Introducing the White Frog Approach to Learning
The principles behind White Frog training material emerged as a result of working with some of the largest design and construction firms in the world. Alongside the definition of standards and protocols, we needed a strategic plan for the roll-out of knowledge to large groups of people in different locations, with very different requirements. We also
understood that the best strategy in the world is worthless if the training received at the coal-face is sub-par or irrelevant to the individual. It is never the case that one size fits all
when it comes to professional training on something as broad as BIM – how can we suggest that the same agenda suits a concept Architect exploring shape and form as well as an Architectural Technician specialising in regulations and construction details? At the same
time, if these two were pulled together from different offices to form a project team, you want the overlapping principles to be consistent and complimentary.
The delivery of this training needed to be very scalable and extremely flexible but with an underlying consistency of approach and best
practice – we don’t want to teach software skills and preach best practice; we want to introduce best practice through the use of software (and vice-versa).
So, whilst some basic principles need to be established for all users, we acknowledge that the learning needs of every user are unique to the individual and to the current
circumstances, so not all modules are relevant to all people and more modules are available than the collection you see here. Over protracted
time and several projects, a user may want to cover a wide range of topics or may become specialised in a limited aspect of several pieces of software, but
for today, perhaps we just need them to be a useful member of the team – small bites of knowledge delivered when needed will always be the preferable approach. Logistics make this hard to achieve but the White Frog approach is designed to get as close as possible.
On the surface then, this is a book to accompany a course on Autodesk Revit
software, but in reality, it is a book to accompany the adoption of BIM methodology,
using Revit software to do so.
This book is a collection of modules, each one designed to align with a common industry task or scenario. The techniques and principles discussed within these modules are constantly adapted and updated to keep pace with the latest developments in the software and the workplace, with advice often devised and revised in the process of working on ground-breaking projects.
The modular program allows for the required flexibility in education whilst maintaining consistency of message across the topics, whether delivered in the form of a single masterclass, CPD-style module or as a comprehensive two-day course. How it works… This book is not the whole picture. This collection of lecture notes and exercise scripts is intended to be part of the learning experience. For each book like this one for delegates, there is a book to teach the teacher on how to deliver the course. Those teacher resources extend to include drawings, lecture scripts, datasets, videos, and slideshows. The theory covered in this book is designed to reinforce the lecture delivered in the classroom, whilst the exercise scripts provide step-by-step instruction for practical application of the principles, mirroring the content of the videos. The idea behind providing all this material is that the quality of training delivery can be consistent and measurable.
The is also a version of this material which has been formatted for self-paced delivery 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, via the on-line academy. This applies the same consistent principles and messaging to a whole new level in terms of logistical options and delivery preference. Module 01 Placing Structural Elements
This module introduces delegates to the basics of structural elements is aimed at those users who are of a non-structural discipline and who have a requirement to show structural elements within their models or to replicate structural designs provided in 2D formats such that they can be used to provide context to other information. It does not cover any analytical topics nor does it go into detail regarding settings or advanced modification of the frame. Topics discussed include:
The placement of: • Columns, Beams and Bracing members• Foundations, Strip footings, Slabs, Slab Edges, Piers and Pilasters• Beam and Truss Systems
Basic modification to the above members The creation of framing elevations Placement and modification of beam systems
This exercise starts with the relatively empty project model and takes you through the process of assembling various structural components in order to define a simple frame as shown on the accompanying drawing.
Module 02 Preparing the Analytical Model
In this module, we look at some basic modelling techniques and best practice - around standard elements and common issues, and we'll look at some simple checks that can be undertaken when placing model elements to ensure the elements analytical component are connecting as you expect them to. Topics explored here include:
Analytical v Physical model
View, adjust and manage analytical alignmentNodes and hosted nodesAuto-detection and projectionConsistency and member support checks
Module 03
This exercise works through a number of practical examples of the different options available to adjust and align elements in the analytical model. The two main methods used to align analytical members are auto-detection and projection and we'll look at how these are applied in different circumstances. The first exercise considers curved members and the unique issues to consider whenworking with them.
Creating Parametric Trusses
In this module, we look at the parametric truss builder in Revit. It is an extremely adaptable and powerful tool, and its potential is becoming increasingly explored and used to develop quite diverse and often complex alternate "framing" systems. Topics explored here include:
Loading and inserting structural trusses Modifying profiles and properties Add basic supports The family editor Build a parametric truss

Fabrication Elements – to sketch connections Modifiers – fine tune the sketch Parametric cuts – automatically mitre and notch elements Structural connection settings – hard coded Custom connections – user defined
Module 07
The exercise uses the various connection tools located on the steel ribbon to interactively create a column base plate with an anchor rod connection to a foundation pad, then create a custom (userdefined) connection and finally, apply, modify, and save a system connection for future use.
RC Detailing
This module follows on from the Placing Reinforcement module, it explores the workflows and tools used to create RC detailing documentation. Documents include detail drawings of individual elements, assembly drawings, general arrangement drawings and schedules including partitions. The following topics are covered:
Reinforcement Partitioning Detail Drawings Creating an Assembly Views Create an Assemble Drawing General Arrangement Drawings Placing Schedules
Module 08
The exercise uses practical examples to assign a reinforcement partition number to the stair rebar,then create a detail drawing of the stair and main bar. It then creates an assembly drawing usingautomated views for one of structural columns and finally, it places tags and views to complete aGeneral Arrangement drawing of a floor with a reinforcement partition schedule.
Robot Interoperability
This module explores the workflows available to the structural design team using Revit and RobotStructural Analysis. It takes a frame having loads applied in Revit, into Robot where design codes are used to assign load combinations before running the analysis. The results are then analysed, anddesign changes made as required, it concludes with the design changes being round-tripped back toRevit using the update model functionality. The following topics are covered:
Exporting the model from RevitDirect Integration to Robot Automatic Load CombinationsFinite Element Mesh and DisplacementsReinforcement Calculations Adjust Member Sizes in Robot Update these changes to the Revit model
The exercise provides a practical example of the workflow for exporting a Revit frame complete with loads applied, to Robot Structural Analysis, running an analysis of the frame, performing member design before pushing the updated model back to Revit.
