DESCRIPTION

Here is the much awaited digital version of Volume 1, Issue 1 of Sangu Magazine. In the upcoming months leading to 26th July 2015, marking the 50th anniversary of the independence of Maldives, we will be sharing the rest of Sangu Magazine. Sangu was a bimonthly political magazine that was first published in January 1990. The 6th issue of the magazine was in print when the government banned it, confiscated all copies, and arrested its editors and writers including Mohamed Nasheed (Anni). The official reason given by the government for banning Sangu was " rayyithunge hiythakugai sarukaaraai medhu fithuna uffedhun". Given the outspoken opinions shared in the magazine, often critical of the government, and the fact that its circulation increased from 500 in February 1990 to 3,000 in April, the government began to increasingly restrain fundamental freedoms and human rights in the country.
