Why Chemical Engineering then?

Enjoyed science (especially chemistry) and math in high school

Was willing to try a challenging major

Why Chemical Engineering Now?

It’s provided me a really good career with lots of challenges.

I have the confidence to solve almost any problem, even if I don’t know the answer.

I’ve travelled all over the world, worked with great people, and made some great friends.

What did I wish I knew then that I know now…

Think about where you want to live

Be willing to be wrong and fail

Be open to new challenges and opportunities

Be willing to accept criticism and challenge

•Read “Mindset” and “Creativity, Inc.”

Experience as much as you can beyond the classroom in college

• Internships

•Co-ops

•Research

•Electives

•Extra-curricular

Grad school was hard, but not the way I anticipated

Be aware of “imposter” syndrome

Novozymes in numbers

Salem’s History Late 1940’s: George A. Jeffreys founded G. A. Jeffreys & Co. in Salem to manufacture microorganisms for various uses

1962: Jeffreys becomes Biochemical Corporation of America, which was later purchased by Sybron Chemicals

mid 1960’s: Mr. Jeffreys starts a new microbe business in downtown Salem

1960’s through 1999: both businesses profitably grow in size and branch out in product line

Oct. 2000: Sybron Chemicals is sold to Bayer AG. By Dec, Bayer decides to divest the Biochemicals business

Jul. 2001: Novozymes A/S purchases the former Sybron Biochemicals, renamed Novozymes Biologicals, Inc. [NZB]

June, 2002: NZB purchases George A. Jeffreys, Inc.

July, 2002: NZB purchases InterBio of Houston, TX, brings production to Roanoke Valley

Present Day – 127 Zymers across 7 sites in Salem providing production and R&D across

multiple industries

Household Care Household Care

A game changer for clean

The front line of biotech innovation moves

into the home when we wash our clothes

and do the dishes.

In markets around the world, our

enzymes enable new brands and claims

that make the difference when consumers

choose which cleaning product to buy

and which brand to rely on.

Agriculture

Producing more with less

All over the world, farmers are facing the

dilemma of how to enhance the

productivity and sustainability of their

land.

Today the farmers toolkit for solving the

challenge is expanding as Novozymes

and The BioAg Alliance introduce more

biological solutions that improve

production and enhance yield.

Bioenergy Bioenergy

Enabling sustainable fuel

Over the last 20 years, Novozymes has

been dedicated to developing the biofuel

industry.

At the forefront of innovation, our

integrated solutions boost the plants of

our customers and partners in both

starch-based and cellulosic ethanol

production. By doing so, we can help

bioenergy manufacturers stay agile and

efficient.

Animal Health & Nutrition

Animal Health & Nutrition

Better production, healthier animals

We collaborate with partners to deliver

feed solutions that create healthier

animals and more efficient production.

Our biological solutions provide

producers with an alternative to antibiotic

growth promoters and limit the use of

feed additives.

Food & Beverages Food & Beverages

Improving what we eat and drink

Enzymes have been used for more than

6,000 years in the production of bread,

beer and cheese.

Novozymes’ enzymes play a significant

role in transforming the quality and

sustainability of products and processes,

enabling producers to diversify their pro-

duct ranges, develop superior, better-

tasting products and achieve sustainable

growth.
