School councils work successfully when:

• All the pupils in the school have regular opportunities

for discussion

• There are reliable structures for feedback and

communication

• All members of the school community value them

• Senior management is committed to the council and

pupils are consulted on major decisions that directly

affect their daily lives in school

• Pupils are trained to run discussions and lead

meetings efficiently

• The council is an important part of the School

Development Plan and is regularly evaluated and

reviewed

• Pupils put forward most of the issues for council

meeting agendas

• Regular meetings are held in school time with a

recognised venue
