RedWingNordicSkiClub/TeamThisisthe7hyearoftheRedWingNordicClubhasbeeninexistence.TheteambeganwhenasmallgroupofRedWingHighSchoolCrossCountryrunners(PhilMitchell,MeyerBeckner,HannahRosenow&EmilyDeck)askediftheycouldreceivecoachingontechniquesofcrosscountryskiing.Theclubhasexpandedinparticipationeachyearandin2015,RedWingNordicbecameapartofRedWingCommunityEducationandRecreation.ThisyearwehavereachedanothermilestoneinourhistorywherewehavejoinedtheWisconsinNordicSkiLeague(WNSL).WehavepursuedparticipationintheMinnesotaStateHighSchoolLeague(MSHSL)forthepastseveralyears,buttherehasbeenacontinualdeclineinthefundingfortheActivitiesDepartmenttowheretheycannottakeonanothersport.AswearenotapartoftheMSHSL,wearelimitedtoourracingopportunitiesandarenoteligibleforparticipationinconference,regional,orstatemeetsorotherracesputonbyMinnesotateams.LastspringwepetitionedtojointheWNSLandforthe2017-18skiseasonweareparticipatinginaguestclassdivisionforConferenceandState.WewillhaveseparatescoringwithotherguestclassschoolsandindividualswiththewholeteamparticipatingattheConferencemeetandtentotalskiers(splitbetweentheboysandgirlsteam)willattendthestatemeetswiththreescoringfortheteam.IfindividualsortheteamwouldplaceandreceivemedalsiftheywerefromaWisconsinSchool,theywillalsobeawardedduplicatetrophies.Thegoaloftheclubistoencourageanactiveparticipationandenjoymentofcrosscountryskiingwithinthemiddleschoolandhighschoolagegroupswhilebuildingtheskillstobelife-longskiers.Thefocusisonlearningthehowtoski,camaraderie,teamworkandhavingfun.Inaddition,teammembershavetheopportunitytonotonlydeveloptheirskillsasacrosscountryskier,buildphysicalfitness,butalsocompeteincompetitiveraceevents.Student/athleteshavetheopportunitytobeateammembereitherasarecreationalskieroracompetitiveskier.Arecreationalskierisprimarilyinterestedinlearninggoodskitechnique,havingfun,andincreasingfitness.Acompetitiveskierhasthesesamegoalsbutisalsointerestedinchallengingherself/himselfincompetitiveevents.Askiercanbeginasarecreationalskierandifinterestedandinconsultationwithcoaches,movetothecompetitivearea.Forthoseinterestedincompetition,thereareusually4to5highschoolmeetsavailabletoraceandtheywillincludebothclassicandskatedisciplines.Athleteswillalsohaveanopportunitytoparticipatein2or3citizenraces.Toparticipateinracingaskiermusthaveatleast80%attendanceatpracticessincethelastmeet.Nordicskiingisanexhilaratingsportthatprovidesindividualswithlifeskillsthatenablethemtoparticipateinandenjoywinter.Nordicskiersareconsideredtobeoneofthefittestofallathletes!!Forstudents/athletesNordicskiingprovidesanexcellentmeansofbuildingenduranceandfitnessandgivesthemajumpstartonspringandsummersports.

RegistrationFee/CostsTheregistrationfeeoftheclubperfamilyis$150.00,$100ifit’syourfirstyear.Noonewillbeturnedawaybecauseoftheinability/difficultytopay.ScholarshipmoniesareavailablethroughRedWingCommunityEducationandRecreation.Feeshaveincreasedduetoextraracefeesandothercostsassociatedwithmulti-dayracing.Teammembersareexpectedtohaveappropriateequipment(skis,poles,boots,bindings,andwax)andclothing.Sinceweareaclub,traveltoWolverineSkiCampandtocompetitiveeventsismadepossiblebythevolunteereffortsofcoachesandparents.Parentsinthepasthavebeenmorethanwillingtohelpanditisverymuchappreciated.Coaches/Assistants

