HARVARD DEBATE COUNCIL Congressional Debate Workshop
June 26-July 8 or July 10-July 22, 2016 www.hdcworkshops.org
“The instructors allow you to develop in your own way and based on your own strengths, rather than making you a robot debater.”
- Participant
Our Curriculum What makes our program unique? We assess students’ background knowledge and demonstrated skill, to encourage them to reach their potential. Instructors provide constant feedback, and students reflectively journal throughout the workshop so they become self-aware of where improvement is needed most. Students’ growth, struggles, and accomplishments are discussed in a culminating exit interview with each student.
We help students achieve practical literacy for understanding issues, so they can research effectively and apply those investigative and analytical skills well beyond the end of the workshop. Advanced students are pushed harder, and participate in a book club, so they learn how to apply more advanced reading to analysis during a debate.
Realizing that many of our students are leaders within their squads, or have a student leadership role, we also discuss best practices of maintaining effective and collegial squads.
Reflective learning and personal goal setting is what makes our curriculum unique. We augment this with extensive use of technology, including video capture of all practice speeches, as well as individualized attention and personal development. We convey knowledge, build skills, and foster a disposition that emphasizes leadership over mere competitiveness.
Learning Outcomes Mastering simulative, legislative, and procedural nature of Congressional Debate § Researching, understanding, and prioritizing issues that face our
nation § Synthesizing knowledge through drafting compelling legislation § Exploration of theoretical frameworks upon which arguments are
based § Using technology and research tools to optimize preparation
efficiency § Constructing and delivering dynamic, engaging speeches § Meaningful clash, questioning, and weighing § Demonstrating competitive ethics and squad leadership
Adam Jacobi, Curriculum Director Considered a preeminent authority on Congressional Debate, Adam Jacobi has directed several Congressional Debate tournaments, including Emory, Harvard, and the Tournament of Champions. He recently taught debate in Changzhou, China, and prior, coordinated a variety of programming and educational initiatives for the National Forensic League. He also coached students at Rufus King HS to championships at the NFL, Harvard, and NCFL tournaments, along with the only six-place sweep ever of the Wisconsin State Congress. Adjunct faculty member of communication at Ripon College and graduate of leadership seminars, Mr. Jacobi brings a keen sense of pedagogy to his teaching. Mr. Jacobi wrote the text, Student Congress Debate (2007), authored the National Forensic League's Congressional Debate Guide (2010), and was a contributing author and co-editor for Introduction to Debate: A Public Forum Debate Handbook (2013). Prior to teaching, Mr. Jacobi worked as a legislative assistant for a Milwaukee Common Council member, and as an account executive for a public relations firm. He graduated from Carroll University with a B.S. in Communication-Public Campaigns, and has completed graduate work in education and communication, including professional development from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education.

Constructing and delivering dynamic, engaging arguments and refutations 4. Mastering parliamentary procedure and skill in presiding 5. Demonstrating competitive ethics and squad leadership
"I would recommend this workshop, because it has made me exponentially better and I felt it didn't try to make us clones of each other but rather let us run with our own preferences when speaking and I liked having that freedom and flexibility."
"I honestly learned more about Congress and related topics in 10 days than I have in months at my school. It is a very entertaining and informative camp and I would definitely come back."
"The best part was actually seeing your growth through journal writing."
"It was well worth the money for the opportunity to meet some of the best at congressional debate."
"I loved learning more about not only Congressional Debate but also the world, speaking/writing, interacting with my classmates, and the perfect balance of work and free time."
"I loved the intensiveness of it. I was thrilled to find that this wouldn't be a walk in the park, and that it was intellectually stimulating."
“I will be a captain next year, and the specific sessions to help me lead my team will be so valuable. I also love the ethical philosophy the instructors urge!”
“I got to work with students from Washington, Florida, Colorado, North Carolina, and others... Mr. Jacobi really fosters a collaborative atmosphere while preparing us for competition.”
In Their Own Words… Student Testimonials
Our alumni have won and placed at national invitational tournaments, won NCFL Nationals, earned the esteemed NSDA/NFL Final Session Leadership Award.
More important, our philosophy of emphasizing leadership training has prepared our students to lead their squads, and become successful in college beyond high school speech and debate.
Fostering Success: In Competition and Beyond Alumni Accomplishments
Our Philosophy We empower students to become critical thinkers, collaborative decision-makers, and ethical leaders while cultivating a unique style to set them apart from other debaters.
