The Importance of Character in an Age of Image

The Gospel of Luke 12:1-3

1 In the meantime, when so many thou-

sands of people had gathered togetherthat they were trampling one another,he began to say to his disciples first,“Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy….”

“You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you when he said, ‘This people honors me with their lips but their heart is far from

me….’” ~ Jesus of Nazareth in Matthew 15:8-9

We spend too much precious time and energy managing

perception and creating carefully edited versions of ourselves

to show to the world.

“”~ Brené Brown

The gap between the public me & the private me.

Hypocrisy

“The heart is deceitful above all things…”

~ Jeremiah 17:9

“First we deceive ourselves, and then

we convince ourselves that we are deceiving

ourselves.”

“Whether we like it or not, the term ‘hypocritical’ has

become fused to young people’s experience with Christians. Eighty-five

percent of young outsiders have had sufficient exposure to Christians and churches

that they conclude present-day Christianity is

hypocritical.”

2 Nothing is covered up that will not

be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered inprivate rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.

“God will bring every deed into judgment,

with every secret thing, whether good

or evil.”~ Ecclesiastes 12:14

Hypocrisy is the gap between what people see and the real me.

“I was afraid because

I was naked,

and I hid myself.”~ Genesis 3

“Whoever conceals his transgression

will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them

obtains mercy.” ~ Proverbs 28:13

“…[we] are walking scandals

waiting to happen….”