PracticeLocations–DrylandTrainingEarlyintheseason,priortoskiingonsnow,drylandtrainingsessionswillbescheduled.Thesesessionswillconsistofsuchthingsasrunning,bounding,strengtheningexercisesandrollerskiing/inlineskatingwithskipoles.FordrylandtrainingskiersaretomeetatTwinBluffMiddleSchoolunlessotherwiseindicated.Aswithlastyear,wehavemultiplepairsofrollerskis,bothNNNandSNS.Wewillbeabletousethemduringpracticesbutwedonothaveenoughforeveryone.PracticesonTuesdaysthroughFridaywillhaverollerskiingcomponentsbutwillhappenonarotatingbasis.Ifparticipantshavetheirownrollerskis,theywillbeabletorollerskieachofthosedays.Thursdayswillbereservedforotherdrylandtrainingasawholeteam.Besuretogetrollerskitipsforyourpolesduringdryland!!

PracticeLocations-SnowOverthelastseveralyearswehavehadtobeveryflexibleonwherewetrained,dependingonsnowconditions.TheprimarylocationoftrainingisMississippiGolfLinks,butmayalsoskiNagel’sHomeTrails,thefieldnearCoventChurch(the“ShowcaseTrails”)andtheCannonValleyTrail.Earlyinthesession,ifthereisnosnowinRedWingbutinWinona(manmadesnow),aSaturdaymorningpracticeortwomaybeheldinWinona.Thetrails(Sorin’sBluff&Memorial)acrosstheroadfromMississippiGolfhavebeenwidenandleveledforSkiSkating.Thesetrailsmayalsobeutilized.Wehaveaccesstoafewvansthroughcommunityeducationandwilltrytoutilizethesewhentravelingoutofthecityforpracticesbutmayneedparentvolunteerstodriveorskierstodrivethemselves.

WolverineSkiCampTheRedWingNordicClubwillconductaskicampatboththeWolverineTrailsandtheABRTrailSystem(private)inIronwood,Michigan.TheskicampwilltakeplaceonDec.8-10th.ToparticipateintheskicampanathletemustbeamemberofRedWingNordicandhavedemonstratedsignificantinvolvementinpracticesleadinguptotheskicamp(atleast80%participation).Thereisamaximumof45peopleincludingchaperones.TheteamwillleaveRedWingearlyonFriday,Dec.8thandarriveinIronwoodatapproximately1:00pm.AccommodationsareatWolverineVillagewww.wolverinevillage.comwhichisacrosstheroadfromtheWolverinetrailsystem.OnFriday

afternoonandSundaymorningwewillskitheWolverineTrailSystem(traildonationsaccepted).OnSaturdaywewillskiattheABRTrailSystem(lastyearcostperdaywas$9.00).Costforcampshouldberelativelyminimal.AthleteswillberesponsiblefordinneroutofSaturdayevening.Also,asmallamountofmoneywillbeneededtopurchasefoodforbreakfastonSaturdayandSundayMorning.Chaperonesmaybeneededbasedonthenumberofskierswhoattend.Sign-upanddetailswillbeannouncedatthesign-upmeetingonOct.24.

CaptainsAcaptainisanindividualwhodemonstratesleadershipinteamdiscipline,teamunity/camaraderieandteamspirit.Acaptainleadsbybeingabletoexhibitahealthybalanceofself,academics,familyandskiing.Acaptainisrespectfultohis/herteammatesandpositivelyencouragestheyoungerskierstolearnandgrow.Acaptainisamentortotheyoungerathlete.Lastly,acaptaincanberelieduponbytheircoachestoleadinpracticesessionsandassistwhenneededandwillbeencouragedtoleadactivitiesoutsideoftheseason.Captainswillbedecidedattheendoftheseason.Captainsforthe2017-18yearareEricSchauss,DavydTennis,CalvinHarper,andLeEttaMcDowell.

TeamMemberConductEachteammemberisexpectedtoconducthim/herselfinamannerwhichisconducivetolearning,safety,andhavingrespectforteammatesandcoaches.Bothintownandoutoftownevents,aRedWingNordicskierrepresentsRedWingHighSchoolandthecommunityofRedWinginarespectfulmanner.WhileRedWingNordicisnotahighschoolsponsored,theclubfollowstherulesoftheStateHighSchoolLeagueregardingcoachandathleteconductatalltimesincludingtheuseofalcoholanddrugs.

