1. Do not subject the unit to shocks or vibration.
If the unit is subjected to shocks or vibration, it may
damage the HDD or cause corruption of the data stored in
the HDD.
• Do not move the unit while the power is turned on.
Always be sure to turn off the power before removing the
unit from or placing it onto the rack.
• When transporting the unit, pack it securely using the
specified packing materials. In addition, use a method of
transportation that minimizes vibration.
• When placing the unit down on a surface such as a floor,
attach the specified feet to the base of the unit and place
it down gently. If the feet are not attached, place the unit
down very carefully so that it does not make any noise.
2. Do not move the unit for 30 seconds after turning
off the power.After the power is turned off, the disk inside the HDD will
continue to spin for a brief period due to inertia, and the
heads will be in an unstable state.
During this time, the unit is even more susceptible to
shocks and vibration than when power is being supplied.
Make sure that the unit is not subjected to even gentle
vibration for at least 30 seconds after turning off the
power.
3. Do not operate the unit when condensation has
formed.If the unit is operated when condensation has formed, it
may cause operating problems.
If sudden changes in the ambient temperature occur, wait
for the temperature to stabilize before operating the unit.
NOTES ON HANDLING INTERNAL HDD COMPONENTSThis unit has a built-in hard disk drive (HDD).
Be sure to observe the following points carefully when operating, setting-up and servicing the unit.
4. Notes when replacing the HDD
Be sure to follow the correct replacement procedure when
replacing the HDD.
• HDDs that have been removed from their packaging may
not operate correctly if they are subjected to any shocks
or vibration. It is recommended that you place the HDD
onto a soft, level surface with the printed circuit board
facing upward after unpacking it.
• Be careful not to subject the HDD to shocks or vibration
when removing and tightening screws as part of the HDD
replacement procedure. Make sure that all screws are
tightened securely so that they will not become loose.
• The HDD is sensitive to static electricity, so you should
take proper precautions to prevent static electricity
buildup.
5. Handling the HDD unit by itselfIf transporting or storing the HDD unit by itself, always be
sure to pack it in the specified packaging first.
In addition, use a method of transportation that minimizes
vibration.
If the HDD becomes damaged, handle the unit and the
damaged HDD that has been removed in order for it to be
replaced carefully to prevent the problem from being
aggravated until as the nature of the problem can be
checked and analyzed.

3-2. INSTALLATION OF A VZU-COM300
3-2-1. INSTALLING THE BOARD
1. Remove the 6 screws securing the cover (4 on sides, 2 onrear), and remove the cover.
Remove the 2 screws on the rear cover of the hard diskrecorder, and remove the rear cover.
2. Attach the 2 spacers to the holder, perpendicular to it.
3. Use the 2 screws provided to attach the holder to the insidebottom of the hard disk recorder, orienting the holder’s printed“R” to the right.
4. Tilting the interface board slightly, attach the board to theholder, fitting the spacers into the two holes in the board.
Make sure that the ends of the spacers protrude from theinterface board.
5. Fasten the interface board to the hard disk recorder usingthe 2 screws removed in Step 1 (screws for attaching therear cover).
6. Align the orientations of harness connectors with theconnectors on the interface board and hard disk recorder,and plug them in securely, keeping them straight.
When unplugging the connectors, pull them carefully out,keeping them straight.
7. Attach the cover removed in Step 1, and fasten it with the 6screws.
3-2-2. SETTINGS AFTER INSTALLATION
After installing the interface board, perform the steps below.1. Turn the hard disk recorder’s power ON.2. Set each item in “2. RS-232C/RS-485 SET” in <MAIN MENU
2>.3. Set “NETWORK CONTROL” in “5. NETWORK SET” in
<MAIN MENU 2> to “ON”.
CAUTIONFor instructions regarding connecting to the hard disk recorderand setting procedures, refer to the manual for the DSR-300.

4.OVERWRITING THE FIRMWARE
4-1. Overwriting the firmware
4-1-1. Preparation
Install a new HDD or a HDD that has been recorded by
another set into the HDD case.
4-1-2. Procedure1. Insert the HDD case that has been prepared into the set
that is to have its firmware updated, and turn the key
clockwise to lock it.
2. Insert the CompactFlash card containing the firmware
into the CompactFlash card of the set, and turn on the
power for the set.
3. Press the [MENU] button twice to display the <MAIN
MENU2> screen.
4. Use the [ ] button or the [ ] button to select "7.
POWER FAILURE/USED TIME", and then press the
[CUE] button to display the <POWER FAILURE><USED
TIME> screen.
Check the firmware version that is displayed.
5. Press and hold the [STILL] button (or approximately 4
seconds) until the cursor appears.
6. Use the [ ] button to move the cursor to "FIRMWARE"
and then press the [ENTER] button.
The <FIRMWARE UPDATE> screen will be displayed.

