Biographical Note
Elizabeth Ann Seton was born Elizabeth Ann Bailey in New York City on August 28, 1774 into the Episcopalian family of Catherine Charlton Bailey and Dr. Richard Bayley, an influential surgeon and medical educator at the time. Elizabeth married William Magee Seton, a merchant, in 1794, with whom she had five children: Anna Marie, born 1795; William Vincent, born 1796; Richard in 1798; Catherine Josephine (Kit), born 1800; and Rebecca (Bec), born 1802. Elizabeth was prominent amongst New York society and a number of charitable social service organzations in the city and was a charter member of the Society for the Relief of Poor Widows with Small Children in 1797. In 1801, her husband's shipping business, Seton, Maitland, and Company, with which she had been involved, went bankrupt, and William began to show signs of debilitating tuberculosis.
Elizabeth, William, and Anna Maria relocated to Leghorn, Italy, where William died of the disease on December 27, 1803. Elizabeth and Anna Maria stayed with the families of the Filicchi brothers, Antonio and Filippo. Antonio Filicchi exposed gave Elizabeth her first experience with Roman Catholicism.
After returning to New York in 1804, Elizabeth explored the Catholic church and made her profession of faith in 1805. In 1808, Reverend Louis William Dubourg, S.S. and Bishop John Carroll, S.J. invited Elizabeth to Baltimore with the condition that she start a school. In 1809, she formed the Sister of Charity of St. Joseph's and professed her vows before Bishop Carroll. She relocated the Sisters of Charity to Emmitsburg, Maryland in mid-June of 1809, where they opened the Saint Joseph's Free School and Saint Joseph's Academy, which she also directed. The community adopted vows based upon the French Daughters of Charity. This marked the first time the Vincentian rule came to the United States, and she created the first English translation of 'The Life of Madomoiselle Le Gras'.
Elizabeth Ann Seton died at age 46 on January 4, 1821 of tuberculosis in Emmitsburg. The Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph's formed six communities in North America: The Sisters of Chairty of Saint Vincent de Paul of New York, The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, The Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul of Halifax, The Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, New Jersey; and The Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, Greensburg, Pennsylvania. The Emmitsburg community joined with the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul of Paris, France in 1850.
Elizabeth was declared venerable by Pope John XXIII in 1959 and blessed in 1963. In 1975, Pope Paul VI declared St. Elizabeth Ann Seton the first native-born American to be a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.