HighSchoolAthleticLetterinNordicSkiingSkiershavetheopportunitytoearnahighschoolletterfromRedWingHighSchool.Tofulfilltherequirementsoftheprogramthestudent/athletemustdemonstrateproficiencyinskateandclassicskiing,participateinatleastthreeraces,attendadesignatednumberofpracticesandmeetanumberofcommunityserviceshours.Althoughnotcountedforpoints,skiersareexpectedtovolunteeratleastonceduringtheseasonwiththeScreamingEaglesprogram.

RedWingNordicSkiClubLetteringRequirementsMinimumExpectations:Approximately130pointsCommunityService–Requirements–10hours(10points)Awrittenform(attached)describingtheservicemustbeturnedinpriortothelastscheduledpractice.AnycommunityservicebetweenMarch15andthelastdayofpracticeofthefollowingseasonmaybeapplied.DemonstrationofProperSkiingTechniques–Requirement–4techniques(16points)HighSchoolMeets–Requirement–3Events(60points)Askiermustcompetein3scheduledhighschoolskimeetsincludingtheConferencemeetinBothClassicandSkate.Eacheventisworth20points.Amake-uprace(ifscheduled),ascheduledHighSchoolrace,oracitizensskiracemaybeusedinplaceofoneoftherequiredhighschoolskimeets.Ifacitizen’sskiraceisusedinplaceofoneoftherequiredmeets,itistheskier’sresponsibilitytoprovidetheRedWingHeadCoachwithinformationontherace(name,location,date,results).Oneracemustbetheconferencemeetattheendoftheseason.Practice-Requirement–attendaminimumof85%ofthetotalnumberofheldpractices(approximately25sessions,eachpracticeisworth2points–50points)Amaximumof8bonuspointscanbeappliedtoletteringrequirementsBonusPointSources1)4pointswillbegrantedforeachskiworkshoporskicampattended.Theseworkshopsareinadditiontoregularpracticeandmustbeconductedbyqualifiedcoached/skiers.2)awaxclinicwillcounttoward2points

ThemesfromCoachMickfortheSeasonStronger-Smarter-FasterUnlockingthefullpotentialofaskieristheunderstandingthatasyourbodycontinuestogrowandmature,yourabilitiescontinuetogrowaswell.Asayouthskier,youtrulyarestronger,smarter,andfasterthanyourealizeandwhenyoucanremindyourselfofthiswhenyouarefeelingdown,andstrugglingphysicallyandmentally,youwillbeablepushthroughandoutperformyourexpectations.Inpracticesandraces,therearedaysthatyoushouldfeelfullytaxedbecauseitisinthesemomentsthatyoucontinuetoimprove.Sayingthesethreewordsandengaginginpositiveself-talkworksforme,hasworkedforothercoachesandskiersthatIhaveworkedwithanditcanworkforyoutoo.BeingagreatathleteSTEMSfromfivethings.Recognizingthecomponentsofapracticeandwhatyoucandooutsideofpracticewillhelpyoucontinuetogetbetter.Byleavingoutanyofthefollowing,youjeopardizetheresultsyouarecapableof.S-Strength:Aweightroutinethatfocusesonthemusclesrelatedtoyoursportandahealthyandbalancedbodymeanthatyouhavemorepowerwithwhichtomove.Strongermusclescanleadtofewerpoleandstepratesandmovingfaster.Weightroutinesshouldpredominantlyfocusonlowweightsandhighreps(15-20)tobuildupmuscletobeusedforendurance.Somelowweighthighrep(2-5)shouldalsobeincorporatedasthisistheexplosionofstrengthneededinthosequicksprintmotions.Balance,stretching,andhavingproteinhelpstokeepmuscleshealthyandshouldbeincorporatedinastrengthplan.T-Technique:Therearethreetypesofskiers,oneswhopowerthroughwithbruteforce,thosewithgoodtechnique,andthosewhohaveboth.Inskiing,thereistheV1,V2,andV2alternatetechniquesinskatingandthedoublepole,kickdoublepole,anddiagonalstrideinclassic.Ineachformoftechnique,therearedifferentbodypositions,handandpoleplacements,cadences,andothervariablesinunderstandingwhenandhowtoexecuteeachtechnique.Eachdayinskiingyoushouldhaveafocusonyourtechnique.Buildingthecorrectmusclememoryallowsamorenaturalskiasyoubecomemoreexperiencedandasyoufatigueonthecourse.Notfocusingallowsforpoortechniquetomanifestwhichcanrequire

