Assessment Information
Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered B1ab(i,ii,iii)+2ab(i,ii,iii) ver 3.1
Year Published: 2013
Date Assessed: December 1, 2010
Justification:
Rotala malabarica was described in 1990 and has not been relocated in the type locality itself. It
occupies a very restricted area, on lateritic rocks, of less than 10 km2 and is threatened by lateritic
mining and extensive use of herbicides in the adjoining cashew plantations. Since the species has not
been recorded since its description, it is probably extinct. Further surveys in adjoining areas may reveal
its occurrence. It is assessed as Critically Endangered.
Geographic Range
Range Description:
Rotala malabarica is a short-lived annual plant and is endemic to southern India confined to one
location in Kannur District in Kerala (Cook 1996).
Country Occurrence:
Native: India (Kerala)

PopulationNothing is known about the population of this species. However, since there is laterite mining in the
habitat of the species, it is inferred that the population is declining.
Current Population Trend: Decreasing
Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information)
It is short-lived annual and found in seasonally pools in depressions on lateritic rocks containing rich
deposits of humus. The plant grows together with R. malampuzhensis in temporary pools in depressions
on lateritic rocks containing rich deposits of humus.
Systems: Terrestrial, Freshwater
Use and TradeNo use has been reported for this species.
Threats (see Appendix for additional information)
The species and the habitat it was discovered in are threatened by lateritic mining. The species is also
threatened from the use of herbicides in the adjoining cashew plantations.
Conservation Actions (see Appendix for additional information)
Detailed surveys and studies on ecology, threats, habitat, population and trends are urgently required.
