for the food bank again, we will once again open it for needy pets and the families that love them. Thank you for
your understanding and support in this matter

PUZZLE ANSWERS
SUPERVISOR’S CORNER
Fall is in the air! I love the fall season, it’s my favorite time of year. Although it takes a bit before we enjoy a lot of
it here in Florida, there is just something that makes a body feel good. The air cools down and we get a break from
the heat, and the rain slacks off a bit so we can get outdoors more. The days get shorter and the evenings longer.
Bonfires & marshmallows, hot cocoa and sweaters! I love sitting on the porch on a cool evening looking at the stars.
Is it just me or do they seem brighter in the fall?
I know we do not get a lot of leaf color down here like our northern parts, but what we do get sends the spirits
soaring. Everything is getting ready for the winter’s rest. Speaking of such, we get ready also. Maybe not to the ex-
tent of other places but there are things that need to get done and stored and ready for the coming year. Our pets
should be one of them. It is a common misconception that our pets require less care in the fall, but that is just what it
is—a misconception. Fleas and ticks do not take a break in the fall or winter seasons (especially in Florida). With the
change in temperatures our pets need closer monitoring to guard against cold. Vaccinations if due in the fall time
need to be kept current to ensure their good health. Regular vet visits need to be carried out as in any other time of
the year.
With all the holidays coming up we get into the season and quite often forget the impact these may have on our
pets. Trick or treaters on Halloween, large family gathering at Thanksgiving and Christmas, not to mention the
heightened sense of excitement and don’t forget the commotion of a rousing New Year’s party. These are things we
look forward to at this time of year but most times our pets do not share our enthusiasm, so while we are enjoying
this nice time of year, keep our pets in mind. Take precautions for them and their safety and well being and you both
will have very happy holidays and will be able to look forward to a new year and enjoy the coming of Spring when
everything will once again feel fresh and new. Now if you will excuse me I am going to see if I can find a pile of
leaves to jump into.

CHAPTER 828

As I was struggling with a topic
for this month’s newsletter, I
asked mom if she had any ideas
and she asked if I was suffering
from “writer’s block”. What in
the world is that? So being a
naturally curious creature (as we
cats are want to be) I did some
investigating and this is what I
found.
According to Wikipedia,
writer’s block is a condition as-
sociated with the writing profes-
sions where authors loose the
ability to produce new work. It
can be short lived or can last for
years. Cartoonist Charles
Schultz was known to struggle
with this from time to time.
creative problem within the au-
thor’s work itself or a lack of
inspiration.
One of the suggested ways to
over come this is to remember
why you started to write in the
first place. Another is to recon-
sider your writing style.
WOW, I have a style—
COOL!
O.K. now back to the
task at hand…..Now, what
was I doing for this
months article? Hey, mom,
you got any ideas what I
can write about this
month? I’m empty!

When someone says the word “dedication or devotion”
Animal Services thinks of Pat Schudel. Miss Pat (as she is
lovingly known to us) is known by many Desoto County
residents as most of us have at one time been a pupil of
hers, from her 34 years as a teacher. Both in Desoto County
and in Tallahassee.
Married for 40 years to her husband John ( who was also
a teacher for many years) she has 2 adult sons, Glenn and
Carl. Hobbies include reading and collecting milk glass &
glass chickens.
Pat has been volunteering at Animal Services on a contin-
ual basis since October 2005 and has amassed 552 & 1/2
hours of volunteer time. She devotes 2 days a week to us.
No job is too big or too small, and she will roll up her
sleeves and dive into anything we have from filing to mak-
ing labels to stuffing envelopes to walking, bathing & grooming dogs.( as a matter of fact, she is giving a bath & a
hair cut right now) She even adopted her dog “Banjo” from Animal Services in December 2008. She also has a cal-
ico cat named Tikka.
Pat is a great ear to bounce ideas off of as she has a unique perspective and a very logical mind, and some of her
advise has served us well over the years. Open minded and frank, if she thinks it’s a bad idea, she’ll tell you so.
Off site events have also been a part of her volunteering as she has helped at a couple of our adopt-a-thons over the
years lending to the making of a successful event. We look forward to many more hours of Ms. Pat’s help, pleasant
company, support and listening ear, a true ANIMAL PEOPLE.
