and breathtaking sunsets, and bustling commercial establishments including charming restaurants and boutique businesses, define the endur-ing essence of Old Mandeville today as it was in the early 1800s. Welcome to historic Old Mandeville.--- by Richard Boyd
