O que é o Universo?

Como observar o Universo? Como observamos estrelas, galáxias, etc? Luz!
L. Tatit e I. Assunção

“After a careful study of the plates I am prepared to say that there can be no doubt that they confirm Einstein’s prediction. A very definite result has been obtained that light is deflected in accordance with Einstein’s law of gravitation.” 06/11/1919
Relatividade Geral prevê um novo tipo de onda: Ondas Gravitacionais – oscilações do próprio espaço

The first pulsar (pulsating radio star) was discovered in 1967 at the radioastronomy laboratory in Cambridge, England (Nobel Prize 1974 to Antony Hewish). Pulsar = neutron stars! Mass somewhat greater than that of the sun and a radius of about ten kilometres. (A human being on the surface of a pulsar would weigh some hundred thousand million times more than on Earth – Sun radius is 695.700 km)
Joe Weber (1919-2000) In the 1950s Weber calculated that he could detect them using large cylinders of ultrapure aluminum, about 2 meters in length and 1 meter in diameter. The stretching of space, he reasoned, would make the bars hum, vibrate, and ring with sound like jumbo tuning forks. Claimed to have detected them in 1970 – was not reproduced. In 1987 NSF starts funding LIGO.
GW150914 was produced by the merger of two black holes with masses of about 36 times and 29 times the mass of the Sun respectively, and that the post-merger black hole had a mass of about 62 times the Sun's mass.
If we compare the masses of the pre- and post-merger black holes, we see that the coalescence converted about three times the mass of the Sun (or nearly six million trillion trillion kilograms) into gravitational-wave energy, most of it emitted in a fraction of a second. By contrast the Sun converts a mere two billionths of one trillionth of its mass into electromagnetic radiation every second. In fact, the gravitational-wave power radiated by GW150914 was more than ten times greater than the combined luminosity (i.e. the light power) of every star and galaxy in the observable Universe.
Gravitational wave signatures detected by each observatory This graphic shows the data from each of the three observatories. The top graph shows the Signal to Noise Ratio - or roughly how significant the detection was. The middle graph shows the "chirp" or frequency shift across time. The bottom graph shows the wave form.
The most likely masses for the two black
holes are about 30 and 25 solar masses respectively.

LISA Pathfinder is paving the way for future missions by testing in flight the very concept of gravitational wave detection: it will put two test masses in a near-perfect gravitational free-fall and control and measure their motion with unprecedented accuracy. After sixteen months of science operations, LISA Pathfinder will complete its mission on 30 June 2017, having successfully demonstrated the technology to build ESA's future space observatory of gravitational waves.
Lançada em 3 de dezembro de 2015
As LISA Pathfinder approaches the end of its successful technology demonstration mission, ESA's Science Programme Committee has selected today the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) as the third large mission (L3) in ESA's Cosmic Vision plan. LISA is a space-based observatory of gravitational waves consisting of a constellation of three spacecraft, with launch planned for 2034. In the LISA mission concept, six test masses will fly, two on each spacecraft. Each pair of test masses will be located at the end of the arm of the constellation, and will be linked to the others over millions of kilometres via lasers.