moretimetofix.Ondaysyouarenotabletoski,watchingvideosofexperiencedathletescanhelpyouimproveyourowntechnique.E-Endurance:Ourregularracingseasonincludesracesupto10kwithoptionalcitizenracesupto50k.Ourpracticeswillincludeoverdistancedayswherewewillworkupto1.5hoursofnon-stopeasyskiing.Thisisthebody'sabilitytokeepgoingandgoing.Youcanbuildendurancethroughskiing,swimming,biking,running,andotherareas.Crosstrainingallowsforthebodytorecoverskispecificmuscleswhilestillincreasingendurance.M-MentalFortitude:Thiscomponenthasthegreatestinfluenceonthesuccessofanindividualinsideofskiingandout.Practiceswillbehard,raceswillbehard,schoolcanbehard,relationshipscanbehard,workcanbehard,lifecanbehard.Thosewhocantakeonachallengewithapositivementalattitudeandawilltoovercomewillfindsuccess.Rarelydothingscomeeasy.Ifyoucantacklepracticeswithhillrepeats,over-distanceskis,singledigitandwindyconditions,poorsnow,longraces,andotheraspectsthatmakethisoneofthetoughestsportsthereare,allwiththementalfortitudetoovercometheconditionsandshootforsuccess,youcanbecomeanunstoppableathlete.Thosewhogiveinandagiveupwillnotearnthesamelevelsuccess.Anotherportionofthisisinvisualization.Visualizationisaneffectivetoolinpreparationforraces.Mentallyreviewingyourtechniquecanimproveitandinsomestudiesitisjusteffectiveasactuallyphysicallyperformingit.Mentallypreparingforpossiblesituationsthatmightariseduringaraceanddifferentracingstrategieswillallowyoutoexecutethemmorecomfortablyandwithlessmentaleffortduringtherace.Thinkingaboutthechangesintopographyinaraceandhowyouplanonadaptingyourtechniquewillallowforsmoothertransitionsaswell.Evenifyouarenotphysicallywellenough,youcanstillengageinvisualizationstrategiestoimproveyourperformance.Speed:Racesarewonbythefirsttocrossthefinishline.Wewillincorporateintervalworkoutswiththegoalofbuildingupyouroverallspeed.Togetfaster,youwillcontinuallyhavetopushyourselfoutofyourcomfortzonewhereitgetsmoredifficulttobreathe,yourbodybeginstohurt,andcreatechangesinyourVO2max.Thereissometruthinthenopainnogainmantra.Itcanbeeasytofindacadencethatiscomfortableforyoutostayinandthereissomeeffortrequiredtomakesureyouarepushingyourselftogofaster.Puttingallofthesecomponentstogetherallowsforanefficientathleteinanysportingevent.Doingitwithafriendorateammakesiteasiertostayaccountableandcommitted.EvenIfalloffthebandwagonfromtimetotimewhenIamtrainingbymyself.

Red Wing Nordic Skiing Wolverine Camp Trip

December 8 – December 10 Ironwood Michigan

The Wolverine Camp is a training camp for all levels of skate skier, novice or competitive. We will be skiing at the ABR trails and Wolverine Ski trails, developing technique and team building. The total cost is $125 with a deposit of $80 due when registering and the remaining $45 due by November 23. Fees cover transportation, lodging, ski trail passes and two meals. Other meals are on your own. Accommodations are limited to 30 so register early. Students must be registered with the Red Wing Nordic Team to sign up for the camp. We will be leaving Red Wing on Friday, Dec 8 in the morning and returning late in the day on Sunday, Dec 10.
