The rooftop park, which features playgrounds, community gardens and a handicap accessible path from downtown Albany to Sheridan Hollow, will track through time the processes in the facilitys heart: as fertilizer is produced (a by-product of the biodigestion process) it will be used as soil on the roof. The
roofscape will then change as more soil is added and the plant species evolve through biological succession. Inside, a direct route cuts through the heart of the building, providing glimpses of and access to the metabolic activity within.
Harnessing gravity on the sites steep natural slope, Re:Source Albany filters waste through a series of manual and mechanical processes. Over 150 semi-skilled workers will facilitate the sorting and digestion process.

The waste management process is three-fold:
1) Process trash at the heart of the city, reducing transportation en-ergy use and creating urban jobs

At the scale of the narrow pe-destrian walkways, the SCE|SDC exists as small portals through and between the existing built fabric; the new buildings then rise above
the existing roofs, revealing the neighborhood in its entirety, be-fore leading students and faculty to expansive viewfinders on the ever-growing and changing city.
This intervention reflects Parsons programmatic requirements and pedagogical intents while responding to existing cultural, social, economic, and
physical conditions; it responds simultaneously to a fine-grained historic neighborhood and an exploding modern megacity

A few steps past the entry gate to the neighborhood, a wide court-yard opens to left. This unusually wide space forms a sort of exterior lobby, into it a rusted steel frame projects from an historic building;
this pedestrian-scale storefront reads in the same language and materiality as the cantilevered form as viewed from the street, and one knows he has found the entrance to SCE.

Co-opting an existing pocket park as a de-facto exterior lobby, the SDC building is entered through a compressed lobby inside an existing building; a tall

The three buildings of the Shanghai Design Center are accessed from three different alleys. The main building (in the foreground above), is accessed from near the main bus route to the north, and projects over this main street.
The large north-facing aperture gives even daylight and a direct visual connection to Shanghai at the scale of the city to the studio space, and simultaneously presents the activity of Parsons to the activity below.

Net-Zero design-build competition hosted by DOE on national mallThe Parsons-Stevens proposal used passivhaus principles, in-depth solar analysis, energy modeling, and community feedback to generate form and organize
program. The competition module is now part of a duplex in a nearby underserved neighborhood of Washington DC
This competition board presents the Parsons-Stevens approach to the Solar Decathlon: to build a passivhaus duplex for a nearby low-income neighborhood of Wash-ington DC. We constructed one unit for display on the national mall; it was subsequently moved and added to by Habitat For Humanit, and will be inhabited by a deserving family by the end of the year. To accomplish this our design incorporated neighborhood feedback, site-specific solar analysis, energy modeling, and modular construction systems for multiple assembly/ disassembly.
The Parsons/ Stevens Solar Decathlon project spanned two years, over 10 disciplines, and more than 100 students. It evolved from individual and small group charrettes to large groups working very closely together. The images on this page show a few stages in this process, from an initial sketch I made (right), to the final 1/2=1 model (below).

Studio Walakuba was a team of four Parsons architecture students. In the summer of 2010 we traveled to Jinja, Uganda, to create housing designs for Slum Womens
Initiative for Development (SWID), a grassroots NGO which was formed to empower local women to purchase their land through savings cooperatives.

GENERAL NOTES
Pre-painted iron ridge to match on pre-painted ironroofing sheets on 100 x 150mm timber purlins on 100 x75mm wall-plate. Ridge should extend oneither side to prevent leaking.
Cement plaster ceiling on expanded metal lath on 75 x50mm softwood branderings at 600mm c/c on roof joists.
All exterior walls, load-bearing and interior walls are 1wythe thick (140mm) of230 x 140 x 10mm burnt clay bricks with 1.5mm mortarjoints. All walls are plastered and/or painted. All walls toinclude hoop irons every 2 courses of brick. Damp proofcourse under all walls.
25mm f.f. cement-sand screed on 100mm oversiteconcrete mix 1:3:6 on 150mm thick hardcore oncompacted gravel.
230mm thich burnt clay brick plinth wall, depth to bedetermined on site, min. 500mm on 690 x 230mmconcrete footer, mix 1:3:6 on termite treated compactedlevelled murram.

b h a t i a r e s i d e n c e
On a steep, wooded site with ski run access, this house recalled his-toric mining vernacular, particularly the bridges common in the rugged terrain.
I was central to all phases of de-velopment, from site schematics to construction documents and consultant and contractor coordi-nation.

Under construction, the affordable housing neighborhood was designed to use locally-produced compressed-earth bricks and unskilled labor. I designed 6 house typologies of varying complexity,
costing between $2,000 and $26,000. These off-grid structures hybridize local knowledge and appropriate sustainable technologies.
To provide temporary sheltered outdoor workspaces, this project was an exciting collaboration with local bamboo craftsmen. Harnessing local knowledge and indigenous building techniques, and capitalizing
on skills and craftsmanship particular to bamboo construction, we were able to create very stable space-frame truss systems to carry fairly expansive roofs on limited columns.

I purchased this log house in 2006; design goals included energy efficiency improvements and extensive material re-use.
Reconstructed interior and exterior framing, fenestration, lighting, heating, plumbing, electrical systems, and finishes.