7. Insert Use the [ ] button to change the "NO" that appears
on the screen to "YES".
8. Press the [ENTER] button.
The firmware update will start.
When the firmware update is finished, the set will restart
automatically and the time will appear as "0:00".
Note: Do not remove the CompactFlash card until the set
has restarted.
9. Carry out steps 3 and 4, check that the firmware version
has changed, and then close the menu screen.
10. Set the clock to the approximate time, record for about 10
seconds and check that the recording plays back correctly.
11. To return all settings to their factory defaults, press the
[ALL RESET] button at the rear of the set and the [MENU
RESET] button at the front of the set at the same time.
Then while keeping the [MENU RESET] button at the front
pressed, release only the [ALL RESET] button at the rear.
When a beep sounds, release the [MENU RESET] button
at the front.
The set will then restart automatically.
12. Once the set has restarted, press the [PLAY] button
twice.
Check that a series of short beeps sounds and that
playback does not occur.
If playback occurs normally, repeat the procedure from
step 11.
13. Press the [CHANGE DISK] button and keep it pressed
until a beep sounds.
14. Wait until the LED on the [CHANGE DISK] button lights
green.
When the LED lights green, turn off the power for the set
and turn the key of the HDD case counterclockwise to
unlock it.
Remove the HDD case and the CompactFlash card.

4-2. Overwriting the sub-firmware4-2-1. Setting up the computer
Use the Hyper Terminal which is compatible with Windows
95 , 98 or other.
1. Installing the interface board (VZU-COM300).
2. Connect the RS-232C connector on the digital video re-
corder (VZU-COM300) with the RS-232C connector on the
computer using an interlink serial interface cable. Connect
a monitor to the MONITOR 1 output of the digital video re-
corder. Then turn on the power and start Windows 95 , 98
or other.
3. Open Windows Explorer, and then run the file \Program
Files\Accessories\Hyper Terminal.
Save the updated firmware into the computer.
4. Open Windows Explorer, and then run the file \Program
Files\Accessories\Hyper Terminal\Hypertrm.exe.
The Connection Description window appears.
5. Click the Cancel button in the Connection Description win-
dow, or enter your name and then click the OK button.
The Hyper Terminal window appears.
6. Click the File (F) button in the Hyper Terminal window, and
then click the Properties (R) button.
The Properties dialog box appears.
7. In the Properties dialog box, set Connect using (N) in Phone
Number to “Direct to COM”, and then click the Configure
(F) button.
The port Setting window of the COM1 Properties dialog box
appears.
8. In the Port Settings window, change the settings to match
the controller.
Speed: 38400
Data bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
Flow control: Hardware
9. Click the OK button.
The Properties dialog box appears.
10. Click the OK button in the Properties window.
The Hyper Terminal window appears.
This completes the computer settings.

4-2-2. Overwriting method1. While pressing the PLAY/STOP button on the digital video
recorder, press the ALL RESET button at the rear.
A beep will sound and the digital video recorder will switch
to overwriting mode.
2. In the "Hyperterminal" window of the computer, click
"Transfer (T)", and then click "Text File Transfer (T)".
The "Text File Transfer (T)" window will be displayed.
3. Change the "Save as type" setting to "All Files (*.*)", and
then select the name of the file to be transferred so that it
appears in the "File name (N)" box.
4. Click "Open (O)".
Overwriting will start, and the LED on the digital video
recorder's front panel will flash.
After about 3--4 minutes, a buzzer will sound and overwrit-
ing will be complete. The digital video recorder will then
restart automatically.
5. Close the "Hyperterminal" window at the computer.
4-2-3. Checking the overwriting operation1. Display the POWER FAILURE/USED TIME sub-menu.
2. Check that the firmware version has been updated.

4-3-1. Computer preparation1. Install the adjustment software (Camapi32.dll and
DscCalDi.exe) to "Same folder".
2. Save the updated firmware into the computer.
4-3-2. Overwriting the firmware1. Use an interlink serial cable to connect the RS-232C
connector of the overwriting tool (VHJ-0141) to the RS-
232C connector of the computer.
2. Remove the top cover of the digital video recorder, and
connect the 6-pin socket of the writing tool to the CN272
socket on the CD-1 circuit board.
3. Turn on the power for the digital video recorder and the
computer, and start Windows.
4. Press the boot switch (S0002) and the reset switch
(S0001) of the writing tool simultaneously.
Release the reset switch first, and then release the boot
switch.
The boot LED of the digital video recorder will flash.
5. Double-click the "DscCalDi.exe" filename on the computer
screen.
6. Click "Firmware" in the Adjustment window on the com-
puter screen, select the updated firmware, and then click
"Open".
7. Click "Yes" in the firmware upload confirmation screen.
8. When "OK" is displayed, overwriting of the firmware is com-
plete.
9. Click "OK" to a completion.
